    Amine, Amido, and Imido Complexes of Tantalum Supported by a Pyridine-Linked Bis(phenolate) Pincer Ligand: Ta−N π-Bonding Influences Pincer Ligand Geometry

    A series of tantalum imido and amido complexes supported by a pyridine-linked bis(phenolate) ligand has been synthesized. Characterization of these complexes via X-ray crystallography reveals both C_s and C_2 binding modes of the bis(phenolate)pyridine ligand, with complexes containing two or fewer strong π-donor interactions from ancillary ligands giving C_s symmetry, whereas three strong π-donor interactions (e.g., three amido ligands or one amido ligand and one imido ligand) give C_2-symmetric binding of the bis(phenolate)pyridine ligand. DFT calculations and molecular orbital analyses of the complexes have revealed that the preference for C_s-symmetric ligand binding is a result of tantalum−phenolate π-bonding, whereas in cases where tantalum−phenolate π-bonding is overridden by stronger Ta−N π-bonding, C_2-symmetric ligand binding is preferred, likely because conformationally this is the lowest-energy arrangement. This electronically driven change in geometry indicates that, unlike analogous metallocene systems, the bis(phenolate)pyridine pincer ligand is not a strong enough π-donor to exert dominant control over the electronic and geometric properties of the complex

    Vote-Share Contracts and Learning-by-Doing

    We examine the interaction between vote-share contracts and learning-by-doing. Candidates for a political office are allowed to offer vote-share thresholds. The elected politician has to achieve at least this threshold value in his reelection result to remain in office for a second term. We assume there are learningby- doing effects for incumbents and show that competition leads to vote-share contracts implementing the socially optimal threshold, which is above one-half. Vote-share contracts improve the average ability level of a reelected politician and increase effort in the first term of an incumbent. On the other hand, vote-share contracts reduce the probability that learning-by-doing takes place.     The camphanic acid amide 4 has efficiently been oxidized with triphenylcarbenium tetrafluoroborate (3) to yield the chiral N-acyliminium ion 1. Trapping reactions of 1 with the silyl nucleophiles 7a-c and 10a-f proceeded with stereoselective bond formation, affording the diastereomers (R)-8/(S)-9a-c and (R)-11/(S)-12a-f, respectively, with diastereoselectivities of up to 93.9/6.1. The amido ketones (R)-8/(S)-9a-c were employed in the synthesis of the secondary amines (R)-16a-c, (S)-16a and for the preparation of (-)-homolaudanosine (R)-18. By X-ray crystallography the conformation of 1 in the crystal lattice was established and the preferred conformation of 1 in solution was elucidated by NOE experiments. Finally, the addition reaction of 7a to the iminium ion 21 derived from menthyl carbamate 20 was investigated, which reaction, however, proceeded only with insignificant asymmetric induction

    Relative Reactivity of the Metal-Amido versus Metal-Imido Bond in Linked Cp-Amido and Half-Sandwich Complexes of Vanadium

    Treatment of (η5-C5H4C2H4NR)V(N-t-Bu)Me (R = Me, i-Pr) and CpV(N-p-Tol)(N-i-Pr2)Me (Cp = η5-C5H5) with B(C6F5)3 or [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] results in formation of the corresponding cations, [(η5-C5H4C2H4NR)V(N-t-Bu)]+ and [CpV(N-p-Tol)(N-i-Pr2)]+. The latter could also be generated as its N,N-dimethylaniline adduct by treatment of the methyl complex with [PhNMe2H][BAr4] (Ar = Ph, C6F5). Instead, the analogous reaction with the linked Cp-amido precursor results in protonation of the imido-nitrogen atom. Sequential cyclometalation of the amide substituents gave cationic imine complexes [(η5-C5H4C2H4NCR'2)V(NH-t-Bu)]+ (R' = H, Me) and methane. Reaction of cationic [(η5-C5H4C2H4NR)V(N-t-Bu)]+ with olefins affords the corresponding olefin adducts, whereas treatment with 1 or 2 equiv of 2-butyne results in insertion of the alkyne into the vanadium-nitrogen single bond, affording the mono- and bis-insertion products [(η5-C5H4C2H4N(i-Pr)C2Me2)V(N-t-Bu)]+ and [(η5-C5H4C2H4N(i-Pr)C4Me4)V(N-t-Bu)]+. The same reaction with the half-sandwich compound [CpV(N-p-Tol)(N-i-Pr2)]+ results in a paramagnetic compound that, upon alcoholysis, affords sec-butylidene-p-tolylamine, suggesting an initial [2+2] cycloaddition reaction. The difference in reactivity between the V-N bond versus the V=N bond was further studied using computational methods. Results were compared to the isoelectronic titanium system CpTi(NH)(NH2). These studies indicate that the kinetic product in each system is derived from a [2+2] cycloaddition reaction. For titanium, this was found as the thermodynamic product as well, whereas the insertion reaction was found to be thermodynamically more favorable in the case of vanadium.

Northern eco-industries (the industry supplying abatement activities) are more efficient than Southern ones. Segmented environmental markets and a Northern monopoly yield identical second-best taxes in both countries. When markets are global, Southern countries underestimate the market power of eco-industries. Introducing competition creates positive (resp. negative) rent-shifting distortions in South (resp.     Structural variation, dynamics, and catalytic application of palladium(II) complexes of di-N-heterocyclic carbene-amine ligands

    A series of palladium(II) complexes incorporating di-NHC-amine ligands has been prepared and their structural, dynamic and catalytic behaviour investigated. The complexes [trans-(k(2)-(CN)-C-tBu(Bn)CN(Bn)C-tBu)PdCl2] (12) and [trans-(kappa(2)-(CN)-C-Mes(H)C-Mes)PdCl2] (13) do not exhibit interaction between the amine nitrogen and palladium atom respectively. NMR spectroscopy between - 40 and 25 degrees C shows that the di-NHC-amine ligand is flexible expressing C-s symmetry and for 13 rotation of the mesityl groups is prevented. In the related C-1 complex [(kappa(3)-(CN)-C-tBu(H)C-tBu)PdCl][CI] (14) coordination of NHC moieties and amine nitrogen atom is observed between -40 and 25 degrees C. Reaction between 12 - 14 and two equivalents of AgBF4 in acetonitrile gives the analogous complexes [trans-(kappa(2)-(CN)-C-tBu(Bn)C-tBu)PdCl2] (12) and [trans-(kappa(CN)-C-2Mes(H)C-Mes)PdCl2] (13) do not exhibit interaction between the amine nitrogen and palladium atom respectively. Complexes 12-14 and 15-17 have been shown to be active precatalysts for Heck and hydroamination reactions respectively
