A Measurement of Newton's Gravitational Constant

    Get PDF
A precision measurement of the gravitational constant GG has been made using a beam balance. Special attention has been given to determining the calibration, the effect of a possible nonlinearity of the balance and the zero-point variation of the balance. The equipment, the measurements and the analysis are described in detail. The value obtained for G is 6.674252(109)(54) 10^{-11} m3 kg-1 s-2. The relative statistical and systematic uncertainties of this result are 16.3 10^{-6} and 8.1 10^{-6}, respectively.Comment: 26 pages, 20 figures, Accepted for publication by Phys. Rev.

Weighted Point Cloud Augmentation for Neural Network Training Data Class-Imbalance

Recent developments in the field of deep learning for 3D data have demonstrated promising potential for end-to-end learning directly from point clouds. However, many real-world point clouds contain a large class im-balance due to the natural class im-balance observed in nature. For example, a 3D scan of an urban environment will consist mostly of road and facade, whereas other objects such as poles will be under-represented. In this paper we address this issue by employing a weighted augmentation to increase classes that contain fewer points. By mitigating the class im-balance present in the data we demonstrate that a standard PointNet++ deep neural network can achieve higher performance at inference on validation data. This was observed as an increase of F1 score of 19% and 25% on two test benchmark datasets; ScanNet and Semantic3D respectively where no class im-balance pre-processing had been performed. Our networks performed better on both highly-represented and under-represented classes, which indicates that the network is learning more robust and meaningful features when the loss function is not overly exposed to only a few classes.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, submitted for ISPRS Geospatial Week conference 201

Influence of diffusion on models for non-equilibrium wetting

It is shown that the critical properties of a recently studied model for non-equilibrium wetting are robust if one extends the dynamic rules by single-particle diffusion on terraces of the wetting layer. Examining the behavior at the critical point and along the phase transition line, we identify a special point in the phase diagram where detailed balance of the dynamical processes is partially broken.Comment: 6 pages, 9 figure

Short Notes about Financial Reporting in Italian Family Businesses

The main purpose of the paper is to analyse some features regarding economic and financial communication in Italian family companies. This is a theoretical essay focuses on to point out the new role played by balance sheet as a public document which carries all information needed by players operating both inside and outside the company. Paper shows the long and troubled process of transforming balance sheet from internal document to an official document useful to stakeholder to measure and evaluate family business performance and to implement accountable and responsible behaviour. The most important aspects being considered are: 1) the relationship link-ing balance sheet and stakeholders; 2) the relationship between company-family and patrimony-marriage; 3) the consequences caused to the balance sheet by measurement regulations.family business; balance sheet; accountability; financial reporting; firm behaviour; stakeholders.
