    Automated License Plate Recognition using Existing University Infrastructure and Different Camera Angles

    Number or license plate recognition has become an essential technology for traffic and security applications. Providing access control at any organization or academic institution improves the level of security. However, providing security personnel to manually control the access of vehicles at an academic institution is costly, time-consuming, and to a limited extent, error prone. This study investigated the use of an automated vehicle tracking system, incorporating experimental computer vision techniques for license plate recognition that runs in real-time to provide access control for vehicles and provide increased security for an academic institution. A vehicle monitoring framework was designed by using various technologies and experimenting with different camera angles. In addition, the effect of environmental changes on the accuracy of the optical character recognition application was assessed. The Design Science Research methodology was followed to develop the vehicle monitoring framework artifact. Image enhancement algorithms were tested, and the most viable options were evaluated and implemented. Optimal operating criteria that were established for the vehicle monitoring framework achieved a 96% success rate. The results indicate that a cost-effective solution could be provided by using an existing camera infrastructure at an academic institution and suitable license plate recognition software technologies, algorithms, and different camera angles

    Deep Learning Based Automatic Vehicle License Plate Recognition System for Enhanced Vehicle Identification

    An innovative Automatic Vehicle License Plate Recognition (AVLPR) system that effectively identifies vehicles using deep learning algorithms. Accurate and real-time license plate identification has grown in importance with the rise in demand for improved security and traffic management.The convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture used in the AVLPR system enables the model to automatically learn and extract discriminative characteristics from photos of license plates. To ensure the system's robustness and adaptability, the dataset utilized for training and validation includes a wide range of license plate designs, fonts, and lighting situations.We incorporate data augmentation approaches to accommodate differences in license plate orientation, scale, and perspective throughout the training process to improve recognition accuracy. Additionally, we use transfer learning to enhance the system's generalization abilities by refining the pre-trained model on a sizable dataset.A trustworthy and effective solution for vehicle identification duties is provided by the Deep Learning-Based Automatic Vehicle License Plate Recognition System. Deep learning approaches are used to guarantee precise and instantaneous recognition, making it suitable for many uses such as law enforcement, parking management, and intelligent transportation systems

    ADD: An Automatic Desensitization Fisheye Dataset for Autonomous Driving

    Autonomous driving systems require many images for analyzing the surrounding environment. However, there is fewer data protection for private information among these captured images, such as pedestrian faces or vehicle license plates, which has become a significant issue. In this paper, in response to the call for data security laws and regulations and based on the advantages of large Field of View(FoV) of the fisheye camera, we build the first Autopilot Desensitization Dataset, called ADD, and formulate the first deep-learning-based image desensitization framework, to promote the study of image desensitization in autonomous driving scenarios. The compiled dataset consists of 650K images, including different face and vehicle license plate information captured by the surround-view fisheye camera. It covers various autonomous driving scenarios, including diverse facial characteristics and license plate colors. Then, we propose an efficient multitask desensitization network called DesCenterNet as a benchmark on the ADD dataset, which can perform face and vehicle license plate detection and desensitization tasks. Based on ADD, we further provide an evaluation criterion for desensitization performance, and extensive comparison experiments have verified the effectiveness and superiority of our method on image desensitization

    Prevention of Unauthorized Transport of Ore in Opencast Mines Using Automatic Number Plate Recognition

    Security in mining is a primary concern, which mainly affects the production cost. An efficiently detecting and deterring theft will maximize the profitability of any mining organization. Many illegal transportation cases were registered in spite of rules imposed by central and state governments under Section 23 (c) of MMDR Act 1957. Use of an automated checkpoint gate based on license plate recognition and biometric fingerprint system for vehicle tracking enhances the security in mines. The method was tested on the number plates with various considerations like clean number plates, clean fingerprints, dusty and faded number plates, dusty fingerprints, and number plates captured by varying distance. By considering all the above conditions the pictures were processed by ANPR and bio-metric fingerprint modules. Vehicle license number plate was captured using a digital camera and the captured RGB image was converted to grayscale image. Thresholding was done to remove unwanted areas from the grayscale image. The characters of the number plate were segmented using Gabor filter. A track-sector matrix was generated by considering the number of pixels in each region and was matched with existing template to identify the character. The fingerprint scans the finger and matches with the template created at the time of fingerprint registration at the machine. The micro-controller accepted the processed output in binary form from ANPR and bio-metric fingerprint system. The micro-controller processed the binary output and the checkpoint gate was closed/open based on the output provided by the microcontroller to motor driver

    Template Neural Particle Optimization For Vehicle License Plate Recognition

    The need for vehicle recognition has emerged from cases such as security, smart toll collections and traffic monitoring systems. This type of applications produces high demands especially on the accuracy of license plate recognition (LPR). The challenge of LPR is to select the best method for recognizing characters. Since the importance of LPR arises over times, there is a need to find the best alternative to overcome the problem. The detection and extraction of license plate is conventionally based on image processing methods. The image processing method in license plate recognition generally comprises of five stages including pre-processing, morphological operation, feature extraction, segmentation and character recognition. Pre-processing is an initial step in image processing to improve image quality for more suitability in visualizing perception or computational processing while filtering is required to solve contrast enhancement, noise suppression, blurry issue and data reduction. Feature extraction is applied to locate accurately the license plate position and segmentation is used to find and segment the isolated characters on the plates, without losing features of the characters. Finally, character recognition determines each character, identity and displays it into machine readable form. This study introduces five methods of character recognition namely template matching (TM), back-propagation neural network (BPNN), Particle Swarm Optimization neural network (PSONN), hybrid of TM with BPNN (TM-BPNN) and hybrid of TM with PSONN (TM-PSONN). PSONN is proposed as an alternative to train feed-forward neural network, while TM-BPNN and TM-PSONN are proposed to produce a better recognition result. The performance evaluation is carried out based on mean squared error, processing time, number of training iteration, correlation value and percentage of accuracy. The performance of the selected methods was analyzed by making use real images of 300 vehicles. The hybrid of TM-BPNN gives the highest recognition result with 94% accuracy, followed by the hybrid of TM-PSONN with 91.3%, TM with 77.3%, BPNN with 61.7% and lastly PSONN with 37.7%

    Enhancing Vehicle Entrance and Parking Management: Deep Learning Solutions for Efficiency and Security

    The auto-management of vehicle entrance and parking in any organization is a complex challenge encompassing record-keeping, efficiency, and security concerns. Manual methods for tracking vehicles and finding parking spaces are slow and a waste of time. To solve the problem of auto management of vehicle entrance and parking, we have utilized state-of-the-art deep learning models and automated the process of vehicle entrance and parking into any organization. To ensure security, our system integrated vehicle detection, license number plate verification, and face detection and recognition models to ensure that the person and vehicle are registered with the organization. We have trained multiple deep-learning models for vehicle detection, license number plate detection, face detection, and recognition, however, the YOLOv8n model outperformed all the other models. Furthermore, License plate recognition is facilitated by Google's Tesseract-OCR Engine. By integrating these technologies, the system offers efficient vehicle detection, precise identification, streamlined record keeping, and optimized parking slot allocation in buildings, thereby enhancing convenience, accuracy, and security.
