De la ficción a la urgencia informativa: la matanza de Utoya y el análisis prospectivo de Stieg Larsson

The violent irruption in all newsrooms of the Oslo terrorist attack and the killings of Utoya lead journalists to look for an inmediate understanding of the facts. The usual informative analysis wasn’t able to explain the causes of what had happenef and the international background directed to other conflicts unrelated to that situation. International public opinion looked for the deep explanation to the attacks in the Swedish writer Stieg Larsson’s trilogy Millenium. The analysis of the chronicles published in the Spanish press the days after the attack corroborates the bitter political and social diagnosis that is behind the success of Scandinavian present day thrillers.

Objective There exist significant gaps in our understanding and knowledge of the contributory factors which give rise to the development of a mass shooter. Method A case analysis is presented of Anders Behring Breivik who engaged in a bombing and shooting spree in Norway on July 22, 2011. Results The case analysis presents that he has diagnoses of Asperger's Syndrome, Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and Antisocial Personality Traits/Disorder. Additionally, a forensic profile is presented that a narcissistic decompensation contributed to him developing a depression, followed by rewrite his life story where he is a hero defending Europe against a conspiracy. However his personal and political grievances and violent ideation placed him onto the Path to Intended/Terroristic Violence, which culminated in the attacks in Norway. Conclusions The present study suggests that there may be an association between NPD and violence, similar to other studies. However, the factor of narcissistic decompensation (possibly co-occurring with an Asperger's coping strategy) was presented as a critical component of NPD that mediated its relationship with violence

Responsible Brains: Neuroscience, Law, and Human Culpability

[This download includes the table of contents and chapter 1.] When we praise, blame, punish, or reward people for their actions, we are holding them responsible for what they have done. Common sense tells us that what makes human beings responsible has to do with their minds and, in particular, the relationship between their minds and their actions. Yet the empirical connection is not necessarily obvious. The “guilty mind” is a core concept of criminal law, but if a defendant on trial for murder were found to have serious brain damage, which brain parts or processes would have to be damaged for him to be considered not responsible, or less responsible, for the crime? The authors argue that evidence from neuroscience and the other cognitive sciences can illuminate the nature of responsibility and agency. They go on to offer a novel and comprehensive neuroscientific theory of human responsibility

After the 22 July Terror in Norway. Media Debates on Freedom of Expression and Multiculturalism

    Get PDF
This article analyses the mainstream press coverage of the terror in Norway post 22.07.2011 and discusses how and in what context the concepts of freedom of expression and multiculturalism occur. The aim has been to map important discursive trends in the aftermath of the terror. A clear division between different victim positions is identified. One blames majority society for not granting enough space to extreme right wing views on Islam and diversity/ multiculturalism; another one sees the terror connected to a majority society that already has demonstrated a high degree of hostility towards migrants and Muslims. Thus, two different understandings of the status for freedom of expression in Norway occur, linked to differing positions on the diversity society

Exclusion and Xenophobia: Norwegian society\u27s influences on Anders Behring Breivik\u27s counter-jihadism

On July 22nd 2011 Norway was shocked by the first terrorist attacks on Norwegian soil since the German occupation during World War II. As Norway is internationally renowned as a peaceful and idyllic society the terrorist attacks, questions of why the attacks took place in Norway arose. My thesis examines which societal factors in Norway have contributed to Anders Behring Breivik\u27s terrorist attacks in Oslo and on Utøya, July 22nd 2011. To do so, I have employed qualitative content analysis of newspaper articles which has allowed me to extract themes relevant to determine which factors in the Norwegian society have influenced Behring Breivik. Through this analysis I found the following primary recurrent themes; rejection of the right wing by Norwegian society, political censorship of the right wing, dismissal of Behring Breivik as insane and the prevalence of xenophobic sentiments, primarily directed at Muslims, in Norwegian society. Based on these themes I have identified exclusion of the right wing in addition to the prevalence of xenophobic sentiments in Norwegian society have had an effect on Behring Breivik\u27s radicalization into a terrorist

A day in the “swamp”:understanding discourse in the online counter-jihad nebula

    Get PDF
The counter-jihad scene can be understood variously as a collection of parties, pundits, and movements all linked by a common belief that the West is being subjected to takeover by Muslims. In this article, I seek to improve academic understanding of this collection of movements, parties, and ideas by analyzing the discourse presented by a collection of online advocates whom I describe as the counter-jihad nebula. The findings suggest a need to at least partially re-evaluate the role of the nebula within the wider counter-jihad scene as well as the relationship between the wider counter-jihad scene and mainstream political discourse as expressed through various media outlets

Crisis Communication as a Pedagogical Method in Media & Communication Studies and in Journalism Studies in Norway

Crisis communication has been a regular topic in Media & Communication Studies and in Journalism Studies in Norway for many years. This article outlines experiences at Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences (HiOA) with taking part in two large-scale anti-terror exercises in 2006 and 2012 in and around the Norwegian capital Oslo. The main organizers were The Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Planning and The Norwegian Police Directorate. Students from The Department of Journalism and Media Studies at HiOA staffed online (intranet) newspapers to simulate “media pressure” on 40–50 key institutions with a total of 4,000-5,000 staff from all management levels right up to the Prime Minister’s office. The analysis and findings confirm that from the vantage point of a tertiary education institution, the benefits of taking part by far outweighed some drawbacks. Specifically, the exercises a) gave students first-hand experience in crisis communication and crisis management; b) have improved conceptually and take into account relevant crisis communication theory; c) reflect that Norway still has to come to terms with the tragic events of 22 July 2011 when 77 Norwegians were murdered by a Norwegian terrorist; d) suggest that many of the 40–50 organizations singled out to be trained in the exercises are still inadequately prepared for terror strikes
