Chaldean and Neo-Platonic Theology
In the present paper, the meanings the term “Chaldeans” acquired during the Antiquity and the early Middle Ages are presented, but mainly the role the Chaldean Oracles played inside the movement of Neo-Platonism is emphasized. The stratification of Being according to the theology of the Chaldean Oracles, suggests a reformation of the ancient Chaldean dogmas by the Neo-Platonists. The kernel of this paper is the demonstration of the similarity between the name “En” that the ancient Babylonians used as the first part of many compound words for their gods, with the One (Ἕν=En), the first theological principle in the Neo-Platonic system. Yet, a comparison between the Chaldean theology and the Neo-platonic views on Mysticism and religiosity follows. As it is well known, the later Neo-Platonism will be led to the creation of a way of thought and practice as impacts from the ancient tradition
The Chicago Maqlû Fragment (A 7876)
AbstractThe fragment A 7876 (Oriental Institute, Chicago) occupies a special position among the cuneiform sources of the ritualMaqlû. The six-column tablet, inscribed in the Neo-Assyrian script of the 8th and 7th centuries BC, originally contained the complete text of the series with its nine canonical tablets. Taking into account the relevant duplicate manuscripts the article offers an annotated edition of this fragment and compares its style and format to other “large tablets” (dubgallu) of Babylonian literary texts.</jats:p
Human/Humanity, Consciousness and Universe: Informational Relation
From the perspective of the Informational Model of Consciousness elaborated and reported recently on the basis of the last
discoveries of the quantum mechanics and astrophysics, the meeting horizon between some ancient coherent empirical
models of the humanity and our modern scientific results is analyzed. These results are discussed in terms of information,
as a central axis relating the universe, the human and inter-humanity connections, and consciousness as an informational
tool for the exploration of the reality. Bringing into discussion the relevant recent discoveries of quantum mechanics (Higgs’
boson, disembodiment of information from the physical particles), and matter/information properties near the black holes,
it is reinforced the concept of information as one of the fundamental constituent of matter and of our universe, showing that
information is actually the base fabric of matter structures, living structures and universe. The huge quantity of dynamic
information engaged in the living structures, particularly in the human organism, necessary to maintain the life’s functions
and to allow the adaptation requirements, differentiates the living from non-living entities. It is shown that consciousness,
human and universe cannot be really understood if it is not introduced on the panoramic scene a new player – dark matter,
with more than 20% contribution, besides more than 70% dark energy and only 5% observable matter from the matter total
quantity. It is shown also that the Informational Model of Consciousness, consisting in an architecture of seven cognitive
centers, converges with the ancient models of chakras, of etheric body and aura concepts, with dual Taoist concepts of
universe and human body, contributing with answers to the “mind-body”, “nature or nurture” problems and even to Qualia
“hard” problem, and supporting the Jung’s concepts on the mind. Finally, some questions are addressed to the quantum
mechanics, concerning the retro-causal effect and non-locality principle
'Magic coins' and 'magic squares': the discovery of astrological sigils in the Oldenburg Letters
Enclosed in a 1673 letter to Henry Oldenburg were two drawings of a series of astrological sigils, coins and amulets from the collection of Strasbourg mathematician Julius Reichelt (1637–1719). As portrayals of particular medieval and early modern sigils are relatively rare, this paper will analyse the role of these medals in medieval and early modern medicine, the logic behind their perceived efficacy, and their significance in early modern astrological and cabalistic practice. I shall also demonstrate their change in status in the late seventeenth century from potent magical healing amulets tied to the mysteries of the heavens to objects kept in a cabinet for curiosos. The evolving perception of the purpose of sigils mirrored changing early modern beliefs in the occult influences of the heavens upon the body and the natural world, as well as the growing interests among virtuosi in collecting, numismatics and antiquities
Debunking Ancient Jewish Science
A recently published collection of articles focuses upon a relatively small group of
texts dealing mainly with astronomical calculations and omens as well as physiognomic
omens, attempting to use these as a basis for reconstructing ancient Jewish
science in the Persian and Hellenistic periods. The present review raises questions
regarding the aims and methods employed, offering an alternative suggestion for
the transfer of technical knowledge from Babylonia to ancient Palestine
The polaroid image as photo-object
This article is part of a larger project on the cultural history of Polaroid photography and draws on research done at the Polaroid Corporate archive at Harvard and at the Polaroid company itself. It identifies two cultural practices engendered by Polaroid photography, which, at the point of its extinction, has briefly flared into visibility again. It argues that these practices are mistaken as novel but are in fact rediscoveries of practices that stretch back as many as five decades. The first section identifies Polaroid image-making as a photographic equivalent of what Tom Gunning calls the ‘cinema of attractions’. That is, the emphasis in its use is on the display of photographic technologies rather than the resultant image. Equally, the common practice, in both fine art and vernacular circles, of making composite pictures with Polaroid prints, draws attention from image content and redirects it to the photo as object
