    Computational modeling of improvisation in Turkish folk music using Variable-Length Markov Models

    The thesis describes a new database of uzun havas, a non-metered structured improvisation form in Turkish folk music, and a system, which uses Variable-Length Markov Models (VLMMs) to predict the melody in the uzun hava form. The database consists of 77 songs, encompassing 10849 notes, and it is used to train multiple viewpoints, where each event in a musical sequence are represented by parallel descriptors such as Durations and Notes. The thesis also introduces pitch-related viewpoints that are specifically aimed to model the unique melodic properties of makam music. The predictability of the system is quantitatively evaluated by an entropy based scheme. In the experiments, the results from the pitch-related viewpoints mapping 12-tone-scale of Western classical theory and 17 tone-scale of Turkish folk music are compared. It is shown that VLMMs are highly predictive in the note progressions of the transcriptions of uzun havas. This suggests that VLMMs may be applied to makam-based and non-metered musical forms, in addition to Western musical styles.     This paper proposes MapGPT which is a novel approach that integrates the capabilities of language models, specifically large language models (LLMs), with spatial data processing techniques. This paper introduces MapGPT, which aims to bridge the gap between natural language understanding and spatial data analysis by highlighting the relevant core building blocks. By combining the strengths of LLMs and geospatial analysis, MapGPT enables more accurate and contextually aware responses to location-based queries. The proposed methodology highlights building LLMs on spatial and textual data, utilizing tokenization and vector representations specific to spatial information. The paper also explores the challenges associated with generating spatial vector representations. Furthermore, the study discusses the potential of computational capabilities within MapGPT, allowing users to perform geospatial computations and obtain visualized outputs. Overall, this research paper presents the building blocks and methodology of MapGPT, highlighting its potential to enhance spatial data understanding and generation in natural language processing applications

    An aesthetics of touch: investigating the language of design relating to form

    How well can designers communicate qualities of touch? This paper presents evidence that they have some capability to do so, much of which appears to have been learned, but at present make limited use of such language. Interviews with graduate designer-makers suggest that they are aware of and value the importance of touch and materiality in their work, but lack a vocabulary to fully relate to their detailed explanations of other aspects such as their intent or selection of materials. We believe that more attention should be paid to the verbal dialogue that happens in the design process, particularly as other researchers show that even making-based learning also has a strong verbal element to it. However, verbal language alone does not appear to be adequate for a comprehensive language of touch. Graduate designers-makers’ descriptive practices combined non-verbal manipulation within verbal accounts. We thus argue that haptic vocabularies do not simply describe material qualities, but rather are situated competences that physically demonstrate the presence of haptic qualities. Such competencies are more important than groups of verbal vocabularies in isolation. Design support for developing and extending haptic competences must take this wide range of considerations into account to comprehensively improve designers’ capabilities

    Our MQP aimed to introduce finite state machine based techniques for natural language processing into Hunspell, the world\u27s premiere Open Source spell checker used in several prominent projects such as Firefox and Open Office. We created compact machine-readable finite state transducer representations of 26 of the most commonly used languages on Wikipedia. We then created an automata based spell checker. In addition, we implemented an transducer based stemmer, which will be used in the future of transducer based morphological analysis

    Automated Data Digitization System for Vehicle Registration Certificates Using Google Cloud Vision API

    This study aims to develop an automated data digitization system for the Thai vehicle registration certificate. It is the first system developed as a web service Application Programming Interface (API), which is essential for any enterprise to increase its business value. Currently, this system is available on “www.carjaidee.com”. The system involves four steps: 1) an embedded frame aligns a document to be correctly recognised in the image acquisition step; 2) sharpening and brightness filtering techniques to enhance image quality are applied in the pre-processing step; 3) the Google Cloud Vision API receives a prompt to proceed in the recognition step; 4) a specific domain dictionary to improve accuracy rate is developed for the post-processing step. This study defines 92 images for the experiment by counting the correct words and terms from the output. The findings suggest that the proposed method, which had an average accuracy of 93.28%, was significantly more accurate than the original method using only the Google Cloud Vision API. However, the system is limited because the dictionaries cannot automatically recognise a new word.     Landscape of sign language research based on smartphone apps: coherent literature analysis, motivations, open challenges, recommendations and future directions for app assessment

    Numerous nations have prioritised the inclusion of citizens with disabilities, such as hearing loss, in all aspects of social life. Sign language is used by this population, yet they still have trouble communicating with others. Many sign language apps are being created to help bridge the communication gap as a result of technology advances enabled by the widespread use of smartphones. These apps are widely used because they are accessible and inexpensive. The services and capabilities they offer and the quality of their content, however, differ greatly. Evaluation of the quality of the content provided by these applications is necessary if they are to have any kind of real effect. A thorough evaluation like this will inspire developers to work hard on new apps, which will lead to improved software development and experience overall. This research used a systematic literature review (SLR) method, which is recognised in gaining a broad understanding of the study whilst offer- ing additional information for future investigations. SLR was adopted in this research for smartphone-based sign language apps to understand the area and main discussion aspects utilised in the assessment. These studies were reviewed on the basis of related work analysis, main issues, discussions and methodological aspects. Results revealed that the evaluation of sign language mobile apps is scarce. Thus, we proposed a future direction for the quality assessment of these apps. The findings will benefit normal-hearing and hearing-impaired users and open up a new area where researchers and developers could work together on sign language mobile apps. The results will help hearing and non-hearing users and will pave the way for future collaboration between academicians and app developers in the field of sign language technology
