Towards Scalable Beaconing in VANETs
Beaconing is envisioned to build a cooperative awareness in future intelligent vehicles, from which many ITS applications can draw their inputs. The problem of scalability has received ample attention over the past years and is primarily approached using power control methods. We reason power control alone will not be sufficient if we are to meet application requirements; the rate at which beacons are generated must also be controlled. Ultimately, adaptive approaches based on actual channel and traffic state can tune MAC and beaconing properties to optimal values in the dynamic VANET environment
End-to-end 5G service deployment and orchestration in optical networks with QoE guarantees

Optical networks control and resource orchestration is set to potentially turn into software-defined approaches in order to address such requirements. As a result, there rises a need for an architectural scheme capable of supporting the different types of services defined for 5G verticals.We present in this paper an architecture enabling end-to-end (E2E) provisioning and monitoring of such 5G services over optical network segments. In particular, the scenario considers the coordination of various optical enabled network segments by a higher level E2E Orchestrator, which provides of network slice deployment and is able to guarantee agreed levels of Quality of Experience (QoE). A Minimal Architecture for General Cognition
A minimalistic cognitive architecture called MANIC is presented. The MANIC
architecture requires only three function approximating models, and one state
machine. Even with so few major components, it is theoretically sufficient to
achieve functional equivalence with all other cognitive architectures, and can
be practically trained. Instead of seeking to transfer architectural
inspiration from biology into artificial intelligence, MANIC seeks to minimize
novelty and follow the most well-established constructs that have evolved
within various sub-fields of data science. From this perspective, MANIC offers
an alternate approach to a long-standing objective of artificial intelligence.

City Data Fusion: Sensor Data Fusion in the Internet of Things
Internet of Things (IoT) has gained substantial attention recently and play a
significant role in smart city application deployments. A number of such smart
city applications depend on sensor fusion capabilities in the cloud from
diverse data sources. We introduce the concept of IoT and present in detail ten
different parameters that govern our sensor data fusion evaluation framework.
We then evaluate the current state-of-the art in sensor data fusion against our
sensor data fusion framework. Our main goal is to examine and survey different
sensor data fusion research efforts based on our evaluation framework. The

Wearable learning tools
In life people must learn whenever and wherever they experience something new. Until recently computing technology could not support such a notion, the constraints of size, power and cost kept computers under the classroom table, in the office or in the home. Recent advances in miniaturization have led to a growing field of research in âwearableâ computing. This paper looks at how such technologies can enhance computerâmediated communications, with a focus upon collaborative working for learning. An experimental system, MetaPark, is discussed, which explores communications, data retrieval and recording, and navigation techniques within and across real and virtual environments. In order to realize the MetaPark concept, an underlying network architecture is described that supports the required communication model between static and mobile users. This infrastructure, the MUON framework, is offered as a solution to provide a seamless service that tracks user location, interfaces to contextual awareness agents, and provides transparent network service switching
An architecture for organisational decision support
The Decision Support (DS) topic of the Network Enabled Capability for Through Life Systems Engineering (NECTISE) project aims to provide organisational through-life decision support for the products and services that BAE Systems deliver. The topic consists of five streams that cover resource capability management, decision management, collaboration, change prediction and integration. A proposed architecture is presented for an Integrated Decision Support Environment (IDSE) that combines the streams to provide a structured approach to addressing a number of issues that have been identified by BAE Systems business units as being relevant to DS: uncertainty and risk, shared situational awareness, types of decision making, decision tempo, triggering of decisions, and support for autonomous decision making. The proposed architecture will identify how either individuals or groups of decision makers (including autonomous agents) would be utilised on the basis of their capability within the requirements of the scenario to collaboratively solve the decision problem. Features of the scenario such as time criticality, required experience level, the need for justification, and conflict management, will be addressed within the architecture to ensure that the most appropriate decision management support (system/naturalistic/hybrid) is provided. In addition to being reliant on a number of human factors issues, the decision making process is also reliant on a number of information issues: overload, consistency, completeness, uncertainty and evolution, which will be discussed within the context of the architecture
Social-aware Forwarding in Opportunistic Wireless Networks: Content Awareness or Obliviousness?
With the current host-based Internet architecture, networking faces
limitations in dynamic scenarios, due mostly to host mobility. The ICN paradigm
mitigates such problems by releasing the need to have an end-to-end transport
session established during the life time of the data transfer. Moreover, the
ICN concept solves the mismatch between the Internet architecture and the way
users would like to use it: currently a user needs to know the topological
location of the hosts involved in the communication when he/she just wants to
get the data, independently of its location. Most of the research efforts aim
to come up with a stable ICN architecture in fixed networks, with few examples
in ad-hoc and vehicular networks. However, the Internet is becoming more
pervasive with powerful personal mobile devices that allow users to form
dynamic networks in which content may be exchanged at all times and with low
cost. Such pervasive wireless networks suffer with different levels of
disruption given user mobility, physical obstacles, lack of cooperation,
intermittent connectivity, among others. This paper discusses the combination
of content knowledge (e.g., type and interested parties) and social awareness
within opportunistic networking as to drive the deployment of ICN solutions in
disruptive networking scenarios. With this goal in mind, we go over few
examples of social-aware content-based opportunistic networking proposals that
consider social awareness to allow content dissemination independently of the
level of network disruption. To show how much content knowledge can improve
social-based solutions, we illustrate by means of simulation some
content-oblivious/oriented proposals in scenarios based on synthetic mobility
