    Integrated Robust Optimal Design (IROD) via sensitivity minimization

    A novel Integrated Robust Optimal Design (IROD) methodology is presented in this work which combines a traditional sensitivity theory with relatively new dvancements in Bilinear Matrix Inequality (BMI) constrained optimization problems. IROD provides the least conservative approach for robust control synthesis. The proposed methodology is demonstrated using numerical examples of integrated control-structure design problem for combine harvester header and excavator linkages. The IROD methodology is compared with the state of the art sequential design method using the two application examples, and the results show that the proposed methodology provides a viable alternative for robust controller synthesis and often times offers even a better performance than competing methods. Although this method requires linearization of nonlinear system at each system parameter optimization step, a technique to linearized Differential Algebraic Equations (DAE) is presented which allows use of symbolic approach for linearization. This technique avoids repetitive linearizations. For the nonlinear systems with parametric uncertainties which can not be linearized at operating points, a new methodology is proposed for robust feedback linearization using sensitivity dynamics-based formulation. The feedback linearization approach is used for systems with augmented sensitivity dynamics and used to refine control input to improve robustness. The method is demonstrated using an example of a position tracking control of a hydraulic actuator. The robustness of controller design is demonstrated by considering variations in fluid density parameter. The results show that the proposed methodology improves robustness of the feedback linearization to parametric variations

    Shared Control Policies and Task Learning for Hydraulic Earth-Moving Machinery

    This thesis develops a shared control design framework for improving operator efficiency and performance on hydraulic excavation tasks. The framework is based on blended shared control (BSC), a technique whereby the operator’s command input is continually augmented by an assistive controller. Designing a BSC control scheme is subdivided here into four key components. Task learning utilizes nonparametric inverse reinforcement learning to identify the underlying goal structure of a task as a sequence of subgoals directly from the demonstration data of an experienced operator. These subgoals may be distinct points in the actuator space or distributions overthe space, from which the operator draws a subgoal location during the task. The remaining three steps are executed on-line during each update of the BSC controller. In real-time, the subgoal prediction step involves utilizing the subgoal decomposition from the learning process in order to predict the current subgoal of the operator. Novel deterministic and probabilistic prediction methods are developed and evaluated for their ease of implementation and performance against manually labeled trial data. The control generation component involves computing polynomial trajectories to the predicted subgoal location or mean of the subgoal distribution, and computing a control input which tracks those trajectories. Finally, the blending law synthesizes both inputs through a weighted averaging of the human and control input, using a blending parameter which can be static or dynamic. In the latter case, mapping probabilistic quantities such as the maximum a posteriori probability or statistical entropy to the value of the dynamic blending parameter may yield a more intelligent control assistance, scaling the intervention according to the confidence of the prediction. A reduced-scale (1/12) fully hydraulic excavator model was instrumented for BSC experimentation, equipped with absolute position feedback of each hydraulic actuator. Experiments were conducted using a standard operator control interface and a common earthmoving task: loading a truck from a pile. Under BSC, operators experienced an 18% improvement in mean digging efficiency, defined as mass of material moved per cycle time. Effects of BSC vary with regard to pure cycle time, although most operators experienced a reduced mean cycle time

