Space physics for graduate students: an activities-based approach
The geospace environment is controlled largely by events on the Sun, such as solar flares and coronal mass ejections, which generate significant geomagnetic and upper atmospheric disturbances. The study of this Sun-Earth system, which has become known as space weather, has both intrinsic scientific interest and practical applications. Adverse conditions in space can damage satellites and disrupt communications, navigation, and electric power grids, as well as endanger astronauts. The Center for Integrated Space Weather Modeling (CISM), a Science and Technology Center (STC) funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation (see http://www.bu.edu/cism/), is developing a suite of integrated physics-based computer models that describe the space environment from the Sun to the Earth for use in both research and operations [Hughes and Hudson, 2004, p. 1241]. To further this mission, advanced education and training programs sponsored by CISM encourage students to view space weather as a system that encompasses the Sun, the solar wind, the magnetosphere, and the ionosphere/thermosphere. This holds especially true for participants in the CISM space weather summer school [Simpson, 2004]
The sexual and theological ethics of gay marriage in France: a dialectic between autonomy and universalism
The debate on gay marriage has gathered pace globally and particularly in France. Here, the secularization of marriage as an ‘acte laïque’ has furthered progress towards a political and juridic recognition of gay marriage. The Catholic church (Vatican) has opposed this development in its re-enforcement of Catholic sexual ethics and the distinction it draws between secular and religious definitions of marriage. Complicating this distinction is the per-ception of a trend towards post-secularism in France where religion is making a return to democratic debates on citizenship and gender, and raising concerns over the status of the civility of the marriage act. The focus of this article is to look at gay marriage from the perspective of con-temporary ethical and theological thinking. Specifically, I aim to examine alternative discourses that open up new ways of configuring gay marriage through an examination of concepts of integrity, responsibility and asceti-cism, and critically the ethical relationship between autonomy and norms
Galaxies with unusually high abundances of molecular hydrogen
A sample of 66 galaxies from the catalog of Bettoni et al. (CISM) with
anomalously high molecular-to-atomic hydrogen mass ratios (M_{mol}/M_{HI}>2) is
considered. The sample galaxies do not differ systematically from other
galaxies in the catalog with the same morphological types, in terms of their
photometric parameters, rotational velocities, dust contents, or the total mass
of gas in comparison with galaxies of similar linear sizes and disk angular
momentum. This suggests that the overabundance of is due to transition of
HI to H_2. Galaxies with bars and active nuclei are found more frequently among
galaxies which have M_{mol} estimates in CISM. In a small fraction of galaxies,
high M_{mol}/M_{HI} ratios are caused by the overestimation of M_{mol} due to a
low conversion factor for the translation of CO-line intensities into the
number of H_2 molecules along the line of sight. It is argued that the
"molecularization" of the bulk of the gas mass could be due 1) to the
concentration of gas in the inner regions of the galactic disks, resulting to a
high gas pressure and 2) to relatively low star-formation rate per unit mass of
molecular gas which indeed takes place in galaxies with high M_{mol}/M_{HI}

Implementation of a Critical Incident Stress Management Program for Nurse Anesthetists.
BACKGROUND: Healthcare is a stressful profession where in addition to routine stressors, there are critical incident (CI) events which are occurrences capable of overwhelming an individual’s normal coping mechanisms. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to improve the process by which certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) exposed to critical incident events are provided post-critical incident support thus mitigating the potential for CI stress
METHODS: We created a CI stress management pilot program for nurse anesthetists employed by an academic hospital located in the Southeastern United States. The program was based upon concepts introduced by Medically Induced Trauma Support Services and the Scott Three-Tiered Interventional Model of Second Victim Support. The program goal was to offer 100% of CRNAs exposed to a CI event supportive measures prior to assuming care for a patient other than the patient involved in the CI event. The program was piloted for five months as data was collected regarding the number and type of critical incident occurrences as well as the percentage of individuals offered said support post-critical incident. The National Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s Plan-Do-Study-Act methodology was utilized throughout the pilot period to evaluate for any changes needed to the program as issues arose.
RESULTS: Over the five month period, three CI events occurred. Two of the three individuals involved in the events received support as prescribed. Failure of the third individual to receive timely support was due to facility and staff limitations. Nevertheless, the initial receptivity to the program was positive. Future improvement of the program’s processes are intended to yield support offered to 100% of individuals involved in a critical incident in a more timely manner
Time-variability in the Interstellar Boundary Conditions of the Heliosphere: Effect of the Solar Journey on the Galactic Cosmic Ray Flux at Earth
During the solar journey through galactic space, variations in the physical
properties of the surrounding interstellar medium (ISM) modify the heliosphere
and modulate the flux of galactic cosmic rays (GCR) at the surface of the
Earth, with consequences for the terrestrial record of cosmogenic
radionuclides. One phenomenon that needs studying is the effect on cosmogenic
isotope production of changing anomalous cosmic ray fluxes at Earth due to
variable interstellar ionizations. The possible range of interstellar ram
pressures and ionization levels in the low density solar environment generate
dramatically different possible heliosphere configurations, with a wide range
of particle fluxes of interstellar neutrals, their secondary products, and GCRs
arriving at Earth. Simple models of the distribution and densities of ISM in
the downwind direction give cloud transition timescales that can be directly
compared with cosmogenic radionuclide geologic records. Both the interstellar
data and cosmogenic radionuclide data are consistent with cloud transitions
during the Holocene, with large and assumption-dependent uncertainties. The
geomagnetic timeline derived from cosmic ray fluxes at Earth may require
adjustment to account for the disappearance of anomalous cosmic rays when the

Praising wishful thinking is a serious risk that the author is willing to run not only in this article commenting of Natalie Stoljar’s work but also elsewhere in his scholarship. The author will analyze her claims and will agree mostly with them, he will also criticize her for stopping one step short adopting the desirability or weaker claim, when in it is not merely possible but necessary to go one step beyond arguing for the necessity or stronger claim. The author intends to present further grounds for endorsing “conceptual (legal) analysis pluralism” by distinguishing the three different inquiry or projects that are and must be integrated and stating the normative priority of one of them, i.e. the prescriptive, interpretive, and moral
