Assessing Vocabulary of Children: Investigating the Evaluation and Instruction of Basic Concepts
Vocabulary knowledge of preschool children is a key factor in predicting literacy success in elementary school (Hammer, Farkas, & Maczuga, 2010). However, few deliberate attempts to teach basic concept vocabulary have been studied (Bowers & Schwarz, 2013; Wilson, 2004). The purpose of this research is to determine if large group explicit instruction with interactive activities of specific basic concept vocabulary will increase preschool children\u27s understanding of basic concept terms when measured by a standardized basic concept assessment. This research will also assess the validity of a basic concept-curriculum based measure (BC-CBM) as an efficient tool to monitor a child\u27s understanding of basic concept vocabulary over time. There were 30 preschool children (M age=53.8 months) who participated in this experiment. Results demonstrated the standardized assessment and BC-BM raw scores improved through intervention. Further research is supported to evaluate the BC-CBM on a larger scale and control for more factors, which influence vocabulary development in children.

Inference and Evaluation of the Multinomial Mixture Model for Text Clustering
In this article, we investigate the use of a probabilistic model for
unsupervised clustering in text collections. Unsupervised clustering has become
a basic module for many intelligent text processing applications, such as
information retrieval, text classification or information extraction. The model
considered in this contribution consists of a mixture of multinomial
distributions over the word counts, each component corresponding to a different
theme. We present and contrast various estimation procedures, which apply both
in supervised and unsupervised contexts. In supervised learning, this work
suggests a criterion for evaluating the posterior odds of new documents which
is more statistically sound than the "naive Bayes" approach. In an unsupervised
context, we propose measures to set up a systematic evaluation framework and
start with examining the Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm as the basic
tool for inference. We discuss the importance of initialization and the
influence of other features such as the smoothing strategy or the size of the
vocabulary, thereby illustrating the difficulties incurred by the high
dimensionality of the parameter space. We also propose a heuristic algorithm
based on iterative EM with vocabulary reduction to solve this problem. Using
the fact that the latent variables can be analytically integrated out, we
finally show that Gibbs sampling algorithm is tractable and compares favorably
to the basic expectation maximization approach

The composition of InxGa1 − xN nanorods grown by molecular beam epitaxy with nominal x = 0.5 has been mapped by electron microscopy using Z-contrast imaging and x-ray microanalysis. This shows a coherent and highly strained core-shell structure with a near atomically sharp boundary between a Ga-rich shell (x∼0.3) and an In-rich core (x∼ 0.7), which itself has In- and Ga-rich platelets alternating along the growth axis. It is proposed that the shell and core regions are lateral and vertical growth sectors, with the core structure determined by spinodal decomposition
The Principles and the Teaching of English Vocabulary: a Review
The importance of vocabulary, its types, selection criteria, size and depth, and teaching principles were found unclear. The present article seeks to respond to such challenge. To achieve the mentioned goals, we did a systematic review to previously related studies and theories. The results showed that the vocabulary was found to be more functional as a basis for communication, a reflection of social reality, emotion booster, and academic ability predictor. It also revealed that its contribution to the basic language skills varied. Finally, the principles of teaching vocabulary, size and depth, and teaching and learning vocabulary materials (TLVMs) appeared to be associated with student\u27s vocabulary mastery.

Donohue et al.’s critique of our work on the origins and spread of the Austronesian language family is marred by misunderstandings of our approach.
We respond to these by noting that our Bayesian phylogenetic approach: (1)
distinguishes between retentions and innovations probabilistically, (2) focuses
on basic vocabulary not ‘the lexicon’, (3) eliminates known loanwords, (4) produces
results that are congruent with the results of the comparative method and conflict with the scenarios requiring unprecedented amounts of language shift postulated by Donohue et al
