    A Review and Analysis of Eye-Gaze Estimation Systems, Algorithms and Performance Evaluation Methods in Consumer Platforms

    In this paper a review is presented of the research on eye gaze estimation techniques and applications, that has progressed in diverse ways over the past two decades. Several generic eye gaze use-cases are identified: desktop, TV, head-mounted, automotive and handheld devices. Analysis of the literature leads to the identification of several platform specific factors that influence gaze tracking accuracy. A key outcome from this review is the realization of a need to develop standardized methodologies for performance evaluation of gaze tracking systems and achieve consistency in their specification and comparative evaluation.     Active Estimation of Distance in a Robotic Vision System that Replicates Human Eye Movement

    Many visual cues, both binocular and monocular, provide 3D information. When an agent moves with respect to a scene, an important cue is the different motion of objects located at various distances. While a motion parallax is evident for large translations of the agent, in most head/eye systems a small parallax occurs also during rotations of the cameras. A similar parallax is present also in the human eye. During a relocation of gaze, the shift in the retinal projection of an object depends not only on the amplitude of the movement, but also on the distance of the object with respect to the observer. This study proposes a method for estimating distance on the basis of the parallax that emerges from rotations of a camera. A pan/tilt system specifically designed to reproduce the oculomotor parallax present in the human eye was used to replicate the oculomotor strategy by which humans scan visual scenes. We show that the oculomotor parallax provides accurate estimation of distance during sequences of eye movements. In a system that actively scans a visual scene, challenging tasks such as image segmentation and figure/ground segregation greatly benefit from this cue.National Science Foundation (BIC-0432104, CCF-0130851

    High-Accuracy Gaze Estimation for Interpolation-Based Eye-Tracking Methods

    This study investigates the influence of the eye-camera location associated with the accuracy and precision of interpolation-based eye-tracking methods. Several factors can negatively influence gaze estimation methods when building a commercial or off-the-shelf eye tracker device, including the eye-camera location in uncalibrated setups. Our experiments show that the eye-camera location combined with the non-coplanarity of the eye plane deforms the eye feature distribution when the eye-camera is far from the eye’s optical axis. This paper proposes geometric transformation methods to reshape the eye feature distribution based on the virtual alignment of the eye-camera in the center of the eye’s optical axis. The data analysis uses eye-tracking data from a simulated environment and an experiment with 83 volunteer participants (55 males and 28 females). We evaluate the improvements achieved with the proposed methods using Gaussian analysis, which defines a range for high-accuracy gaze estimation between −0.5∘ and 0.5∘. Compared to traditional polynomial-based and homography-based gaze estimation methods, the proposed methods increase the number of gaze estimations in the high-accuracy range

    Deep into the Eyes: Applying Machine Learning to improve Eye-Tracking

    Eye-tracking has been an active research area with applications in personal and behav- ioral studies, medical diagnosis, virtual reality, and mixed reality applications. Improving the robustness, generalizability, accuracy, and precision of eye-trackers while maintaining privacy is crucial. Unfortunately, many existing low-cost portable commercial eye trackers suffer from signal artifacts and a low signal-to-noise ratio. These trackers are highly depen- dent on low-level features such as pupil edges or diffused bright spots in order to precisely localize the pupil and corneal reflection. As a result, they are not reliable for studying eye movements that require high precision, such as microsaccades, smooth pursuit, and ver- gence. Additionally, these methods suffer from reflective artifacts, occlusion of the pupil boundary by the eyelid and often require a manual update of person-dependent parame- ters to identify the pupil region. In this dissertation, I demonstrate (I) a new method to improve precision while maintaining the accuracy of head-fixed eye trackers by combin- ing velocity information from iris textures across frames with position information, (II) a generalized semantic segmentation framework for identifying eye regions with a further extension to identify ellipse fits on the pupil and iris, (III) a data-driven rendering pipeline to generate a temporally contiguous synthetic dataset for use in many eye-tracking ap- plications, and (IV) a novel strategy to preserve privacy in eye videos captured as part of the eye-tracking process. My work also provides the foundation for future research by addressing critical questions like the suitability of using synthetic datasets to improve eye-tracking performance in real-world applications, and ways to improve the precision of future commercial eye trackers with improved camera specifications

    Quantitative Binocular Assessment Using Infrared Video Photoscreening

    Photorefraction is a technique that has been used in the past two decades for pediatric vision screening. The technique uses a digital or photographic camera to capture the examinee‟s retinal reflex from a light source that is located near the camera‟s lens. It has the advantages of being objective, binocular and low cost, which make it a good candidate for pediatric screening when compared to other methods. Although many children have been screened using this technique in the U.S., its sensitivity and other disadvantages make it unacceptable for continued use. The Adaptive Photorefraction system (APS) was developed at the Center for Laser Applications (CLA) at the University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) to correct the problems in the existing PS devices. APS was designed to determine quantitatively binocular refractive errors and strabismus and to accomplish these tasks objectively, without the need of medical professionals, and it is capable of performing these objectives and reporting the digitally recorded results within one- to-two minutes. In this dissertation, two APS prototypes were constructed, and measurements were performed using both an artificial eye and human subjects. Binocular measurements of refractive error were determined, and the effects of the variation of pupil-size and gaze angle were determined. After initial corrections for ocular scattering effects, measurement of the binocular refractive error of forty human subjects was achieved, and in the myopic region with uncertainty of the method was 0.6 diopter. Ocular alignment determinations were achieved, and using a novel cover-uncover test, strabismus detection was demonstrated

    The influence of eye model parameter variations on simulated eye-tracking outcomes

    The simulated data used in eye-tracking-related research has been largely generated using normative eye models with little consideration of how the variations in eye biometry found in the population may influence eye-tracking outcomes. This study investigated the influence that variations in eye model parameters have on the ability of simulated data to predict real-world eye-tracking outcomes. The real-world experiments performed by two pertinent comparative studies were replicated in a simulated environment using a high-complexity stochastic eye model that includes anatomically accurate distributions of eye biometry parameters. The outcomes showed that variations in anterior corneal asphericity significantly influence simulated eye-tracking outcomes of both interpolation and model-based gaze estimation algorithms. Other, more commonly varied parameters such as the corneal radius of curvature and foveal offset angle had little influence on simulated outcomes.
