Anglicism and taboo: axiological values of the pure Anglicism

La influencia del inglés en la lengua española en el ámbito del erotismo y la sexualidad ha dado lugar a un número considerable de anglicismos crudos para la designación de conceptos de la esfera sexual. Es el propósito de este trabajo examinar los valores axiológicos que el anglicismo presenta en el vocabulario sexual en el español europeo. Para ello, analizaremos los valores eufemísticos, disfemísticos y cuasieufemísticos que el anglicismo de naturaleza sexual presenta en un corpus léxico de anglicismos crudos extraídos del Diccionario gay-lésbico (2008) y del Diccionario del sexo y el erotismo (2011). El análisis realizado demuestra que las voces anglicadas utilizadas en la esfera sexual no sólo buscan atenuar los tabúes lingüísticos, sino que también se usan para ofender y degradar e incluso para que un grupo social monopolice una serie de voces alusivas a conceptos vitandos.The influence of English on Spanish within the field of eroticism and sexuality has led to a considerable number of pure anglicisms to designate sex-related concepts. In this regard, it is the aim of this paper to examine the axiological values that anglicisms present in Spanish sexual vocabulary. To this end, we will explore the euphemistic, dysphemistic and quasieuphemistic values that sex-related anglicisms present in a corpus of pure anglicisms excerpted from two dictionaries: Diccionario gay-lésbico (2008) and Diccionario del sexo y el erotismo (2011). Analysis of the presence of Anglicisms in a Spanish internet forum: some terms from the fields of fashion, beauty and leisure

The pervasive presence of English in Spain is unquestionable; indeed, a vast volume of literature has provided evidence of this fact. In this article, the remarkable presence of Anglicisms in a particular type of social media will be examined, namely the Spanish Internet forum enfemenino. The analysis covers three specific domains: beauty, fashion and leisure. The study focuses on a sample of English borrowings used in news articles published in this forum over the last 2 years (from January 2015 to March 2017). The findings reveal an increasing use of pure Anglicisms in the forum, whereas adapted Anglicisms, along with pseudo-Anglicisms, are not so common. These Anglicisms seem to be used for different reasons: the values of modernity and prestige associated with English, the lack of Spanish equivalents in some cases, the emergence of new concepts and innovations and, last but not least, the increasing influence that the Anglo-American culture is exerting on Spain. This raises the question of the extent to which these factors affect our sense of identity in Spain

The influence of English on Spanish fashion terminology: -ing forms

As has been the case with other European languages, Spanish has welcomed the arrival of English words, in spite of all purist efforts to the contrary. Moreover, it has not only adopted and adapted true Anglicisms but it has also created other forms based on English patterns, such mechanisms particularly visible in the fashion jargon in Spanish. In this paper we focus on -ing forms in the Spanish language of fashion, which may at times be genuine Anglicisms (formal or semantic ones) or false Anglicisms (analogical creations, that is, English-looking lexical elements), found in Spanish editions of fashion magazines such as Vogue, Elle, InStyle, Grazia, Glamour, and Cosmopolitan. The main aim of this study is to qualitatively analyse and classify -ing Anglicisms and false Anglicisms in the aforementioned jargon in order to establish whether the impact of English in the Spanish fashion jargon is so important as to replace native words and expressions

