Body camera footage leads to lower judgments of intent than dash camera footage.
Police departments use body-worn cameras (body cams) and dashboard cameras (dash cams) to monitor the activity of police officers in the field. Video from these cameras informs review of police conduct in disputed circumstances, often with the goal of determining an officer's intent. Eight experiments (N = 2,119) reveal that body cam video of an incident results in lower observer judgments of intentionality than dash cam video of the same incident, an effect documented with both scripted videos and real police videos. This effect was due, in part, to variation in the visual salience of the focal actor: the body cam wearer is typically less visually salient when depicted in body versus dash cam video, which corresponds with lower observer intentionality judgments. In showing how visual salience of the focal actor may introduce unique effects on observer judgment, this research establishes an empirical platform that may inform public policy regarding surveillance of police conduct
New meteor showers identified in the CAMS and SonotaCo meteoroid orbit surveys
A cluster analysis was applied to the combined meteoroid orbit database
derived from low-light level video observations by the SonotaCo consortium in
Japan (64,650 meteors observed between 2007 and 2009) and by the Cameras for
All-sky Meteor Surveillance (CAMS) project in California, during its first year
of operation (40,744 meteors from Oct. 21, 2010 to Dec. 31, 2011). The
objective was to identify known and potentially new meteoroid streams and
identify their parent bodies. The database was examined by a single-linking
algorithm using the Southworth and Hawkins D-criterion to identify similar
orbits, with a low criterion threshold of D < 0.05. A minimum member threshold
of 6 produced a total of 88 meteoroid streams. 43 are established streams and
45 are newly identified streams. The newly identified streams were included as
numbers 448-502 in the IAU Meteor Shower Working List. Potential parent bodies

Differential alphav integrin-mediated Ras-ERK signaling during two pathways of angiogenesis.
Antagonists of alphavbeta3 and alphavbeta5 disrupt angiogenesis in response to bFGF and VEGF, respectively. Here, we show that these alphav integrins differentially contribute to sustained Ras-extracellular signal-related kinase (Ras-ERK) signaling in blood vessels, a requirement for endothelial cell survival and angiogenesis. Inhibition of FAK or alphavbeta5 disrupted VEGF-mediated Ras and c-Raf activity on the chick chorioallantoic membrane, whereas blockade of FAK or integrin alphavbeta3 had no effect on bFGF-mediated Ras activity, but did suppress c-Raf activation. Furthermore, retroviral delivery of active Ras or c-Raf promoted ERK activity and angiogenesis, which anti-alphavbeta5 blocked upstream of Ras, whereas anti-alphavbeta3 blocked downstream of Ras, but upstream of c-Raf. The activation of c-Raf by bFGF/alphavbeta3 not only depended on FAK, but also required p21-activated kinase-dependent phosphorylation of serine 338 on c-Raf, whereas VEGF-mediated c-Raf phosphorylation/activation depended on Src, but not Pak. Thus, integrins alphavbeta3 and alphavbeta5 differentially regulate the Ras-ERK pathway, accounting for distinct vascular responses during two pathways of angiogenesis
Policing the Admissibility of Body Camera Evidence
Body cameras are sweeping the nation and becoming, along with the badge and gun, standard issue for police officers. These cameras are intended to ensure accountability for abusive police officers. But, if history is any guide, the videos they produce will more commonly be used to prosecute civilians than to document abuse. Further, knowing that the footage will be available as evidence, police officers have an incentive to narrate body camera videos with descriptive oral statements that support a later prosecution. Captured on an official record that exclusively documents the police officer’s perspective, these statements—for example, “he just threw something into the bushes” or “your breath smells of alcohol”—have the potential to be convincing evidence. Their admissibility is complicated, however, by conflicting currents in evidence law. Oral statements made by police officers during an arrest, chase, or other police-civilian interaction will typically constitute hearsay if offered as substantive evidence at a later proceeding. Yet the statements will readily qualify for admission under a variety of hearsay exceptions, including, most intriguingly, the little-used present sense impression exception. At the same time, a number of evidence doctrines generally prohibit the use of official out-of-court statements against criminal defendants. This Article unpacks the conflicting doctrines to highlight a complex, but elegant, pathway for courts to analyze the admissibility of police statements captured on body cameras. The result is that the most normatively problematic statements should be excluded under current doctrine, while many other statements will be admissible to aid fact finders in assessing disputed events

An automated apparatus is reported for sequentially assaying urine samples for the presence of bacterial adenosine triphosphate (ATP) that comprises a rotary table which carries a plurality of sample containing vials and automatically dispenses fluid reagents into the vials preparatory to injecting a light producing luciferase-luciferin mixture into the samples. The device automatically measures the light produced in each urine sample by a bioluminescence reaction of the free bacterial adenosine triphosphate with the luciferase-luciferin mixture. The light measured is proportional to the concentration of bacterial adenosine triphosphate which, in turn, is proportional to the number of bacteria present in the respective urine sample

The Portrayal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Mass Print Magazines Since 1980
Objectives: The objectives of this study were to examine and describe the portrayal of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in mass print media magazines.
Design: The sample included all 37 articles found in magazines with circulation rates of greater than 1 million published in the United States and Canada from 1980 to 2005. The analysis was quantitative and qualitative and included investigation of both manifest and latent magazine story messages.
Results: Manifest analysis noted that CAM was largely represented as a treatment for a patient with a medically diagnosed illness or specific symptoms. Discussions used biomedical terms such as patient rather than consumer and disease rather than wellness. Latent analysis revealed three themes: (1) CAMs were described as good but not good enough; (2) individualism and consumerism were venerated; and (3) questions of costs were raised in the context of confusion and ambivalence
