    Can a workspace help to overcome the query formulation problem in image retrieval?

    We have proposed a novel image retrieval system that incorporates a workspace where users can organise their search results. A task-oriented and user-centred experiment has been devised involving design professionals and several types of realistic search tasks. We study the workspaceā€™s effect on two aspects: task conceptualisation and query formulation. A traditional relevance feedback system serves as baseline. The results of this study show that the workspace is more useful with respect to both of the above aspects. The proposed approach leads to a more effective and enjoyable search experience

    Slicing and dicing the information space using local contexts

    In recent years there has been growing interest in faceted grouping of documents for Interactive Information Retrieval (IIR). It is suggested that faceted grouping can offer a flexible way of browsing a collection compared to clustering. However, the success of faceted grouping seems to rely on sufficient knowledge of collection structure. In this paper we propose an approach based on the local contexts of query terms, which is inspired by the interaction of faceted search and browsing. The use of local contexts is appealing since it requires less knowledge of the collection than existing approaches. A task-based user study was carried out to investigate the effectiveness of our interface in varied complexity. The results suggest that the local contexts can be exploited as the source of search result browsing in IIR, and that our interface appears to facilitate different aspects of search process over the task complexity. The implication of the evaluation methodology using high complexity tasks is also discussed

    Image Retrieval within Augmented Reality

    Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht das Potenzial von Augmented Reality zur Verbesserung von Image Retrieval Prozessen. Herausforderungen in Design und Gebrauchstauglichkeit wurden fĆ¼r beide Forschungsbereiche dargelegt und genutzt, um Designziele fĆ¼r Konzepte zu entwerfen. Eine Taxonomie fĆ¼r Image Retrieval in Augmented Reality wurde basierend auf der Forschungsarbeit entworfen und eingesetzt, um verwandte Arbeiten und generelle Ideen fĆ¼r Interaktionsmƶglichkeiten zu strukturieren. Basierend auf der Taxonomie wurden Anwendungsszenarien als weitere Anforderungen fĆ¼r Konzepte formuliert. Mit Hilfe der generellen Ideen und Anforderungen wurden zwei umfassende Konzepte fĆ¼r Image Retrieval in Augmented Reality ausgearbeitet. Eins der Konzepte wurde auf einer Microsoft HoloLens umgesetzt und in einer Nutzerstudie evaluiert. Design and usability challenges were identiļ¬ed for both ļ¬elds of research in order to formulate design goals for the development of concepts. A taxonomy for image retrieval within augmented reality was elaborated based on research work and used to structure related work and basic ideas for interaction. Based on the taxonomy, application scenarios were formulated as further requirements for concepts. Using the basic interaction ideas and the requirements, two comprehensive concepts for image retrieval within augmented reality were elaborated. One of the concepts was implemented using a Microsoft HoloLens and evaluated in a user study.
