Mapping the sustainable development goals into the EDINSOST sustainability map of bachelor engineering degrees

Over recent years, there has been a growth in the importance of working sustainability based on the SDGs. To identify which learning objective of each SDG corresponds to each learning outcome of the EDINSOST Sustainability Map, a correspondence matrix has been defined. The matrix contains the learning outcomes of the EDINSOST Sustainability Map in its rows, and the 17 SDGs in the columns. The cells of the matrix contain the learning objectives of the SDGs that correspond to each learning outcome of the EDINSOST Sustainability Map. This work in progress presents the first results of the process of mapping the SDGs into the EDINSOST Sustainability Map of Engineering Bachelor Degrees. Early results show that some of the 169 learning objectives are not applicable to Engineering Degrees. Likewise, we have seen that learning objectives have been defined more for policy makers than for engineers, and therefore adaptation is not an easy task. Research activities in the first two cycles of European Biosystems engineering university studies - Situation in the Netherlands
Wageningen University has implemented the bachelor – master model by 2003. The biosystems related programmes of Wageningen University are the BSc Agrotechnology and the MSc Agricultural and Bioresource Engineering. The bachelor programme has a size of 180 credits and the master programme a size of 120 credits. Both 1st and 2nd cycle programmes have a strong focus on research. A thesis is part of both programmes; the size is 12 credits for the bachelor thesis (to be increased to 24 by 2010) and 36 for the master thesis. An important difference between the bachelor and the master thesis is the level of independence. The bachelor thesis work is more structured than the master thesis work. Most of the thesis work is related to ongoing research projects. In the bachelor programme there are several courses that confront students with research and in which they learn research and academic skills. In this way the students gradually learn what research is and how to do it. In the master programme there are only a few courses related to the research skills; the students that start with the master are supposed to posses these skills. The BSc degree is not considered as an end point but is a pivot point for choosing a master. Therefore there are no research positions for persons having only BSc degree. Research positions in industry require at least a MSc degree but the trend is that more and more a PhD is required. Senior research positions within the research organizations require in most cased a PhD and within the university it is a basic requirement
Adapting to a changing highschool population
This paper reports the recent changes in the EE Bachelor program at the University of Twente. Recent generations of freshman students exhibited a lack in mathematics skills and the ability to grasp the physics behind the equations. By starting of the curriculum with a new course “Introduction to electronics and electrical engineering (IEEE)�? we have managed to solve the issue of lacking entry levels while simultaneously eliminating the unmotivated or under skilled students in a very early stage in their studies
Study of heat and mass transfer applications in the field of engineering by using OpenFOAM
The aim of the project is to study OpenFOAM software and establish a well-based guide of standard and complex heat and mass transfer applications in engineering. OpenFOAM is a free, open source CFD software package. By being open, OpenFOAM offers users complete freedom to customise and extend its existing functionality. On the other hand, OpenFOAM offers a quick start user guide and there also is little available documentation and several examples. Thus, the project intends to: - Prepare an introductory and complete user guide to OpenFOAM with solved standard heat and mass transfer applications to the beginners, specially bachelor students ‐ Numerical simulation of complex heat and mass transfer applications in engineering with OpenFOAM in two‐ and three‐dimensional problems ‐ Practice in developing engineering projects by combining technical work with economic and environmental aspectsThe main tasks to be carried out in this project will be to: - Edit problems solved with OpenFOAM including explanations and detailed considerations in order to prepare a guide for new learners, specially bachelor students - Work in the study and analysis of heat and mass transfer simulations involving real engineering problems - Determine feasibility of the engineering project to be carried out - Study the socio-economics aspects in fluid dynamics applications solved by numerical simulation and fields of interest - Results analysi
Solar energy systems course for Energy Engineering students in the context of the European higher education area
The Bologna Process is a voluntary intergovernmental European cooperation initiative that led to the creation of the named European Higher Education Area (EHEA). EHEA was formed to promote mobility, increase academic recognition and attract students and staff from around the world to Europe. In this framework, since 2009, the Barcelona College of Industrial Engineering (Escuela Universitaria de Ingeniería Técnica Industrial de Barcelona – EUETIB) of the Technical University of Catalonia – BarcelonaTech (UPC) is offering the 4-year Bachelor Degree in Energy Engineering since 2009 with a total number of ECTS credits of 240. Current article deals with the inclusion of the sizing and design of solar energy systems in the context of this degree. The relationship between engineering bachelor qualifications and occupational status in Australia
Internationally, the importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) for innovation and competition drives concerns about the adequacy of national STEM workforces. Data from the UK, USA and Australia suggest that, even immediately post-graduation, a significant proportion of engineering bachelor graduates do not work in engineering roles. Using the 2011 Australian census data, we present an investigation into the relationship between educational qualifications and occupational status of Australian engineering bachelor graduates, and how this status varies specifically with graduate age. We consider the implications of these findings and present recommendations for the recruitment and education of Australian engineering undergraduates. We conclude that engineering students would be better informed about, and equipped for, the world of post-graduation work if they were exposed to the likely options for their career trajectory. Likewise, secondary school students and others considering engineering undergraduate study would be more honestly advised if they were informed about the full range of career possibilities for engineering graduates and the probability that they are just as likely to work out of engineering as in it

HKU's double professional civil engineering and law programme
The scale and complexity of civil engineering projects are increasing exponentially. Coupled with the growing trend of globalisation, the demand for high-calibre civil engineers who are also knowledgeable in legal matters is increasing. Driven by an aspiration to prepare civil engineering graduates with a solid foundation in both civil engineering and law, The University of Hong Kong has developed the first 5-year credit-based double professional degree programme in Hong Kong, which leads to the award of the degrees of Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering (Law) and Bachelor of Laws. The considerations, development process and launching details of the programme are presented in this paper. The students admitted to date perform better academically than other civil engineering students on civil engineering courses. However, they do not perform as well as law students and other law-related double-degree students.published_or_final_versio
