Occupancy distributions in Markov chains via Doeblin's ergodicity coefficient
We apply Doeblin's ergodicity coefficient as a computational tool to
approximate the occupancy distribution of a set of states in a homogeneous but
possibly non-stationary finite Markov chain. Our approximation is based on new
properties satisfied by this coefficient, which allow us to approximate a chain
of duration n by independent and short-lived realizations of an auxiliary
homogeneous Markov chain of duration of order ln(n). Our approximation may be
particularly useful when exact calculations via first-step methods or transfer
matrices are impractical, and asymptotic approximations may not be yet
reliable. Our findings may find applications to pattern problems in Markovian
and non-Markovian sequences that are treatable via embedding techniques.Comment: 12 pages, 2 table

Isolation, characterisation and experimental evolution of phage that infect the horse chestnut tree pathogen, Pseudomonas syringae pv. aesculi
Bleeding canker of horse chestnut trees is a bacterial disease, caused by the bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. aesculi, estimated to be present in ~ 50% of UK horse chestnut trees. Currently, the disease has no cure and tree removal can be a common method of reducing inoculum and preventing spread. One potential method of control could be achieved using naturally occurring bacteriophages infective to the causative bacterium. Bacteriophages were isolated from symptomatic and asymptomatic horse chestnut trees in three locations in the South East of England. The phages were found to be belonging to both the Myoviridae and Podoviridae families by RAPD PCR and transmission electron microscopy. Experimental coevolution was carried out to understand the dynamics of bacterial resistance and phage infection and to determine whether new infective phage genotypes would emerge. The phages exhibited different coevolution patterns with their bacterial hosts across time. This approach could be used to generate novel phages for use in biocontrol cocktails in an effort to reduce the potential emergence of bacterial resistance
Use of Alternative Wood for the Ageing of Brandy de Jerez
The use of alternative types of wood has arisen for the aging of the Brandy de Jerez, on a pilot plant level. In particular, besides the use of American oak, two more types of oak have been studied, French oak and Spanish oak, allowed by the Technical File for the ID Brandy de Jerez, and chestnut, which, though it is not officially allowed, is a type of wood which had been traditionally used in the area for the aging of wines and distillates. All of them have been studied with different toasting levels: Intense toasting and medium toasting. The study of the total phenolic composition (TPI), chromatic characteristics, organic acids, and sensory analysis have proven that chestnut leads to distillates with a higher amount of phenolic compounds and coloring intensity than oak. This behavior is the opposite as regards the toasting of the wood. Among the different types of oak, Spanish oak produces aged distillates with a higher phenolic composition and a higher color intensity. Regarding tasting, the best-assessed samples were those aged with chestnut, French oak, and American oak, and the assessors preferred those who had used a medium toasting level to those with an intense leve

Just Chestnut ini menyajikan chestnut atau kacang kastanya yang masih segar atau fresh sehingga memiliki rasa yang sangat enak, selain itu chestnut ini lebih sehat jika dibandingkan dengan jenis kacang-kacangan lainnya. Chestnut ini memiliki banyak manfaat dan kandungan gizi seperti vitamin C, asam folat, lemak tak jenuh tunggal, mineral dan vitamin B-Kompleks. Manfaat chestnut yaitu dapat mencegah penyakit jantung, mencegah kanker, mencegah osteoporosis, dan baik untuk ginjal. Masyarakat Surabaya sedikit yang mengetahui tentang chestnut merk “Just Chestnut” di Surabaya karena tidak efektifnya media promosi yang lalu dijalankan dan juga dapat dijumpai dengan beberapa gerai yang kian sedikit. Oleh karena itulah dibutuhkan media dan promosi yang dilakukan agar dapat lebih memberikan edukasi dan minat terhadap para target audience dari chestnut merk “Just Chestnut” ini. Mapping Chestnut Stands Using Bi-Temporal VHR Data
