Thirty Years of Machine Learning: The Road to Pareto-Optimal Wireless Networks
Future wireless networks have a substantial potential in terms of supporting
a broad range of complex compelling applications both in military and civilian
fields, where the users are able to enjoy high-rate, low-latency, low-cost and
reliable information services. Achieving this ambitious goal requires new radio
techniques for adaptive learning and intelligent decision making because of the
complex heterogeneous nature of the network structures and wireless services.
Machine learning (ML) algorithms have great success in supporting big data
analytics, efficient parameter estimation and interactive decision making.
Hence, in this article, we review the thirty-year history of ML by elaborating
on supervised learning, unsupervised learning, reinforcement learning and deep
learning. Furthermore, we investigate their employment in the compelling
applications of wireless networks, including heterogeneous networks (HetNets),
cognitive radios (CR), Internet of things (IoT), machine to machine networks
(M2M), and so on. This article aims for assisting the readers in clarifying the
motivation and methodology of the various ML algorithms, so as to invoke them
for hitherto unexplored services as well as scenarios of future wireless
networks.Comment: 46 pages, 22 fig
Towards Massive Machine Type Communications in Ultra-Dense Cellular IoT Networks: Current Issues and Machine Learning-Assisted Solutions
The ever-increasing number of resource-constrained Machine-Type Communication
(MTC) devices is leading to the critical challenge of fulfilling diverse
communication requirements in dynamic and ultra-dense wireless environments.
Among different application scenarios that the upcoming 5G and beyond cellular
networks are expected to support, such as eMBB, mMTC and URLLC, mMTC brings the
unique technical challenge of supporting a huge number of MTC devices, which is
the main focus of this paper. The related challenges include QoS provisioning,
handling highly dynamic and sporadic MTC traffic, huge signalling overhead and
Radio Access Network (RAN) congestion. In this regard, this paper aims to
identify and analyze the involved technical issues, to review recent advances,
to highlight potential solutions and to propose new research directions. First,
starting with an overview of mMTC features and QoS provisioning issues, we
present the key enablers for mMTC in cellular networks. Along with the
highlights on the inefficiency of the legacy Random Access (RA) procedure in
the mMTC scenario, we then present the key features and channel access
mechanisms in the emerging cellular IoT standards, namely, LTE-M and NB-IoT.
Subsequently, we present a framework for the performance analysis of
transmission scheduling with the QoS support along with the issues involved in
short data packet transmission. Next, we provide a detailed overview of the
existing and emerging solutions towards addressing RAN congestion problem, and
then identify potential advantages, challenges and use cases for the
applications of emerging Machine Learning (ML) techniques in ultra-dense
cellular networks. Out of several ML techniques, we focus on the application of
low-complexity Q-learning approach in the mMTC scenarios. Finally, we discuss
some open research challenges and promising future research directions.Comment: 37 pages, 8 figures, 7 tables, submitted for a possible future

Delay and energy efficiency optimizations in smart grid neighbourhood area networks
Smart grids play a significant role in addressing climate change and growing energy demand.
The role of smart grids includes reducing greenhouse gas emission reduction by providing alternative energy resources to the traditional grid. Smart grids exploit renewable energy resources into the power grid and provide effective two-way communications between smart grid domains for efficient grid control. The smart grid communication plays a pivotal role in coordinating energy generation, energy transmission, and energy distribution. Cellular technology with long term evolution (LTE)-based standards has been a preference for smart grid communication networks. However, integrating the cellular technology and the smart grid communication network puts forth a significant challenge for the LTE because LTE was initially invented for human centric broadband purpose. Delay and energy efficiency are two critical parameters in smart grid communication networks. Some data in smart grids are real-time delay-sensitive data which is crucial in ensuring stability of the grid. On the other hand, when abnormal events occur, most communication devices in smart grids are powered by local energy sources with limited power supply, therefore energy-efficient communications are required. This thesis studies energy-efficient and delay-optimization schemes in smart grid communication networks to make the grid more efficient and reliable. A joint power control and mode selection in device-to-device communications underlying cellular networks is proposed for energy management in the Future Renewable Electric Energy Delivery and Managements system. Moreover, a joint resource allocation and power control in heterogeneous cellular networks is proposed for phasor measurement units to achieve efficient grid control. Simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed schemes
A Survey of Scheduling in 5G URLLC and Outlook for Emerging 6G Systems
Future wireless communication is expected to be a paradigm shift from three basic service requirements of 5th Generation (5G) including enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), Ultra Reliable and Low Latency communication (URLLC) and the massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC). Integration of the three heterogeneous services into a single system is a challenging task. The integration includes several design issues including scheduling network resources with various services. Specially, scheduling the URLLC packets with eMBB and mMTC packets need more attention as it is a promising service of 5G and beyond systems. It needs to meet stringent Quality of Service (QoS) requirements and is used in time-critical applications. Thus through understanding of packet scheduling issues in existing system and potential future challenges is necessary. This paper surveys the potential works that addresses the packet scheduling algorithms for 5G and beyond systems in recent years. It provides state of the art review covering three main perspectives such as decentralised, centralised and joint scheduling techniques. The conventional decentralised algorithms are discussed first followed by the centralised algorithms with specific focus on single and multi-connected network perspective. Joint scheduling algorithms are also discussed in details. In order to provide an in-depth understanding of the key scheduling approaches, the performances of some prominent scheduling algorithms are evaluated and analysed. This paper also provides an insight into the potential challenges and future research directions from the scheduling perspective
A review on green caching strategies for next generation communication networks
© 2020 IEEE. In recent years, the ever-increasing demand for networking resources and energy, fueled by the unprecedented upsurge in Internet traffic, has been a cause for concern for many service providers. Content caching, which serves user requests locally, is deemed to be an enabling technology in addressing the challenges offered by the phenomenal growth in Internet traffic. Conventionally, content caching is considered as a viable solution to alleviate the backhaul pressure. However, recently, many studies have reported energy cost reductions contributed by content caching in cache-equipped networks. The hypothesis is that caching shortens content delivery distance and eventually achieves significant reduction in transmission energy consumption. This has motivated us to conduct this study and in this article, a comprehensive survey of the state-of-the-art green caching techniques is provided. This review paper extensively discusses contributions of the existing studies on green caching. In addition, the study explores different cache-equipped network types, solution methods, and application scenarios. We categorically present that the optimal selection of the caching nodes, smart resource management, popular content selection, and renewable energy integration can substantially improve energy efficiency of the cache-equipped systems. In addition, based on the comprehensive analysis, we also highlight some potential research ideas relevant to green content caching
