    Visual Programming Paradigm for Organizations in Multi-Agent Systems

    Over the past few years, due to a fast digitalization process, business activities witnessed the adoption of new technologies, such as Multi-Agent Systems, to increase the autonomy of their activities. However, the complexity of these technologies often hinders the capability of domain experts, who do not possess coding skills, to exploit them directly. To take advantage of these individuals' expertise in their field, the idea of a user-friendly and accessible Integrated Development Environment arose. Indeed, efforts have already been made to develop a block-based visual programming language for software agents. Although the latter project represents a huge step forward, it does not provide a solution for addressing complex, real-world use cases where interactions and coordination among single entities are crucial. To address this problem, Multi-Agent Oriented Programming introduces organization as a first-class abstraction for designing and implementing Multi-Agent Systems. Therefore, this thesis aims to provide a solution allowing users to impose an organization on top of the agents easily. Since ease of use and intuitiveness remain the key points for this project, users will be able to define organizations through visual language and an intuitive development environment

    Victims' Access to Justice in Trinidad and Tobago: An exploratory study of experiences and challenges of accessing criminal justice in a post-colonial society

    This thesis investigates victims' access to justice in Trinidad and Tobago, using their own narratives. It seeks to capture how their experiences affected their identities as victims and citizens, alongside their perceptions of legitimacy regarding the criminal justice system. While there have been some reforms in the administration of criminal justice in Trinidad and Tobago, such reforms have not focused on victims' accessibility to the justice system. Using grounded theory methodology, qualitative data was collected through 31 in-depth interviews with victims and victim advocates. The analysis found that victims experienced interpersonal, structural, and systemic barriers at varying levels throughout the criminal justice system, which manifested as institutionalized secondary victimization, silencing and inequality. This thesis argues that such experiences not only served to appropriate conflict but demonstrates that access is often given in a very narrow sense. Furthermore, it shows a failure to encompass access to justice as appropriated conflicts are left to stagnate in the system as there is often very little resolution. Adopting a postcolonial lens to analyse victims' experiences, the analysis identified othering practices that served to institutionalize the vulnerability and powerlessness associated with victim identities. Here, it is argued that these othering practices also affected the rights consciousness of victims, delegitimating their identities as citizens. Moreover, as a result of their experiences, victims had mixed perceptions of the justice system. It is argued that while the system is a legitimate authority victims' endorsement of the system is questionable, therefore victims' experiences suggest that there is a reinforcement of the system's legal hegemony. The findings suggest that within the legal system of Trinidad and Tobago, legacies of colonialism shape the postcolonial present as the psychology and inequalities of the past are present in the interactions and processes of justice. These findings are relevant for policymakers in Trinidad and Tobago and other regions. From this study it is recognized that, to improve access to justice for victims, there needs to be a move towards victim empowerment that promotes resilience and enhances social capital. Going forward it is noted that there is a need for further research

    It had been more than two decades passing by aftermath the devastating Asia’s Financial Crisis in 1997, subsequently followed by Suharto’s step down from his presidential throne which he occupied for more than three decades. The financial turmoil turned to a political disaster furthermore has led to massive looting that severely impacted Indonesians of Chinese descendant, including unresolved mystery of the most atrocious sexual violation against women and covert killings of students and democracy activists in this country. Since then, precisely aftermath May 1998, which publicly known as “Reformasi”1, Indonesia underwent political reform that eventually corresponded positively to its macroeconomic growth. Twenty years later, in 2018, Indonesia captured worldwide attention because it has successfully hosted two internationally renowned events, namely the Asian Games 2018 – the most prestigious sport events in Asia – conducted in Jakarta and Palembang; and the IMF/World Bank Annual Meeting 2018 in Bali. Particularly in the IMF/World Bank Annual Meeting, this event has significantly elevated Indonesia’s credibility and international prestige in the global economic powerplay as one of the nations with promising growth and openness. However, the narrative about poverty and inequality, including increasing racial tension, religious conservatism, and sexual violation against women are superseded by friendly climate for foreign investment and eventually excessive glorification of the nation’s economic growth. By portraying the image of promising new economic power, as rhetorically promised by President Joko Widodo during his presidential terms, Indonesia has swept the growing inequality in this highly stratified society that historically compounded with religious and racial tension under the carpet of digital economy.Arte y Humanidade

    The nature of entrepreneurship for people with learning difficulties: a narrative inquiry

