    Book Review

This book is absolutely unique in several respects. There exists bryological glossaries, usually in bryophyte floras. Most have no figures to illustrate the terms, and some have few drawings. And there exists the “Glossarium Polyglottum Bryologicae” published by the Missouri Botanical Garden, which is comprehensive but lacks any figures. Everybody having held identification courses in bryology knows the problems of beginners, who does not know what to imagine under terms, which are in common use in bryology, and even explanations in a glossary can give the beginner no real idea. This book gives an enumeration and definition of thousands of terms and illustrates hundreds

Bryophytes of Uganda : 1., BBS Tropical Bryology Group expeditions, 1996-1998 ; introduction and collecting sites

The British Bryological Society Tropical Bryology Group (TBG) undertook three expeditions to Uganda, in Jan-Feb 1996, Jan-Feb 1997 and June-Jul 1998. Collections were made from 134 sites, mainly from national parks and forest reserves in western and southern Uganda

Origin of the New Caledonian bryophytes

    Get PDF
The origin of a flora is one of the most interesting and challenging topics in bryology. However, it is a very difficult problem, and considerable effort is needed to accumulate more detailed information on the distribution and taxonomy of bryophytes than is available today

    Manual of tropical bryology

Bryophytes belong to the oldest land plants. They existed already in the Palaeozoic 300 mio years ago in forms which were hardly different from the extant species. They remained relatively unchanged with relatively low evolution rates (and are thus often called a „conservative“ plant group), but could successfully establish themselves in an always varying environment from Devonian swamps to Permian forests, Mesozoic deserts and as epiphytes in Tertiary rainforests. They are not eaten by snails or insects, and are resistant against fungi and bacteria

A systematic, literature-based compilation of bryophytes of Réunion Island has been made, with the additional examination of herbarium specimens. The list of 148 genera and 404 species and infraspecific taxa of mosses and 87 genera and 241 species and infraspecific taxa of hepatics and hornworts are here reported, including four mosses reported as new to Réunion

For locality data and a description of the collecting sites see the contribution by E. Fischer on the vegetation of the study area in this volume (Tropical Bryology 8: 13-37, 1993). The specimens are deposited at the Botanical MuseumBerlin (B) as well as in the herbarium of the author (except for unicates)

100 years of tropical bryophyte and lichen ecology : a bibliographic guide to the literature from 1901 - 2000

    Get PDF
A list of 401 citations pertaining to the ecology of tropical bryophytes and lichens is presented. The bibliography includes publications addressing the biology, ecology, natural history, and physiology of bryophytes and lichens, but generally eschews taxonomic and floristic papers. All citations have been verified, unless denoted with an asterisk (*). An appendix that groups citations by category is provided

A checklist of the bryophytes of Distrito Federal (Brasília, Brazil)

The Distrito Federal, one of the most important centers of plant endemism in central Brazil, is located in the center of Brazil, with an area of 5,814 km2 at coordinates 15o30’ S, 16o03’W. Cerrado vegetation covers the region. The main city in the Distrito Federal is Brasília, the capital of Brazil with a population of 2.5 million. In the last two decades the anthropogenic action has reduced the original plant cover drastically. In this paper a checklist of the bryophytes (Marchantiophyta, Bryophyta and Anthocerotophyta) is presented. A total of 176 species are listed, 114 among Bryophyta, 61 among Marchantiophyta and 1 in the Anthocerotophyta.

Contributions to the bryoflora of Australia 1

During a joint field trip organised by H. Streimann in 1999, the authors collected large amount of bryophytes in Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria states and in the Austral Capital Territory (A.C.T.). Some of them proved to be new state records, or new records for Australia. The list below is the first selection of these records in Hepaticae, with 16 species newly reported from the whole continent
