Orations on the victory of the Order of St John over the Turks in 1565 and on the occasion of the laying of the foundation stone of Valletta in 1566
The first Chapter General meeting of the Order of St John held after the victory over the Turks in the Great Siege of 1565, took place on 10 February of the following year. Before dealing with the agenda of the day, orations were delivered. One of these was presented by Augustinian Fr Spiritus Pelo Anguisciola who would yet deliver another oration, a month later, on the occasion of the laying of the foundation stone of Valletta, in March 1566. The text of the latter had been published by Gian Francesco Abela in 1647. The texts of both orations -taken from original manuscripts discovered by the present author -are being reproduced in this paper. The text of the former is being published herein for the first time.peer-reviewe
Three published books of sermons delivered in Malta between 1694 and 1754
The identification of texts of sermons delivered in Malta during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries would make possible a study of the oratorical styles, themes treated, and languages used in their delivery. This, in turn, would enable a better understanding of the impact that such an important albeit ignored means of verbal communication had on its contemporary audience. In the present short study three unrecorded published books containing sermons are described and briefly discussed.peer-reviewe
A small intruder. A Medieval marble winged lion from Ravello
An image of a 12th century marble winged lion was provocatively included among the slides accompanying a lecture by the author at a recent conference at the American Academy in Rome to illustrate Umberto Scerrato’s work on Islamic archaeology and art history in Italy. The lion, in fact, was never published by Scerrato, but it and a winged bull, both once featuring as ornaments on the “Moresque Fountain” in Ravello (originally from a medieval building most likely from Ravello itself), are the subject of this brief article. They are of undeniable Islamic taste
A arte sacra: museus e exposições numa sociedade secularizada
Holy, or sacred, has implicit the concept of separation, which is expressed in the diverse religions. Nevertheless, sacred art, conceived for liturgical or devotional functions, constitutes a substantial component of museum collections, implying its transfer from the sacred sphere to the profane space of the museum. It is therefore required to analyse the concept of sacred in the Christianity context in order to validate the musealisation process. It is also intended to evaluate how the functional, semantic and symbolic content of the religious heritage are communicated by the museum where it is exhibited facing the increasingly secularised society. Inherent in this analysis, it is improved a reflection about the available strategies to recover the implicit meanings of the object and to make the museum and, particularly, the museum of sacred art, a communicative space, in presenting and decoding of the objects in the exhibition