This study analyzes the potential of very high resolution (VHR) remote sensing images and extended morphological profiles for mapping Chestnut stands on Tenerife Island (Canary Islands, Spain). Regarding their relevance for ecosystem services in the region (cultural and provisioning services) the public sector demand up-to-date information on chestnut and a simple straight-forward approach is presented in this study. We used two VHR WorldView images (March and May 2015) to cover different phenological phases. Moreover, we included spatial information in the classification process by extended morphological profiles (EMPs). Random forest is used for the classification process and we analyzed the impact of the bi-temporal information as well as of the spatial information on the classification accuracies. The detailed accuracy assessment clearly reveals the benefit of bi-temporal VHR WorldView images and spatial information, derived by EMPs, in terms of the mapping accuracy. The bi-temporal classification outperforms or at least performs equally well when compared to the classification accuracies achieved by the mono-temporal data. The inclusion of spatial information by EMPs further increases the classification accuracy by 5% and reduces the quantity and allocation disagreements on the final map. Overall the new proposed classification strategy proves useful for mapping chestnut stands in a heterogeneous and complex landscape, such as the municipality of La Orotava, Tenerife
The cultivation of Castanea sativa (Mill.) in Europe, from its origin to its diffusion on a continental scale
The history of Castanea sativa (sweet chestnut) cultivation since medieval times has been well described on the basis of the very rich documentation available. Far fewer attempts have been made to give a historical synthesis of the events that led to the cultivation of sweet chestnut in much earlier times. In this article we attempt to reconstruct this part of the European history of chestnut cultivation and its early diffusion by use of different sources of information, such as pollen studies, archaeology, history and literature. Using this multidisciplinary approach, we have tried to identify the roles of the Greek and Roman civilizations in the dissemination of chestnut cultivation on a European scale. In particular, we show that use of the chestnut for food was not the primary driving force behind the introduction of the tree into Europe by the Romans. Apart from the Insubrian Region in the north of the Italian peninsula, no other centre of chestnut cultivation existed in Europe during the Roman period. The Romans may have introduced the idea of systematically cultivating and using chestnut. In certain cases they introduced the species itself; however no evidence of systematic planting of chestnut exists. The greatest interest in the management of chestnut for fruit production most probably developed after the Roman period and can be associated with the socio-economic structures of medieval times. Genome Sequence of the Chestnut Blight Fungus Cryphonectria parasitica EP155: A Fundamental Resource for an Archetypical Invasive Plant Pathogen.
Cryphonectria parasitica is the causal agent of chestnut blight, a fungal disease that almost entirely eliminated mature American chestnut from North America over a 50-year period. Here, we formally report the genome of C. parasitica EP155 using a Sanger shotgun sequencing approach. After finishing and integration with simple-sequence repeat markers, the assembly was 43.8 Mb in 26 scaffolds (L50 = 5; N50 = 4.0Mb). Eight chromosomes are predicted: five scaffolds have two telomeres and six scaffolds have one telomere sequence. In total, 11,609 gene models were predicted, of which 85% show similarities to other proteins. This genome resource has already increased the utility of a fundamental plant pathogen experimental system through new understanding of the fungal vegetative incompatibility system, with significant implications for enhancing mycovirus-based biological control
Confocal microscopy of colloidal particles: towards reliable, optimum coordinates
Over the last decade, the light microscope has become increasingly useful as
a quantitative tool for studying colloidal systems. The ability to obtain
particle coordinates in bulk samples from micrographs is particularly
appealing. In this paper we review and extend methods for optimal image
formation of colloidal samples, which is vital for particle coordinates of the
highest accuracy, and for extracting the most reliable coordinates from these
images. We discuss in depth the accuracy of the coordinates, which is sensitive
to the details of the colloidal system and the imaging system. Moreover, this
accuracy can vary between particles, particularly in dense systems. We
introduce a previously unreported error estimate and use it to develop an
iterative method for finding particle coordinates. This individual-particle
accuracy assessment also allows comparison between particle locations obtained
from different experiments. Though aimed primarily at confocal microscopy
studies of colloidal systems, the methods outlined here should transfer readily
to many other feature extraction problems, especially where features may
