Configuration of Distributed Message Converter Systems using Performance Modeling
To find a configuration of a distributed system satisfying performance goals is a complex search problem that involves many design parameters, like hardware selection, job distribution and process configuration. Performance models are a powerful tools to analyse potential system configurations, however, their evaluation is expensive, such that only a limited number of possible configurations can be evaluated. In this paper we present a systematic method to find a satisfactory configuration with feasible effort, based on a two-step approach. First, using performance estimates a hardware configuration is determined and then the software configuration is incrementally optimized evaluating Layered Queueing Network models. We applied this method to the design of performant EDI converter systems in the financial domain, where increasing message volumes need to be handled due to the increasing importance of B2B interaction
Activity recognition from videos with parallel hypergraph matching on GPUs
In this paper, we propose a method for activity recognition from videos based
on sparse local features and hypergraph matching. We benefit from special
properties of the temporal domain in the data to derive a sequential and fast
graph matching algorithm for GPUs.
Traditionally, graphs and hypergraphs are frequently used to recognize
complex and often non-rigid patterns in computer vision, either through graph
matching or point-set matching with graphs. Most formulations resort to the
minimization of a difficult discrete energy function mixing geometric or
structural terms with data attached terms involving appearance features.
Traditional methods solve this minimization problem approximately, for instance
with spectral techniques.
In this work, instead of solving the problem approximatively, the exact
solution for the optimal assignment is calculated in parallel on GPUs. The
graphical structure is simplified and regularized, which allows to derive an
efficient recursive minimization algorithm. The algorithm distributes
subproblems over the calculation units of a GPU, which solves them in parallel,
allowing the system to run faster than real-time on medium-end GPUs
Query-Driven Sampling for Collective Entity Resolution
Probabilistic databases play a preeminent role in the processing and
management of uncertain data. Recently, many database research efforts have
integrated probabilistic models into databases to support tasks such as
information extraction and labeling. Many of these efforts are based on batch
oriented inference which inhibits a realtime workflow. One important task is
entity resolution (ER). ER is the process of determining records (mentions) in
a database that correspond to the same real-world entity. Traditional pairwise
ER methods can lead to inconsistencies and low accuracy due to localized
decisions. Leading ER systems solve this problem by collectively resolving all
records using a probabilistic graphical model and Markov chain Monte Carlo
(MCMC) inference. However, for large datasets this is an extremely expensive
process. One key observation is that, such exhaustive ER process incurs a huge
up-front cost, which is wasteful in practice because most users are interested
in only a small subset of entities. In this paper, we advocate pay-as-you-go
entity resolution by developing a number of query-driven collective ER
techniques. We introduce two classes of SQL queries that involve ER operators
--- selection-driven ER and join-driven ER. We implement novel variations of
the MCMC Metropolis Hastings algorithm to generate biased samples and
selectivity-based scheduling algorithms to support the two classes of ER
queries. Finally, we show that query-driven ER algorithms can converge and
return results within minutes over a database populated with the extraction
from a newswire dataset containing 71 million mentions
Modeling Scalability of Distributed Machine Learning
Present day machine learning is computationally intensive and processes large
amounts of data. It is implemented in a distributed fashion in order to address
these scalability issues. The work is parallelized across a number of computing
nodes. It is usually hard to estimate in advance how many nodes to use for a
particular workload. We propose a simple framework for estimating the
scalability of distributed machine learning algorithms. We measure the
scalability by means of the speedup an algorithm achieves with more nodes. We
propose time complexity models for gradient descent and graphical model
inference. We validate our models with experiments on deep learning training
and belief propagation. This framework was used to study the scalability of

Scalable Facility Location for Massive Graphs on Pregel-like Systems
We propose a new scalable algorithm for facility location. Facility location
is a classic problem, where the goal is to select a subset of facilities to
open, from a set of candidate facilities F , in order to serve a set of clients
C. The objective is to minimize the total cost of opening facilities plus the
cost of serving each client from the facility it is assigned to. In this work,
we are interested in the graph setting, where the cost of serving a client from
a facility is represented by the shortest-path distance on the graph. This
setting allows to model natural problems arising in the Web and in social media
applications. It also allows to leverage the inherent sparsity of such graphs,
as the input is much smaller than the full pairwise distances between all
vertices.
To obtain truly scalable performance, we design a parallel algorithm that
operates on clusters of shared-nothing machines. In particular, we target
modern Pregel-like architectures, and we implement our algorithm on Apache
Giraph. Our solution makes use of a recent result to build sketches for massive
graphs, and of a fast parallel algorithm to find maximal independent sets, as
building blocks. In so doing, we show how these problems can be solved on a
Pregel-like architecture, and we investigate the properties of these
algorithms. Extensive experimental results show that our algorithm scales
gracefully to graphs with billions of edges, while obtaining values of the
objective function that are competitive with a state-of-the-art sequential
algorithm
