Milestones for Teaching the Spreadsheet Program
There are different manners of teaching a spreadsheet program. In any case,
it is intended that the teacher settles the objectives of the course and adapts
them to the particular audience he/she has to deal with. This paper aims at
providing any teacher whatever his/her specific objectives and his/her audience
with elements to help him/her building a course. It focuses mainly on two
important issues: 1 - select in all that may be said about such complex tools,
what is prior to know and to teach, i.e. what leads to autonomy in using but
also to autonomy in learning (because everything cannot be taught) and 2 - show
how concepts are closely related to good formatting considerations. A method
based on the "invariants of information processing" is outlined, partially
illustrated and an implementation is described throughout a course designed for
students preparing a master in Education Sciences.Comment: 11 Page
IDR : a participatory methodology for interdisciplinary design in technology enhanced learning
One of the important themes that emerged from the CAL’07 conference was the failure of technology to bring about the expected disruptive effect to learning and teaching. We identify one of the causes as an inherent weakness in prevalent development methodologies. While the problem of designing technology for learning is irreducibly multi-dimensional, design processes often lack true interdisciplinarity. To address this problem we present IDR, a participatory methodology for interdisciplinary techno-pedagogical design, drawing on the design patterns tradition (Alexander, Silverstein & Ishikawa, 1977) and the design research paradigm (DiSessa & Cobb, 2004). We discuss the iterative development and use of our methodology by a pan-European project team of educational researchers, software developers and teachers. We reflect on our experiences of the participatory nature of pattern design and discuss how, as a distributed team, we developed a set of over 120 design patterns, created using our freely available open source web toolkit. Furthermore, we detail how our methodology is applicable to the wider community through a workshop model, which has been run and iteratively refined at five major international conferences, involving over 200 participants
Investigating an open methodology for designing domain-specific language collections
With this research and design paper, we are proposing that Open Educational Resources (OERs) and Open Access (OA) publications give increasing access to high quality online educational and research content for the development of powerful domain-specific language collections that can be further enhanced linguistically with the Flexible Language Acquisition System (FLAX, http://flax.nzdl.org). FLAX uses the Greenstone digital library system, which is a widely used open-source software that enables end users to build collections of documents and metadata directly onto the Web (Witten, Bainbridge, & Nichols, 2010). FLAX offers a powerful suite of interactive text-mining tools, using Natural Language Processing and Artificial Intelligence designs, to enable novice collections builders to link selected language content to large pre-processed linguistic databases. An open methodology trialed at Queen Mary University of London in collaboration with the OER Research Hub at the UK Open University demonstrates how applying open corpus-based designs and technologies can enhance open educational practices among language teachers and subject academics for the preparation and delivery of courses in English for Specific Academic Purposes (ESAP)
Application Software, Domain-Specific Languages, and Language Design Assistants
While application software does the real work, domain-specific languages
(DSLs) are tools to help produce it efficiently, and language design assistants
in turn are meta-tools to help produce DSLs quickly. DSLs are already in wide
use (HTML for web pages, Excel macros for spreadsheet applications, VHDL for
hardware design, ...), but many more will be needed for both new as well as
existing application domains. Language design assistants to help develop them
currently exist only in the basic form of language development systems. After a
quick look at domain-specific languages, and especially their relationship to
application libraries, we survey existing language development systems and give
