[Review of] Cora Govers and Hans Vermeulen, eds. The Politics of Ethnic Consciousness

    Get PDF
Govers and Vermeulen\u27s book seems to be a timely one, considering the resurgence of inter-ethnic strife that is causing so much misery in many parts of the world, especially since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the cold war. The book, however, is not an expose on the politics of ethnic consciousness. Rather, it is a collection of case studies that address certain aspects of ethnic consciousness. Govers and Vermeulen provide the theoretical context for these studies in the introductory first chapter of the book. Indeed, the book can be usefully divided into two main parts, with the first chapter constituting one part and the rest of the chapters constituting the other

Biopower and an ecology of genes : seeing livestock as meat via genetics

    Get PDF
This book chapter focuses on some of the implications of what has been represented as a radical change in livestock breeding for thinking about meat in relation to living farm animals: the use of genetic techniques in selecting breeding animals. The chapter draws on Foucault’s theorisation of biopower to describe some of the key dimensions of this shift, articulating this concept with an argument that breeders’ engagement with these techniques is part of a changing political ecology of livestock farming at the inter-related scales of the gene, the body, the herd or flock, the farm and the meat production system

Generalised Compositional Theories and Diagrammatic Reasoning

    Get PDF
This chapter provides an introduction to the use of diagrammatic language, or perhaps more accurately, diagrammatic calculus, in quantum information and quantum foundations. We illustrate the use of diagrammatic calculus in one particular case, namely the study of complementarity and non-locality, two fundamental concepts of quantum theory whose relationship we explore in later part of this chapter. The diagrammatic calculus that we are concerned with here is not merely an illustrative tool, but it has both (i) a conceptual physical backbone, which allows it to act as a foundation for diverse physical theories, and (ii) a genuine mathematical underpinning, permitting one to relate it to standard mathematical structures.Comment: To appear as a Springer book chapter chapter, edited by G. Energy-efficient traffic engineering

    Get PDF
The energy consumption in telecommunication networks is expected to grow considerably, especially in core networks. In this chapter, optimization of energy consumption is approached from two directions. In a first study, multilayer traffic engineering (MLTE) is used to assign energy-efficient paths and logical topology to IP traffic. The relation with traditional capacity optimization is explained, and the MLTE strategy is applied for daily traffic variations. A second study considers the core network below the IP layer, giving a detailed power consumption model. Optical bypass is evaluated as a technique to achieve considerable power savings over per-hop opticalelectronicoptical regeneration. Document type: Part of book or chapter of boo

Agency in the Alternatives: Common-Law Perspectives on Binding the Firm

    Get PDF
This chapter in a forthcoming book examines the external aspects of agency law in the context of unincorporated firms, that is, the capacity of actors associated a firm to bind it to the legal consequences of interactions with third parties. The chapter focuses in particular on the impact of acts done by a representative for which the representative lacked actual authority. The chapter differentiates the terminology and concepts associated with partnership law from the common law of agency, in particular, a partner\u27s capacity to bind the firm albeit the partner lacks actual authority, which the chapter terms the partner\u27s positional power. Turning to LLCs, the chapter argues that basic agency issues are muddled, due in part to a historically explicable overhang of partnership concepts and terminology --- since obviated by changes in tax law --- and that the muddle most significantly (and surprisingly) affects LLCs organized under the Delaware LLC statute. The chapter demonstrates that such confusion is not inevitably and that, short of formal changes in statutory text, judicial decisions and an arguable consensus among expert lawyers may mitigate the confusion

Elliptic hypergeometric functions associated with root systems

We give a survey of elliptic hypergeometric functions associated with root systems, comprised of three main parts. The first two form in essence an annotated table of the main evaluation and transformation formulas for elliptic hypergeometric integeral and series on root systems. The third and final part gives an introduction to Rains' elliptic Macdonald-Koornwinder theory (in part also developed by Coskun and Gustafson).Comment: 28 pages. Modulo minor edits this paper will appear as a chapter in the book "Multivariable Special Functions" (edited by Tom Koornwinder and Jasper Stokman) which is part of the Askey-Bateman project. This version: essential correction of equation (1.2.14) and some further minor correction

The Napoleonic Wars: A Very Short Introduction

    Get PDF
Part of Oxford University Press' 'Very Short Introduction' series, this book aims to unpack the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars for readers. It discusses the causes of the conflict in the first chapter, provides an outline of the course of the war in chapters two and three, while the remaining four chapters discuss the ways in which the wars were fought on both land and sea; the experience 'at the sharp end' as lived by soldiers, sailors and civilians; and the ways in which societies were mobilized in the prosecution of the war. The book concludes with some thoughts on the legacy of the conflict. There is an annotated reading list at the end