    This thesis considers the nature of entrepreneurship in the lives of people with learning difficulties in the UK using the narratives of experience constructed in collaboration with three disabled entrepreneurs who run their own business. It offers an exploration of self-employment as an alternative route to work and considers the relevance of specialist employment support structures to the development of small business opportunities. Working collaboratively with people who are so often framed as marginalised, the study embraces disability studies and critical pedagogy as its theoretical mooring and weaves together personal experience, practice and scholarship to explore ways in which enterprise becomes a site of resistance to the social, cultural, political and structural barriers faced by many disabled people. The study reveals that although entrepreneurial activity aligns well with wider efforts to create more employment opportunities, employment support is frequently conceptualised, arranged and funded in ways that are incompatible with the broader benefits of pursuing entrepreneurial aspirations beyond the narrow confines of job creation. Furthermore, it proffers a reconceptualization of self-employment that considers the confluence of disability, enterprise and support as a ternary of hope, capable of subverting and disrupting notions of disability, independence and autonomy and replacing them with generosity, reciprocity and humility. Rather than analysing employment education, training and support as an isolated intervention “delivered” to disabled people, the study concludes that, central to the support mechanisms found helpful by people with learning difficulties pursuing their entrepreneurial ideas, it is this ternary of hope that transfers vitality to the communal vision of an alternative future. This thesis notes the significance of self-employment and recommends further reflexive empirical research regarding self-employment for and with people with learning difficulties in the UK

    Optimización del rendimiento y la eficiencia energética en sistemas masivamente paralelos

    RESUMEN Los sistemas heterogéneos son cada vez más relevantes, debido a sus capacidades de rendimiento y eficiencia energética, estando presentes en todo tipo de plataformas de cómputo, desde dispositivos embebidos y servidores, hasta nodos HPC de grandes centros de datos. Su complejidad hace que sean habitualmente usados bajo el paradigma de tareas y el modelo de programación host-device. Esto penaliza fuertemente el aprovechamiento de los aceleradores y el consumo energético del sistema, además de dificultar la adaptación de las aplicaciones. La co-ejecución permite que todos los dispositivos cooperen para computar el mismo problema, consumiendo menos tiempo y energía. No obstante, los programadores deben encargarse de toda la gestión de los dispositivos, la distribución de la carga y la portabilidad del código entre sistemas, complicando notablemente su programación. Esta tesis ofrece contribuciones para mejorar el rendimiento y la eficiencia energética en estos sistemas masivamente paralelos. Se realizan propuestas que abordan objetivos generalmente contrapuestos: se mejora la usabilidad y la programabilidad, a la vez que se garantiza una mayor abstracción y extensibilidad del sistema, y al mismo tiempo se aumenta el rendimiento, la escalabilidad y la eficiencia energética. Para ello, se proponen dos motores de ejecución con enfoques completamente distintos. EngineCL, centrado en OpenCL y con una API de alto nivel, favorece la máxima compatibilidad entre todo tipo de dispositivos y proporciona un sistema modular extensible. Su versatilidad permite adaptarlo a entornos para los que no fue concebido, como aplicaciones con ejecuciones restringidas por tiempo o simuladores HPC de dinámica molecular, como el utilizado en un centro de investigación internacional. Considerando las tendencias industriales y enfatizando la aplicabilidad profesional, CoexecutorRuntime proporciona un sistema flexible centrado en C++/SYCL que dota de soporte a la co-ejecución a la tecnología oneAPI. Este runtime acerca a los programadores al dominio del problema, posibilitando la explotación de estrategias dinámicas adaptativas que mejoran la eficiencia en todo tipo de aplicaciones.ABSTRACT Heterogeneous systems are becoming increasingly relevant, due to their performance and energy efficiency capabilities, being present in all types of computing platforms, from embedded devices and servers to HPC nodes in large data centers. Their complexity implies that they are usually used under the task paradigm and the host-device programming model. This strongly penalizes accelerator utilization and system energy consumption, as well as making it difficult to adapt applications. Co-execution allows all devices to simultaneously compute the same problem, cooperating to consume less time and energy. However, programmers must handle all device management, workload distribution and code portability between systems, significantly complicating their programming. This thesis offers contributions to improve performance and energy efficiency in these massively parallel systems. The proposals address the following generally conflicting objectives: usability and programmability are improved, while ensuring enhanced system abstraction and extensibility, and at the same time performance, scalability and energy efficiency are increased. To achieve this, two runtime systems with completely different approaches are proposed. EngineCL, focused on OpenCL and with a high-level API, provides an extensible modular system and favors maximum compatibility between all types of devices. Its versatility allows it to be adapted to environments for which it was not originally designed, including applications with time-constrained executions or molecular dynamics HPC simulators, such as the one used in an international research center. Considering industrial trends and emphasizing professional applicability, CoexecutorRuntime provides a flexible C++/SYCL-based system that provides co-execution support for oneAPI technology.     Student Migration from Cameroon to China. Government Rhetoric and Student Experiences

