Cherenkov Telescope Array Data Management
Very High Energy gamma-ray astronomy with the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA)
is evolving towards the model of a public observatory. Handling, processing and
archiving the large amount of data generated by the CTA instruments and
delivering scientific products are some of the challenges in designing the CTA
Data Management. The participation of scientists from within CTA Consortium and
from the greater worldwide scientific community necessitates a sophisticated
scientific analysis system capable of providing unified and efficient user
access to data, software and computing resources. Data Management is designed
to respond to three main issues: (i) the treatment and flow of data from remote
telescopes; (ii) "big-data" archiving and processing; (iii) and open data
access. In this communication the overall technical design of the CTA Data

A Survey on Array Storage, Query Languages, and Systems
Since scientific investigation is one of the most important providers of
massive amounts of ordered data, there is a renewed interest in array data
processing in the context of Big Data. To the best of our knowledge, a unified
resource that summarizes and analyzes array processing research over its long
existence is currently missing. In this survey, we provide a guide for past,
present, and future research in array processing. The survey is organized along
three main topics. Array storage discusses all the aspects related to array
partitioning into chunks. The identification of a reduced set of array
operators to form the foundation for an array query language is analyzed across
multiple such proposals. Lastly, we survey real systems for array processing.
The result is a thorough survey on array data storage and processing that
should be consulted by anyone interested in this research topic, independent of
experience level. The survey is not complete though. We greatly appreciate
pointers towards any work we might have forgotten to mention.Comment: 44 page
Two Dimensional Array Imaging with Beam Steered Data
This paper discusses different approaches used for millimeter wave imaging of
two-dimensional objects. Imaging of a two dimensional object requires reflected
wave data to be collected across two distinct dimensions. In this paper, we
propose a reconstruction method that uses narrowband waveforms along with two
dimensional beam steering. The beam is steered in azimuthal and elevation
direction, which forms the two distinct dimensions required for the
reconstruction. The Reconstruction technique uses inverse Fourier transform
along with amplitude and phase correction factors. In addition, this
reconstruction technique does not require interpolation of the data in either
wavenumber or spatial domain. Use of the two dimensional beam steering offers
better performance in the presence of noise compared with the existing methods,
such as switched array imaging system. Effects of RF impairments such as
quantization of the phase of beam steering weights and timing jitter which add
to phase noise, are analyzed
Programmable quantum gate arrays
We show how to construct quantum gate arrays that can be programmed to
perform different unitary operations on a data register, depending on the input
to some program register. It is shown that a universal quantum gate array - a
gate array which can be programmed to perform any unitary operation - exists
only if one allows the gate array to operate in a probabilistic fashion. The
universal quantum gate array we construct requires an exponentially smaller

First data of the Colombia Lightning Mapping Array - COLMA
The first data set of VHF lightning mapping using a
Lightning Mapping Array system - LMA in a tropical region is
presented in this paper. Six sensors were installed at the north of
Colombia near Santa Marta city. Since the installation of the
LMA network in 2015, up to 7000 intra-cloud (IC) discharges
from September to November 2015 have been analyzed. The data
suggests that, the electrical charge distribution in tropical
thunderstorms shows higher vertical development reaching

Status and Plans for the Array Control and Data Acquisition System of the Cherenkov Telescope Array
The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next-generation atmospheric
Cherenkov gamma-ray observatory. CTA will consist of two installations, one in
the northern, and the other in the southern hemisphere, containing tens of
telescopes of different sizes. The CTA performance requirements and the
inherent complexity associated with the operation, control and monitoring of
such a large distributed multi-telescope array leads to new challenges in the
field of the gamma-ray astronomy. The ACTL (array control and data acquisition)
system will consist of the hardware and software that is necessary to control
and monitor the CTA arrays, as well as to time-stamp, read-out, filter and
store -at aggregated rates of few GB/s- the scientific data. The ACTL system
must be flexible enough to permit the simultaneous automatic operation of
multiple sub-arrays of telescopes with a minimum personnel effort on site. One
of the challenges of the system is to provide a reliable integration of the
control of a large and heterogeneous set of devices. Moreover, the system is
required to be ready to adapt the observation schedule, on timescales of a few
tens of seconds, to account for changing environmental conditions or to
prioritize incoming scientific alerts from time-critical transient phenomena
such as gamma ray bursts. This contribution provides a summary of the main