    We are pleased to present the conference proceedings for the 12th edition of the International Fluid Power Conference (IFK). The IFK is one of the world’s most significant scientific conferences on fluid power control technology and systems. It offers a common platform for the presentation and discussion of trends and innovations to manufacturers, users and scientists. The Chair of Fluid-Mechatronic Systems at the TU Dresden is organizing and hosting the IFK for the sixth time. Supporting hosts are the Fluid Power Association of the German Engineering Federation (VDMA), Dresdner Verein zur Förderung der Fluidtechnik e. V. (DVF) and GWT-TUD GmbH. The organization and the conference location alternates every two years between the Chair of Fluid-Mechatronic Systems in Dresden and the Institute for Fluid Power Drives and Systems in Aachen. The symposium on the first day is dedicated to presentations focused on methodology and fundamental research. The two following conference days offer a wide variety of application and technology orientated papers about the latest state of the art in fluid power. It is this combination that makes the IFK a unique and excellent forum for the exchange of academic research and industrial application experience. A simultaneously ongoing exhibition offers the possibility to get product information and to have individual talks with manufacturers. The theme of the 12th IFK is “Fluid Power – Future Technology”, covering topics that enable the development of 5G-ready, cost-efficient and demand-driven structures, as well as individual decentralized drives. Another topic is the real-time data exchange that allows the application of numerous predictive maintenance strategies, which will significantly increase the availability of fluid power systems and their elements and ensure their improved lifetime performance. We create an atmosphere for casual exchange by offering a vast frame and cultural program.     Performance comparison of structured H∞ based looptune and LQR for a 4-DOF robotic manipulator

    We explore looptune, a MATLAB-based structured H1 synthesis technique in the context of robotics. Position control of a 4 Degree of Freedom (DOF) serial robotic manipulator developed using Simulink is the problem under consideration. Three full state feedback control systems were developed, analyzed and compared for both steady-state and transient performance using the Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) and looptune. Initially, a single gain feedback controller was synthesized using LQR. This system was then modified by augmenting the state feedback controller with Proportional Integral (PI) and Integral regulators, thereby creating a second and third control system respectively. In both the second and third control systems, the LQR synthesized gain and additional gains were further tuned using looptune to achieve improvement in performance. The second and third systems were also compared in terms of tracking a time-dependent trajectory. Finally, the LQR and looptune synthesized controllers were tested for robustness by simultaneously increasing the mass of each manipulator link. In comparison to LQR, the second system consisting of Single Input Single Output (SISO) PI controllers and the state feedback matrix succeeded in meeting the control objectives in terms of performance, optimality, trajectory tracking, and robustness. The third system did not improve performance in contrast to LQR, but still showed robustness under mass variation. In conclusion, our results have shown looptune to have a comparatively better performance over LQR thereby highlighting its promising potential for future emerging control system applications

    Dynamic neural network-based feedback linearization of electrohydraulic suspension systems

    Resolving the trade-offs between suspension travel, ride comfort, road holding, vehicle handling and power consumptions is the primary challenge in designing Active-Vehicle-Suspension-Systems (AVSS). Controller tuning with global optimization techniques is proposed to realise the best compromise between these con icting criteria. Optimization methods adapted include Controlled-Random-Search (CRS), Differential-Evolution (DE), Genetic-Algorithm (GA), Particle-Swarm-Optimization (PSO) and Pattern-Search (PS). Quarter-car and full-car nonlinear AVSS models that incorporate electrohydraulic actuator dynamics are designed. Two control schemes are proposed for this investigation. The first is the conventional Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control, which is applied in a multi-loop architecture to stabilise the actuator and manipulate the primary control variables. Global optimization-based tuning achieved enhanced responses in each aspect of PID-based AVSS performance and a better resolve in con icting criteria, with DE performing the best. The full-car PID-based AVSS was analysed for DE as well as modi ed variants of the PSO and CRS. These modified methods surpassed its predecessors with a better performance index and this was anticipated as they were augmented to permit for e cient exploration of the search space with enhanced exibility in the algorithms. However, DE still maintained the best outcome in this aspect. The second method is indirect adaptive dynamic-neural-network-based-feedback-linearization (DNNFBL), where neural networks were trained with optimization algorithms and later feedback linearization control was applied to it. PSO generated the most desirable results, followed by DE. The remaining approaches exhibited signi cantly weaker results for this control method. Such outcomes were accredited to the nature of the DE and PSO algorithms and their superior search characteristics as well as the nature of the problem, which now had more variables. The adaptive nature and ability to cancel system nonlinearities saw the full-car PSO-based DNNFBL controller outperform its PID counterpart. It achieved a better resolve between performance criteria, minimal chatter, superior parameter sensitivity, and improved suspension travel, roll acceleration and control force response