    Abstract This study examines China-Cameroon educational cooperation with focus on student migration from Cameroon to China. Student migration is approached from the perspectives of the states and Cameroonian students currently studying in China and those who have graduated and returned to Cameroon. Government rhetoric about student migration is one of the main topics of this thesis. Cameroonian authorities view student mobility to China as a means of ‘learning from China’ in sophisticated domains. This is in line with the Chinese government’s official rhetoric which portrays the training of African students and professionals as a ‘knowledge sharing’ strategy under a ‘Cooperation in Human Resources Development and Education’. It is within this framework that China has stated its commitment to assist Africa in Human Resources Development (HRD). I argue that discourses of ‘knowledge sharing’ and ‘learning from China’ do not translate into reality, due to structural and legal challenges students face during their training in China on the one hand, and the lack of a stringent student migration policy in Cameroon, on the other hand. This dissertation also contributes to the soft power debate. Beyond the official framing of the China-Africa educational cooperation as a measure of developmental support, the Chinese government (like many other countries in the world) unofficially resorts to education as a soft power resource. I engage with this debate using students´ satisfaction with social and academic experiences as the precondition for education to become an effective strategy in China’s soft power or image-branding endeavor. I argue that despite China´s investment in a generous scholarship scheme and favorable student visa policy which have attracted an impressive number of African students and professionals in general, the outcome in terms of soft power is seemingly still limited. Despite their excitement with and praise for the quality of social facilities and the university infrastructure in China, Cameroonian students are dissatisfied with their overall academic and social experiences. Finally, the research endeavor assesses students’ migration motivations and expectations in comparison to that of the states. I argue that the two categories of stakeholders have divergent and contrasting expectations. Whereas the Cameroonian state views student migration as a means of transferring Chinese knowledge and know-how to Cameroon, the majority of the students (be them scholarship holders or self-funded students) do not necessarily prioritize acquiring knowledge and returning to Cameroon. The line between the economic and academic dimensions of their migratory projects is blurred. Enrolling in a Chinese university is not synonymous with having a sustainable academic project for a career prospect. It is rather embedded in a broader migration project of which the ultimate aim is to improve on one’s chances toward financial security and social mobility. Despite their dissatisfaction with the quality of education and social life in China, they appreciate and take advantage of resources and opportunities offered by the local economic environment. Furthermore, the Chinese language skills acquired during their stay in China increase the chances of the returnees in the labor market in Cameroon

    Behavioral Economics & Machine Learning Expanding the Field Through a New Lens

    In this thesis, I investigate central questions in behavioral economics as well as law and economics. I examine well-studied problems through a new methodological lens. The aim is to generate new insights and thus point behavioral scientists to novel analytical tools. To this end, I show how machine learning may be used to build new theories by reducing complexity in experimental economic data. Moreover, I use natural language processing to show how supervised learning can enable the scientific community to expand limited datasets. I also investigate the normative impact of the use of such tools in social science research or decision-making as well as their deficiencies

    Multilevel Approaches to Dealing with the Challenges of Diversity

    In recent years, the role of diversity has become increasingly important and present – both in society and at the workplace. Diversity, that is any attribute that people might use do distinguish between self and others, is a topic that is visible in several areas and that has challenging implications, both for organizations and for society as a whole. It is a multilevel construct that needs a holistic approach - but so far, most of the research on diversity is limited to the team level, without reflecting on implications for other levels and interactions with other levels of diversity. The first objective of this dissertation is to examine whether approaches of organizational diversity research, namely faultlines, are applicable to the societal level and whether they are useful on this level to explain phenomena of societal relevance. Second, we investigate whether diversity trainings on the team-level can help meet these challenges by teaching useful competencies. And third, we explore whether characteristics on the individual level, namely intrapersonal diversity, enable people to overcome the challenges of diversity which will ultimately also contribute to meet the challenges of diversity on the societal level. On the basis of the combination of findings on diversity at three different levels and the introduced multi-level model, new hypotheses at different levels of analyses can be formulated and subsequently tested.:1. General DiscussionDiversität hat in den letzten Jahren zunehmend an Bedeutung und Präsenz gewonnen – sowohl in der Gesellschaft als auch am Arbeitsplatz. Diversität, also jedes Merkmal, das Menschen dazu nutzen können, sich selbst als unterschiedlich von anderen Personen wahrzunehmen, ist in vielen Bereichen sichtbar und stellt sowohl für Organisationen als auch für die Gesellschaft als Ganzes eine große Herausforderung dar. Es ist ein Mehrebenen-Konstrukt, das einen ganzheitlichen Ansatz erfordert – die bisherige Forschung zu Diversität beschränkt sich jedoch größtenteils auf die Gruppenebene, ohne Auswirkungen auf oder Interaktionen mit andere Ebenen von Vielfalt zu berücksichtigen. Das erste Ziel dieser Dissertation ist es zu prüfen, ob Ansätze der organisationalen Diversitätsforschung, namentlich Faultlines, auf die gesellschaftliche Ebene übertragbar sind und ob sie auf dieser Ebene nützlich sind, um gesellschaftlich relevante Phänomene zu erklären. Zweitens untersuchen wir, ob Diversitätstrainings auf Gruppenebene helfen können, diese Herausforderungen zu meistern, indem sie nützliche Kompetenzen vermitteln.