Английские заимствования в русском языке на рубеже ХХ-ХХІ веков

У статті висвітлюється проблема англійських запозичень у російській мові на межі ХХ і ХХІ століть. Мета статті полягає у тематичній класифікації англійських запозичень вказаного періоду, оскільки саме у цей час спостерігається найбільш активне входження запозичених слів у російську мову. Завданнями дослідження є такі: зробити огляд основних сучасних наукових підходів до вивчення проблеми, проаналізувати різні типи англійських запозичень у російській мові на матеріалі лексикографічних джерел і сформувати тематичну класифікацію англійських запозичень. У роботі здійснюється опис сучасних підходів до розгляду проблеми запозичень у російську мову. Новизною дослідження є тематичний підхід до класифікації англійських запозичень на межі ХХІ століття. Статтю проілюстровано численними прикладами з електронних і друкованих джерел. Матеріал аналізу включає в себе близько 300 слів, які попередньо розподілені на двадцять п'ять тематичних груп. Спираючись на результати дослідження автори зазначають, що існує обмежене число “англіцизмів”, пов'язаних з конкретними типами діяльності людини як в Англії, так і в Росії. У статті також зазначається, що поява словників “англіцизмів” є кращим доказом того факту, що саме англійська мова виступає у якості донора російської. Автори приходять до висновку, що визначений у роботі тематичний підхід до вивчення проблеми англійських запозичень у російській мові може бути початковим етапом для подальшого розгляду мовних контактів у цілому, за умови збільшення і урізноманітнення матеріалу дослідження.The article is concerned with the problem of English borrowings in the Russian language at the end of the 20th century and at the very beginning of the 21st century. The purpose of this paper is to give thematic classification of the borrowings. The tasks of the investigation are to outline the main scientific approaches to the problem, to analyse different types of English borrowings in the Russian language in lexicographical sources and to form the thematic classification of English borrowings. The article introduces the main scientific works on the aforementioned problem. The novelty of the investigation is the thematic approach to the classification of English borrowings around the turn of the 21th century. The paper is illustrated by multiple examples from the online sources and paper dictionaries. The material of the analysis includes about 300 words, which are divided to the twenty-five thematic groups. In accordance with the results of the investigation it is noted that there is a limited number of “anglicisms” linked with specific human activities both in England and in Russia. It is also considered that the appearance of the dictionaries of “anglicisms” is the best proof of the function of English as a donor-language. The authors conclude that the basic approach to the problem of the paper can be an initial stage for further, more sophisticated and scientifically more elaborate studies of language contacts in general.В статье рассматривается проблема английских заимствований в русском языке на рубеже XX и XXI веков. Цель статьи заключается в тематической классификации английских заимствований этого периода. Задачами исследования являются: обзор основных современных научных подходов к изучению проблемы, анализ различных типов английских заимствований в русском языке на материале лексикографических источников и формирование тематической классификации английских заимствований. В работе осуществляется описание современных подходов к рассмотрению проблемы заимствований в русском языке. Новизной исследования является тематический подход к классификации английских заимствований на рубеже XX и XXI веков. Статья проиллюстрирована многочисленными примерами из электронных и печатных источников. Материал анализа включает в себя около 300 слов, которые предварительно распределены на двадцать пять тематических групп. Опираясь на результаты исследования, авторы отмечают, что существует ограниченное число “англицизмов”, связанных с конкретными типами деятельности человека. В статье также отмечается, что появление словарей “англицизмов” является одним из доказательств того факта, что именно английский язык выступает в качестве донора русского. Авторы приходят к выводу, что определенный в работе тематический подход к изучению проблемы английских заимствований в русском языке может стать начальным этапом для дальнейшего рассмотрения языковых контактов в целом, при условии большего разнообразия материала исследования

Present-day Spanish fashion lexicon dresses up in English

Lexical borrowings can be regarded as one of the clearest and most direct consequences of any language contact situation. However, not all the borrowings that enter a language are alike. Since their entrance in a given language is motivated by different reasons, two general kinds of borrowings must be distinguished: necessary borrowings which name ideas and concepts for which the recipient language does not have any equivalent term; and superfluous borrowings which, on the contrary, refer to realities for which the recipient language already has equivalent terms. This paper focuses on the latter type. Specifically, it presents a diachronic corpus-based analysis of 14 English fashion terms with a clear Spanish lexical counterpart —blazer/‘chaqueta’, celebrity/‘famoso’, clutch/‘bolso de mano’, cool/‘de moda’, fashion/‘moda’, fashionable/‘de moda’, fashionista/ ‘adicto a la moda’, jeans/‘vaqueros’, nude/‘color carne’, photocall/‘sesión de fotos’, shorts/‘pantalones cortos’, sporty/‘deportivo’, trench/‘trinchera, gabardina’, and trendy/‘moderno’— in four Spanish corpora: the Corpus del Español, and the CORDE, CREA and CORPES XXI corpora. My objectives are twofold: firstly, to demonstrate to what extent these unnecessary Anglicisms are increasingly becoming part of the everyday contemporary Peninsular Spanish fashion lexicon; and secondly, to account for the three reasons that underlie their alleged constant entrance in twenty-first century Peninsular Spanish: (i) globalization and the impact of English on Spanish; (ii) the highly visible presence of English in the field of advertising; (iii) and the selling power of English

From sport to deporte: a discussion etymological, semantic and conceptual in the spanish laguage

En la lengua castellana la palabra deporte, plantea de entrada una triple discusión: de carácter etimológico, semántico y conceptual. Este es el objeto de estudio de este artículo analizar los precedentes históricos de la palabra deporte y trazar su evolución hasta desembocar en el término actual, desde este enfoque trinitario. Para ello nos basamos en la recuperación de fuentes documentales originales, algunas de ellas inéditas y otras poco conocidas o consideradas, que nos permitan adquirir nuevos conocimientos y nos obligan a reinterpretar y corregir algunas afirmaciones actuales.In Spanish, the word deporte (sport) raises a debate that is three-fold: etymological, semantic and conceptual. The study object of this article is to analize the historical precedents of the word deporte and to trace its evolution up to the present day term, from this trinitarian approach. For this purpose, we based our work on recovering original documentary sources, some of which were unpublished, other were little known or rarely considered.
