On Spectral Properties of Finite Population Processor Shared Queues
We consider sojourn or response times in processor-shared queues that have a
finite population of potential users. Computing the response time of a tagged
customer involves solving a finite system of linear ODEs. Writing the system in
matrix form, we study the eigenvectors and eigenvalues in the limit as the size
of the matrix becomes large. This corresponds to finite population models where
the total population is . Using asymptotic methods we reduce the
eigenvalue problem to that of a standard differential equation, such as the
Hermite equation. The dominant eigenvalue leads to the tail of a customer's
sojourn time distribution.Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures and 5 table
Performance Analysis of Optimal Single Stream Beamforming in MIMO Dual-Hop AF Systems
This paper investigates the performance of optimal single stream beamforming
schemes in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) dual-hop amplify-and-forward
(AF) systems. Assuming channel state information is not available at the source
and relay, the optimal transmit and receive beamforming vectors are computed at
the destination, and the transmit beamforming vector is sent to the transmitter
via a dedicated feedback link. Then, a set of new closed-form expressions for
the statistical properties of the maximum eigenvalue of the resultant channel
is derived, i.e., the cumulative density function (cdf), probability density
function (pdf) and general moments, as well as the first order asymptotic
expansion and asymptotic large dimension approximations. These analytical
expressions are then applied to study three important performance metrics of
the system, i.e., outage probability, average symbol error rate and ergodic
capacity. In addition, more detailed treatments are provided for some important
special cases, e.g., when the number of antennas at one of the nodes is one or
large, simple and insightful expressions for the key parameters such as
diversity order and array gain of the system are derived. With the analytical
results, the joint impact of source, relay and destination antenna numbers on
the system performance is addressed, and the performance of optimal beamforming
schemes and orthogonal space-time block-coding (OSTBC) schemes are compared.
Results reveal that the number of antennas at the relay has a great impact on
how the numbers of antennas at the source and destination contribute to the
system performance, and optimal beamforming not only achieves the same maximum
diversity order as OSTBC, but also provides significant power gains over OSTBC.Comment: to appear in IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications special

Uniform asymptotic approximation of diffusion to a small target: Generalized reaction models
The diffusion of a reactant to a binding target plays a key role in many biological processes. The reaction radius at which the reactant and target may interact is often a small parameter relative to the diameter of the domain in which the reactant diffuses. We develop uniform in time asymptotic expansions in the reaction radius of the full solution to the corresponding diffusion equations for two separate reactant-target interaction mechanisms: the Doi or volume reactivity model and the Smoluchowski-Collins-Kimball partial-absorption surface reactivity model. In the former, the reactant and target react with a fixed probability per unit time when within a specified separation. In the latter, upon reaching a fixed separation, they probabilistically react or the reactant reflects away from the target. Expansions of the solution to each model are constructed by projecting out the contribution of the first eigenvalue and eigenfunction to the solution of the diffusion equation and then developing matched asymptotic expansions in Laplace-transform space. Our approach offers an equivalent, but alternative, method to the pseudopotential approach we previously employed [Isaacson and Newby, Phys. Rev. E 88, 012820 (2013)PLEEE81539-375510.1103/PhysRevE.88.012820] for the simpler Smoluchowski pure-absorption reaction mechanism. We find that the resulting asymptotic expansions of the diffusion equation solutions are identical with the exception of one parameter: the diffusion-limited reaction rates of the Doi and partial-absorption models. This demonstrates that for biological systems in which the reaction radius is a small parameter, properly calibrated Doi and partial-absorption models may be functionally equivalent
Analysis and Design of Multiple-Antenna Cognitive Radios with Multiple Primary User Signals
We consider multiple-antenna signal detection of primary user transmission
signals by a secondary user receiver in cognitive radio networks. The optimal
detector is analyzed for the scenario where the number of primary user signals
is no less than the number of receive antennas at the secondary user. We first
derive exact expressions for the moments of the generalized likelihood ratio
test (GLRT) statistic, yielding approximations for the false alarm and
detection probabilities. We then show that the normalized GLRT statistic
converges in distribution to a Gaussian random variable when the number of
antennas and observations grow large at the same rate. Further, using results
from large random matrix theory, we derive expressions to compute the detection
probability without explicit knowledge of the channel, and then particularize
these expressions for two scenarios of practical interest: 1) a single primary
user sending spatially multiplexed signals, and 2) multiple spatially
distributed primary users. Our analytical results are finally used to obtain
simple design rules for the signal detection threshold.Comment: Revised version (14 pages). Change in titl
Energy Efficiency Analysis of Idealized Coordinated Multi-Point Communication System
Coordinated multi-point (CoMP) architecture has proved to be very effective for improving the user fairness and spectral efficiency of cellular communication system, however, its energy efficiency remains to be evaluated. In this paper, CoMP system is idealized as a distributed antenna system by assuming perfect backhauling and cooperative processing. This simplified model allows us to express the capacity of the idealized CoMP system with a simple and accurate closed-form approximation. In addition, a framework for the energy efficiency analysis of CoMP system is introduced, which includes a power consumption model and an energy efficiency metric, i.e. bit-per-joule capacity. This framework along with our closed-form approximation are utilized for assessing both the channel and bit-per-joule capacities of the idealized CoMP system. Results indicate that multi-base-station cooperation can be energy efficient for cell-edge communication and that the backhauling and cooperative processing power should be kept low. Overall, it has been shown that the potential of improvement of CoMP in terms of bit-per-joule capacity is not as high as in terms of channel capacity due to associated energy cost for cooperative processing and backhauling
On the Sojourn Time Distribution in a Finite Population Markovian Processor Sharing Queue
We consider a finite population processor-sharing (PS) queue, with Markovian
arrivals and an exponential server. Such a queue can model an interactive
computer system consisting of a bank of terminals in series with a central
processing unit (CPU). For systems with a large population and a
commensurately rapid service rate, or infrequent arrivals, we obtain various
asymptotic results. We analyze the conditional sojourn time distribution of a
tagged customer, conditioned on the number of others in the system at the
tagged customer's arrival instant, and also the unconditional distribution. The
asymptotics are obtained by a combination of singular perturbation methods and
spectral methods. We consider several space/time scales and parameter ranges,
which lead to different asymptotic behaviors. We also identify precisely when
the finite population model can be approximated by the standard infinite
population -PS queue.Comment: 60 pages and 3 figure
