    An Integrated Big and Fast Data Analytics Platform for Smart Urban Transportation Management

It strongly relies on the information collected into multiple, widespread, and heterogeneous data sources as well as on the ability to extract actionable insights from them. Besides data, full stack (from platform to services and applications) Information and Communications Technology (ICT) solutions need to be specifically adopted to address smart cities challenges. Smart urban transportation management is one of the key use cases addressed in the context of the EUBra-BIGSEA (Europe-Brazil Collaboration of Big Data Scientific Research through Cloud-Centric Applications) project. This paper specifically focuses on the City Administration Dashboard, a public transport analytics application that has been developed on top of the EUBra-BIGSEA platform and used by the Municipality stakeholders of Curitiba, Brazil, to tackle urban traffic data analysis and planning challenges. The solution proposed in this paper joins together a scalable big and fast data analytics platform, a flexible and dynamic cloud infrastructure, data quality and entity matching algorithms as well as security and privacy techniques.     Building a FIWARE Smart City Platform

    This paper describes the architecture of a comprehensive IoT solution entirely based on the FIWARE platform. The application is designed to record data from environmental sensors and to eventually visualize them on a Smart City Dashboard. Besides solving certain architectural and technical issues, one particular challenge arose from the fact that some of the sensors were assumed to be mounted on public transportation vehicles like buses and trams. It could be shown that the FIWARE platform provides a range of components that allows for building such an IoT platform in a very efficient way

    Measuring Developer Experience of a Digital Platform

    Smart city and smart transportation are concepts that have emerged as an enabling solution which facilitates the grassroots social innovations to mitigate the problems generated by rapid urbanization and population growth. The digital service platform has fostered a new paradigm of transportation by involving all key players to create a novel environment. It is concerned developer are also the user of the platform as they are using the system development tools and methods for further development, that is why developer experience over the platform plays a vital role. Delightful developer experience not only improving the platform performance but also invokes to introduce new innovations. In this research we off to measure developer experience and answering the research questions “how to measure developer experience on top of the digital service platform” and “how to analyse the developer experience”. In the state of measuring developer experience, an application has been developed over the digital service platform and a measurement procedure has been introduced by modifying System Usability Scale (SUS) to more suit the context of the developer. The SUS has been borrowed from UX measurement tools as developers are the user of system, system development tools and methods as well as SUS is a widely accepted tool by the usability researchers for measuring usability. The result of the proposed method showed superior experience from the developer’s perspective to develop the application over the living lab bus platform. The result is almost same when it is compared with another method, but it is arguable as it showed small discrepancy. Furthermore, it can be said that, this research provides a straight forward way to measure developer experience on a digital service platform. The answer of the research questions provides a detail guideline of the measurement process and analysing criteria of developer experience. Moreover, it comes out with few recommendations that can be helpful for the developers of the platform to improve the platform in future, so that it could ensure the delightful experience for the developers

    Developing a Mobile Application for a Taxi Service Company in Nigeria

    Transportation is an issue of concern in big cities of many developing countries today. Due to the large population in these cities, there is constant traffic congestion and pollution. As a result taxi services are common. In Nigeria, companies offering these services have discovered that they can better serve the large population by providing their services through the mobile platform. Given the wide spread adoption of smart phones in these regions, we designed, developed and deployed an Android- based application for one of the taxi service company called Red Cab. The application makes it easier for Red Cab to cater for its current customers and also reach out to newer ones

    MobilitApp: Analysing mobility data of citizens in the metropolitan area of Barcelona

    MobilitApp is a platform designed to provide smart mobility services in urban areas. It is designed to help citizens and transport authorities alike. Citizens will be able to access the MobilitApp mobile application and decide their optimal transportation strategy by visualising their usual routes, their carbon footprint, receiving tips, analytics and general mobility information, such as traffic and incident alerts. Transport authorities and service providers will be able to access information about the mobility pattern of citizens to o er their best services, improve costs and planning. The MobilitApp client runs on Android devices and records synchronously, while running in the background, periodic location updates from its users. The information obtained is processed and analysed to understand the mobility patterns of our users in the city of Barcelona, Spain

    IoT Architecture for a sustainable tourism application in a smart city environment

    In the past few years, the Smart Cities concept has become one of the main driving forces for the urban transition towards a low carbon environment, sustainable economy, andmobility. Tourism, as one of the fastest growing industries, is also an important generator of carbon emissions; therefore, the recently emerging sustainable tourism concept is envisioned as an important part of the Smart Cities paradigm.Within this context, the Internet-of-Things (IoT) concept is the key technological point for the development of smart urban environments through the use of aggregated data, integrated in a single decisional platform. This paper performs the first analysis on the feasibility of the use of an IoT approach and proposes a specific architecture for a sustainable tourism application. The architecture is tailored for the optimisation of the movement of cruise ship tourists in the city of Cagliari (Italy), by taking into consideration factors such as transport information and queue waiting times. A first set of simulations is performed using 67-point of interest, real transportation data, and an optimisation algorithm

    Recent advances in industrial wireless sensor networks towards efficient management in IoT

    With the accelerated development of Internet-of- Things (IoT), wireless sensor networks (WSN) are gaining importance in the continued advancement of information and communication technologies, and have been connected and integrated with Internet in vast industrial applications. However, given the fact that most wireless sensor devices are resource constrained and operate on batteries, the communication overhead and power consumption are therefore important issues for wireless sensor networks design. In order to efficiently manage these wireless sensor devices in a unified manner, the industrial authorities should be able to provide a network infrastructure supporting various WSN applications and services that facilitate the management of sensor-equipped real-world entities. This paper presents an overview of industrial ecosystem, technical architecture, industrial device management standards and our latest research activity in developing a WSN management system. The key approach to enable efficient and reliable management of WSN within such an infrastructure is a cross layer design of lightweight and cloud-based RESTful web service

The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.The safety, mobility, environmental and economic benefits of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) are potentially dramatic. However, realization of these benefits largely hinges on the timely upgrading of the existing transportation system. CAVs must be enabled to send and receive data to and from other vehicles and drivers (V2V communication) and to and from infrastructure (V2I communication). Further, infrastructure and the transportation agencies that manage it must be able to collect, process, distribute and archive these data quickly, reliably, and securely. This paper focuses on current digital roadway infrastructure initiatives and highlights the importance of including digital infrastructure investment alongside more traditional infrastructure investment to keep up with the auto industry's push towards this real time communication and data processing capability. Agencies responsible for transportation infrastructure construction and management must collaborate, establishing national and international platforms to guide the planning, deployment and management of digital infrastructure in their jurisdictions. This will help create standardized interoperable national and international systems so that CAV technology is not deployed in a haphazard and uncoordinated manner
