A survey of performance enhancement of transmission control protocol (TCP) in wireless ad hoc networks
This Article is provided by the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund - Copyright @ 2011 Springer OpenTransmission control protocol (TCP), which provides reliable end-to-end data delivery, performs well in traditional wired network environments, while in wireless ad hoc networks, it does not perform well. Compared to wired networks, wireless ad hoc networks have some specific characteristics such as node mobility and a shared medium. Owing to these specific characteristics of wireless ad hoc networks, TCP faces particular problems with, for example, route failure, channel contention and high bit error rates. These factors are responsible for the performance degradation of TCP in wireless ad hoc networks. The research community has produced a wide range of proposals to improve the performance of TCP in wireless ad hoc networks. This article presents a survey of these proposals (approaches). A classification of TCP improvement proposals for wireless ad hoc networks is presented, which makes it easy to compare the proposals falling under the same category. Tables which summarize the approaches for quick overview are provided. Possible directions for further improvements in this area are suggested in the conclusions. Personal data breach notification system in the European Union: Interpretation of “without undue delay”

The expansion of computing functions, speed of processing and storage capabilities makes personal information difficult to be controlled. In the EU, the revised EC e-Privacy Directive amended by the Directive 2009/136/EC modifies existing provisions and makes new provisions to enhance privacy protection in the electronic communications sector, which includes the further development of the system of notification of the personal data breach to minimise adverse effects. This paper aims to examine and evaluate the personal data breach notification system, interpret the requirement of "without undue delay" duty and discuss the impact of the revised Directive to business organisations. It finally proposes solutions to improve the notification system to increase the efficiency of privacy protection
Quality-constrained routing in publish/subscribe systems
Routing in publish/subscribe (pub/sub) features a communication model where messages are not given explicit destination addresses, but destinations are determined by matching the subscription declared by subscribers. For a dynamic computing environment with applications that have quality demands, this is not sufficient. Routing decision should, in such environments, not only depend on the subscription predicate, but should also take the quality-constraints of applications and characteristics of network paths into account. We identified three abstraction levels of these quality constraints: functional, middleware and network. The main contribution of the paper is the concept of the integration of these constraints into the pub/sub routing. This is done by extending the syntax of pub/sub system and applying four generic, proposed by us, guidelines. The added values of quality-constrained routing concept are: message delivery satisfying quality demands of applications, improvement of system scalability and more optimise use of the network resources. We discuss the use case that shows the practical value of our concept
Reliable and timely event notification for publish/subscribe services over the internet
The publish/subscribe paradigm is gaining attention for the development of several applications in wide area networks (WANs) due to its intrinsic time, space, and synchronization decoupling properties that meet the scalability and asynchrony requirements of those applications. However, while the communication in a WAN may be affected by the unpredictable behavior of the network, with messages that can be dropped or delayed, existing publish/subscribe solutions pay just a little attention to addressing these issues. On the contrary, applications such as business intelligence, critical infrastructures, and financial services require delivery guarantees with strict temporal deadlines. In this paper, we propose a framework that enforces both reliability and timeliness for publish/subscribe services over WAN. Specifically, we combine two different approaches: gossiping, to retrieve missing packets in case of incomplete information, and network coding, to reduce the number of retransmissions and, consequently, the latency. We provide an analytical model that describes the information recovery capabilities of our algorithm and a simulation-based study, taking into account a real workload from the Air Traffic Control domain, which evidences how the proposed solution is able to ensure reliable event notification over a WAN within a reasonable bounded time window. © 2013 IEEE
System Support for Bandwidth Management and Content Adaptation in Internet Applications
This paper describes the implementation and evaluation of an operating system
module, the Congestion Manager (CM), which provides integrated network flow
management and exports a convenient programming interface that allows
applications to be notified of, and adapt to, changing network conditions. We
describe the API by which applications interface with the CM, and the
architectural considerations that factored into the design. To evaluate the
architecture and API, we describe our implementations of TCP; a streaming
layered audio/video application; and an interactive audio application using the
CM, and show that they achieve adaptive behavior without incurring much
end-system overhead. All flows including TCP benefit from the sharing of
congestion information, and applications are able to incorporate new
functionality such as congestion control and adaptive behavior.Comment: 14 pages, appeared in OSDI 200
