This article chronicles the life of Carleton E. Watkins, who was active during the dawn of photography in the nineteenth century. He photographed Yosemite Valley, the sequoias, and other scenery of California. Includes prints of Watkins, which are taken from the Syracuse University Watkins album
The observable effects of tidally induced warps in protostellar discs
We consider the response of a protostellar disc to a tidally induced warp and
the resultant changes in the spectral energy distribution (SED). We argue that
for typical protostellar disc parameters the warp is communicated through the
disc in a wave-like fashion. We find that the main effects of the warp tend to
be at large radii (greater than 30 AU) and, for sufficiently small viscosity,
can be quite long-lived. This can result in non-uniform illumination of the
disc at these radii and can induce significant changes to the SED at
wavelengths greater than 100 microns.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures. Accepted by MNRA
Aid and development : issues and reflections
The paper has three main sections. The first is a review of two particular propositions which appear in Dambisa Moyo’s 2009 book Dead Aid which were not subjected to rigorous analysis in the reviews which appeared following its publication. The finding is that neither proposition survives serious scrutiny – that aid is responsible for most of sub-Saharan Africa’s economic woes and that the international bond market represents a viable alternative to foreign aid for the finance of development-oriented investment. The second questions some of the characteristics and uses of the World Bank’s Country Policy and Institutional Assessment (CPIA), particularly focussing on the use of an essentially ordinal measure in cardinal applications. The third subjects the UK Department for International Development’s Needs-Effectiveness Index to critical review, concluding that further consideration of its attributes is necessary
Climatic role of Southern Hemisphere extratropical cyclones and their relationship with sea ice
Transient atmospheric systems play a central role in determining the climate of the high southern latitudes. Accordingly, the variability of these features and the mechanisms which cause it are important considerations for the (palaeo)climatologist. One element which might have been expected to be intimately tied up with cyclonic activity is the extent of sea ice encircling the Antarctic continent.
We refer to studies which suggest relationships between sea ice and cyclones on synoptic time-scales, but in which these become very weak when interannual relationships are considered. We have analysed the reasons for this apparently contradictory behaviour. It is suggested that the intuitive appeal of an ice-cyclone connection has an implicit and characteristic time-scale (of a few hours or days) associated with it.
However, the same reasoning cannot be applied to longer periods, because of the nonlinearities in the links between the two factors. This, in particular, cautions against the use of simplistic arguments when trying to estimate the locations of storm tracks during epochs when seaicc coverage was very different from that obtaining during the insttumental record

INCREASING FOOD RECOVERY FROM FARMERS' MARKETS: A PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS
Collecting unsold food discarded at farmer's markets has the potential to allow nonprofit food recovery and gleaning organizations to distribute significant quantities of wholesome, unsold fruits and vegetables to needy families. Donations of this unsold produce by the participants at these markets can generate tangible benefits: increased private food assistance and better nutrition for lower income families. The Geographical Information System (GIS) analysis presented in this study indicates that there is potential to strengthen the links between farmer's markets and nonprofit food recovery and gleaning organizations in many areas of the United States.Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety, Marketing,
