Where is the Action?
Taking a set of studies about business action as the empirical starting-point, this paper looks at the various ways in which action is represented. The overall research question can be stated as follows: how is business action reconstructed in our narratives? The texts analysed are collected from research on exchange relationships in the field of marketing. To analyse how these texts depict business action, four narrative constructions are focused: space, time, actors, and plots. The categorisation and analysis are summarised and followed by a set of concluding implications and suggestions for the use of narratives aiming to reconstruct business action in the making.Marketing; narrative; plot; marketing methodology; business action; industrial marketing research
International Business Cycle Spillovers
We apply Diebold-Yilmaz spillover index methodology to monthly industrial production indices to study business cycle interdependence among G-6 industrialized countries since 1958. The business cycle spillover index fluctuates substantially over time, increasing especially after the 1973-75, 1981-82 and 2001 U.S. recessions. The band within which the spillover index fluctuates has widened since the start of the globalization process in the early 1990s. Our most important result, however, concerns the current state of the world economy: In a matter of four months from September to December 2008, the business cycle spillover index recorded the sharpest increase ever, reaching a record level as of December 2008 (See http://data.economicresearchforum.org/erf/bcspill.aspx?lang=en for updates of the spillover plot). Focusing on directional spillover measures, we show that in the current episode the shocks are mostly originating from the United States and spreading to other industrialized countries. Fact or artefact : the impact of measurement errors on the farm size - productivity relationship
This paper revisits the role of land measurement error in the inverse farm size and productivity relationship. By making use of data from a nationally representative household survey from Uganda, in which self-reported land size information is complemented by plot measurements collected using Global Position System devices, the authors reject the hypothesis that the inverse relationship may just be a statistical artifact linked to problems with land measurement error. In particular, the paper explores: (i) the determinants of the bias in land measurement, (ii) how this bias varies systematically with plot size and landholding, and (iii) the extent to which land measurement error affects the relative advantage of smallholders implied by the inverse relationship. A Shplit Ticket, Half Irish, Half Chinay : Representations of Mixed-Race and Hybridity in the Turn-of-the-Century Theater
Charles Townsend\u27s 1889 adaptation of Harriet Beecher Stowe\u27s Uncle Tom\u27s Cabin features white actors playing light- and dark-skinned African-American characters, changing degrees of make-up as the script, stage business, or number of available players demands. Thomas Denison\u27s stage directions to his 1895 play, Patsy O\u27Wang, an Irish Farce with a Chinese Mix-Up, stipulates that the alternation of the half -Chinese, half-Irish cook between his two ethnic personas is key to this capital farce, and that a comedie use of the Chinese dialect is central to this. The Geezer (c. 1896), Joseph Herbert\u27s spoof of the popular musical, The Geisha, features white actors playing Chinese dignitaries, but also donning German and Irish accents. The white actors in these plays enact different paradigms of hybridity. The actors in Townsend\u27s Uncle Tom\u27s Cabin, a Melodrama in Five Acts embody conceptions of both mixed and unmixed African Americans, freely alternating between each. In Patsy O\u27Wang, the main character\u27s background is central to the story, and the lead actor moves between the two ethnicities by his accent, mannerisms, and politics. Racial mixing is central to the plot of The Geezer through Anglo actors who make themselves hybrid by appearing Chinese and appropriating a third accent, rather than the creation of racially mixed offspring
Time and foreign exchange markets
The definition of time is still an open question when one deals with high
frequency time series. If time is simply the calendar time, prices can be
modeled as continuous random processes and values resulting from transactions
or given quotes are discrete samples of this underlying dynamics. On the
contrary, if one takes the business time point of view, price dynamics is a
discrete random process, and time is simply the ordering according which prices
are quoted in the market. In this paper we suggest that the business time
approach is perhaps a better way of modeling price dynamics than calendar time.
This conclusion comes out from testing probability densities and conditional
variances predicted by the two models against the experimental ones. The data
set we use contains the DEM/USD exchange quotes provided to us by Olsen &
Associates during a period of one year from January to December 1998. In this
period 1,620,843 quotes entries in the EFX system were recorded
Shareholding Networks in Japan
The Japanese shareholding network existing at the end of March 2002 is
studied empirically. The network is constructed from 2,303 listed companies and
53 non-listed financial institutions. We consider this network as a directed
graph by drawing edges from shareholders to stock corporations. The lengths of
the shareholder lists vary with the companies, and the most comprehensive lists
contain the top 30 shareholders. Consequently, the distribution of incoming
edges has an upper bound, while that of outgoing edges has no bound. The
distribution of outgoing degrees is well explained by the power law function
with an exponential tail. The exponent in the power law range is gamma=1.7. To
understand these features from the viewpoint of a company's growth, we consider
the correlations between the outgoing degree and the company's age, profit, and

Computer-Aided System for Wind Turbine Data Analysis
Context: The current work on wind turbine failure detection focuses on researching suitable signal processing algorithms and developing efficient diagnosis algorithms. The laboratory research would involve large and complex data, and it can be a daunting task.
Aims: To develop a Computer-Aided system for assisting experts to conduct an efficient laboratory research on wind turbine data analysis. System is expected to provide data visualization, data manipulation, massive data processing and wind turbine failure detection.
Method: 50G off-line SCADA data and 4 confident diagnosis algorithms were used in this project. Apart from the instructions from supervisor, this project also gained help from two experts from Engineering Department. Java and Microsoft SQL database were used to develop the system.
Results: Data visualization provided 6 different charting solutions and together with robust user interactions. 4 failure diagnosis solutions and data manipulations were provided in the system. In addition, dedicated database server and Matlab API with Java RMI were used to resolve the massive data processing problem.
Conclusions: Almost all of the deliverables were completed. Friendly GUI and useful functionalities make user feel more comfortable. The final product does enable experts to conduct an efficient laboratory research. The end of this project also gave some potential extensions of the system
Need for narrative
What do consumers need from a narrative? How can videographers satisfy those needs? Through semi-structured interviews with 55 Eurostar passengers from 14 countries, this film documents how people define narratives, why they need them, and how they experience the effects of need for narrative. The adjoining commentary contributes to the development of videography as an attractive method by introducing the videographer’s perspective and elucidating key story elements that can help satisfy viewers’ needs for narrative. The suggested approach maintains the vivid quality of videography and respects its methodological rigour, while increasing its effectiveness in close alignment with a consumer society that visual communication increasingly permeates. As such, the commentary and the film jointly unveil videographers’ etic and viewers’ emic use and evaluation of the videographic method
