A perception and manipulation system for collecting rock samples

    Get PDF
An important part of a planetary exploration mission is to collect and analyze surface samples. As part of the Carnegie Mellon University Ambler Project, researchers are investigating techniques for collecting samples using a robot arm and a range sensor. The aim of this work is to make the sample collection operation fully autonomous. Described here are the components of the experimental system, including a perception module that extracts objects of interest from range images and produces models of their shapes, and a manipulation module that enables the system to pick up the objects identified by the perception module. The system was tested on a small testbed using natural terrain

Embedded Implicit Stand-ins for Animated Meshes: a Case of Hybrid Modelling

    Get PDF
In this paper we address shape modelling problems, encountered in computer animation and computer games development that are difficult to solve just using polygonal meshes. Our approach is based on a hybrid modelling concept that combines polygonal meshes with implicit surfaces. A hybrid model consists of an animated polygonal mesh and an approximation of this mesh by a convolution surface stand-in that is embedded within it or is attached to it. The motions of both objects are synchronised using a rigging skeleton. This approach is used to model the interaction between an animated mesh object and a viscoelastic substance, normally modelled in implicit form. The adhesive behaviour of the viscous object is modelled using geometric blending operations on the corresponding implicit surfaces. Another application of this approach is the creation of metamorphosing implicit surface parts that are attached to an animated mesh. A prototype implementation of the proposed approach and several examples of modelling and animation with near real-time preview times are presented

Finite Element Analysis for Linear Elastic Solids Based on Subdivision Schemes

    Get PDF
Finite element methods are used in various areas ranging from mechanical engineering to computer graphics and bio-medical applications. In engineering, a critical point is the gap between CAD and CAE. This gap results from different representations used for geometric design and physical simulation. We present two different approaches for using subdivision solids as the only representation for modeling, simulation and visualization. This has the advantage that no data must be converted between the CAD and CAE phases. The first approach is based on an adaptive and feature-preserving tetrahedral subdivision scheme. The second approach is based on Catmull-Clark subdivision solids

Improved Collision Detection and Response Techniques for Cloth Animation

    Get PDF
In the animation of deformable objects, collision detection and response are crucial for the performance. Contrary to volumetric bodies, the accuracy requirements for the collision treatment of textiles are particularly strict because any overlapping is visible. Therefore, we apply methods specifically designed for deformable surfaces that speed up the collision detection. In this paper the efficiency of bounding volume hierarchies is improved by adapted techniques for building and traversing these hierarchies. An extended set of heuristics is described that allows to prune the hierarchy. Oriented inflation of bounding volumes enables us to detect proximities with a minimum of extra cost. Eventually, the distance of the mesh faces is computed accurately, and constraints respond to the collisions

Interactive 3D Visualization of Architectural models might be the best way to get some idea about an Architecture Plan. Photo-realistic visualization often attracts the investors and customers for whom the architectural blueprints are obscure. Architectural Visualization is considered to have a bright future ahead of it as more and more architects and real estate developers are using this technology. Virtual Walk-through can give not only ideas about your building but its interiors and design too. The Architectural Virtual Environment also most widely used in Gaming and Entertainment Industry in creating a complex movie scenes or a game environment
