    Improvement of the guiding performances of near infrared organic/inorganic channel waveguides

    New sol-gel derived organic/inorganic hybrid single mode waveguides devices have been developed for telecommunication applications in the two near infrared windows at 1310 and 1550 nm. The overall procedure of fabrication of these devices is described and the refractive indices of the guiding, the buffer and the protective layers are adjusted by a precise control of the materials' composition. Due to the improvement of the composition of the guiding layer, the attenuation losses are significantly decreased to 0.8 dB/cm and 2dB/cm at respectively 1310 and 1550 nm

    A pilot study of temsirolimus and body composition.

    PurposeBody weight and composition play a role in cancer etiology, prognosis, and treatment response. Therefore, we analyzed the weight, body composition changes, and outcome in patients treated with temsirolimus, an mTor inhibitor that has weight loss as one of its side effects.Patients and methodsSixteen patients with advanced solid tumors treated with temsirolimus were studied; body composition was evaluated utilizing computerized tomography images. Sarcopenia was defined as skeletal muscle index lower than 38.5 cm(2)/m(2) for women and 52.4 cm(2)/m(2) for men.ResultsFive of 16 patients (31 %) were men; median age, 60 years. Forty-four percent (7/16) of patients were sarcopenic. Fatigue, anemia, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia were common. Baseline sarcopenia and body composition did not correlate with worse toxicity or treatment outcome. However, there was a trend for greater loss of adipose area (p = 0.07), fat mass (p = 0.09), and adipose index (p = 0.07) for patients with grade 3 or 4 toxicities versus those with grade 1 and 2 side effects.ConclusionPatients with higher grade toxicities tended to lose more body fat, suggesting a possible end-organ metabolic effect of temsirolimus. These observations merit exploration in a larger cohort of patients

    Instability of Amorphous Ru-Si-O Thin Films under Thermal Oxidation

    Ternary films about 200 nm thick of composition Ru20Si15O65 have been synthesized by reactive rf magnetron sputtering of a Ru1Si1 target in an argon-oxygen gas. As-deposited, the films are X-ray-amorphous. Their atomic density is 8.9 × 10^22/cm^3 (5.1 g/cm^3), and their electrical resistivity is in the range of 2 mOmega cm. After annealing in dry oxygen at 600°C for 30 min, micron-sized grains of RuO2 grow out of the film and volatile RuO4 escapes. The significance of these results is discussed

    Aspects of the biology of the lagoon crab Callinectes amnicola (Derocheburne) in Badagry, Lagos and Lekki lagoons, Nigeria

    A preliminary report of the size, composition, growth pattern and food habits of the blue crab, Callinectes amnicola, (De Rocheburne) in the Badagry, Lagos and Lekki Lagoons (Nigeria) is presented. The collection of crabs from the three lagoons covered the period from May 1999 to October 2000. The carapace length for Badagry Lagoon ranged from 2.2 cm to 16.4 cm with weight of 4.4 g to 252.6 g. The crabs showed a unimodal size distribution. For the Lagos Lagoon, crabs sizes ranged from 3.5 cm to 16.8 cm and weighed 3.28 to 277.1 g. The sizes of crabs in the Lekki Lagoon ranged from 3.5 cm to 16.1 cm and weighed 3.5 g to 262.7 g. Crabs from the three lagoons exhibited negative allometric growth. The food items were similar in the three lagoons and comprised mainly mollusc shells, fish parts, shrimps and crab appendages and occasionally higher plant material

    We present here the results of the room temperature dielectric constant measurements and Rietveld analysis of the powder x-ray diffraction data on (1x)[Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3]xPbTiO3(1-x)[Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3]-xPbTiO_3(PMN-xxPT) in the composition range 0.20x0.450.20 \leq x \leq 0.45 to show that the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) region contains two monoclinic phases with space groups Cm (or MBM_B type) and Pm (or MCM_C type) stable in the composition ranges 0.27x0.300.27 \leq x \leq 0.30 and 0.31x0.340.31 \leq x \leq 0.34, respectively. The structure of PMN-xxPT in the composition ranges 0x0 \leq x \leq 0.26, and 0.35x10.35 \leq x \leq1 is found to be rhombohedral (R3m) and tetragonal (P4mm), respectively.     Cloud condensation nuclei activity, closure, and droplet growth kinetics of Houston aerosol during the Gulf of Mexico Atmospheric Composition and Climate Study (GoMACCS)

    In situ cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) measurements were obtained in the boundary layer over Houston, Texas, during the 2006 Gulf of Mexico Atmospheric Composition and Climate Study (GoMACCS) campaign onboard the CIRPAS Twin Otter. Polluted air masses in and out of cloudy regions were sampled for a total of 22 flights, with CCN measurements obtained for 17 of these flights. In this paper, we focus on CCN closure during two flights, within and downwind of the Houston regional plume and over the Houston Ship Channel. During both flights, air was sampled with particle concentrations exceeding 25,000 cm^(−3) and CCN concentrations exceeding 10,000 cm^(−3). CCN closure is evaluated by comparing measured concentrations with those predicted on the basis of measured aerosol size distributions and aerosol mass spectrometer particle composition. Different assumptions concerning the internally mixed chemical composition result in average CCN overprediction ranging from 3% to 36% (based on a linear fit). It is hypothesized that the externally mixed fraction of the aerosol contributes much of the CCN closure scatter, while the internally mixed fraction largely controls the overprediction bias. On the basis of the droplet sizes of activated CCN, organics do not seem to impact, on average, the CCN activation kinetics
