PLEs from virtual ethnography of social web
El resultado de la experiencia etnográfica es un modelo descriptivo de la web 2.0 basado en un Entorno Personal de Aprendizaje (PLE).This article presents an exploratory research based on the virtual ethnography from an environment of research and learning including new technologies. The ethnography is a method of qualitative research of social sciences that is mainly used in the socio-cultural anthropology, where it has its theoretical basis. The target was to explore the web 2.0 and its tools. The process of participant observation is by means of a blog, other tools and virtual communities. The result is a descriptive model of the web 2.0 based on a Personal Learning Environment which developed in the ethnographic experience
Blogging: self presentation and privacy
Blogs are permeating most niches of social life, and addressing a wide range of topics from scholarly and political issues1 to family and children’s daily lives. By their very nature, blogs raise a number of privacy issues as they are easy to produce and disseminate, resulting in large amounts of sometimes personal information being broadcast across the Internet in a persistent and cumulative manner. This article reports the preliminary findings of an online survey of bloggers from around the world. The survey explored bloggers’ subjective sense of privacy by examining their blogging practices and their expectations of privacy when publishing online. The findings suggest that blogging offers individuals a unique opportunity to work on their self-identity via the degree of self-expression and social interaction that is available in this medium. This finding helps to explain why bloggers consciously bring the ‘private’ to the public realm, despite the inherent privacy risks they face in doing so
Comparison of the language networks from literature and blogs
In this paper we present the comparison of the linguistic networks from
literature and blog texts. The linguistic networks are constructed from texts
as directed and weighted co-occurrence networks of words. Words are nodes and
links are established between two nodes if they are directly co-occurring
within the sentence. The comparison of the networks structure is performed at
global level (network) in terms of: average node degree, average shortest path
length, diameter, clustering coefficient, density and number of components.
Furthermore, we perform analysis on the local level (node) by comparing the
rank plots of in and out degree, strength and selectivity. The
selectivity-based results point out that there are differences between the
structure of the networks constructed from literature and blogs
Con esta experiencia se consigue motivar a los alumnos, mejorar la alfabetización digital y hacer que los alumnos sean constructores de su propio conocimientoThis experience is based on the use of blogs for the Improvement of Teaching-Learning Process in the field of Secondary Education and constructive development of knowledge making the student responsible for their own learning within the framework established by the new School Program Guidelines 2.0. This tool will offer innovative opportunities for the effective knowledge management. A group of students of 1º ESO work part of the subject of Social Sciences building their own digital blog, conducting research on the Internet on various topics of the course. With this experience we succeed in motivating students, improving digital literacy and making students be constructors of their own knowledge
Where is the game? Wild meat products authentication in South Africa: a case study
Wild animals’ meat is extensively consumed in South Africa, being obtained either from ranching, farming or hunting. To test the authenticity of the commercial labels of meat products in the local market, we obtained DNA sequence information from 146 samples (14 beef and 132 game labels) for barcoding cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and partial cytochrome b and mitochondrial fragments. The reliability of species assignments were evaluated using BLAST searches in GenBank, maximum likelihood phylogenetic analysis and the characterbased method implemented in BLOG. The Kimura-2-parameter intra- and interspecific variation was evaluated for all matched speciesFil: D'Amato, Maria Eugenia. University of Hull. Inference of the Russian drug community from one of the largest social networks in the Russian Federation
The criminal nature of narcotics complicates the direct assessment of a drug
community, while having a good understanding of the type of people drawn or
currently using drugs is vital for finding effective intervening strategies.
Especially for the Russian Federation this is of immediate concern given the
dramatic increase it has seen in drug abuse since the fall of the Soviet Union
in the early nineties. Using unique data from the Russian social network
'LiveJournal' with over 39 million registered users worldwide, we were able for
the first time to identify the on-line drug community by context sensitive text
mining of the users' blogs using a dictionary of known drug-related official
and 'slang' terminology. By comparing the interests of the users that most
actively spread information on narcotics over the network with the interests of
the individuals outside the on-line drug community, we found that the 'average'
drug user in the Russian Federation is generally mostly interested in topics
such as Russian rock, non-traditional medicine, UFOs, Buddhism, yoga and the
occult. We identify three distinct scale-free sub-networks of users which can
be uniquely classified as being either 'infectious', 'susceptible' or 'immune'.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figure
