Tumors of the Foot and Ankle: A Single-institution Experience
Tumors of the foot and ankle are rare, and the particular clinicopathologic features, therapeutic approach, and outcomes in this setting are not well established. From January 2000 to December 2010, 72 patients with primary musculoskeletal tumors of the foot and ankle, both benign and malignant, were treated at a single institution. Of the 72 patients, 56% were female. The median age was 52 years. Of the 72 tumors, 62 (86.11%) were located in the foot and 10 were located in the ankle; 63 (87.5%) were soft tissue tumors and 9 (12.5%) were bone tumors. Overall, 56 (78%) were benign tumors and 16 (22%) were malignant tumors. The most frequent soft tissue and bone diagnosis was giant cell tumor. The median follow-up period was 49 months. The vast majority of the tumors were located in the foot. Benign tumors were dominant, outnumbering malignant tumors by more than 3 to 1. The diversity of the histologic benign types was evident, with giant cell tumor, angiomyoma, and lipoma the most frequent. Regarding the malignant tumors, a clear male predominance was present, the median age was 45 years, and the most frequent tumor was synoviosarcoma. The 9-year overall and disease-free survival rate was 65% and 40%, respectively
Angioleiomyoma affecting the lips : report of 3 cases and review of the literature
Angioleiomyoma is an uncommon benign soft tissue tumor usually found in the lower extremities and rarely observed in oral tissues. It is microscopically characterized as a proliferation of smooth muscle cells intermingled with abundant vascular channels. Oral angioleiomyomas affect mostly the lips, palate, buccal mucosa and tongue, and appears as a submucosal painless nodule. Upper lip is seldom affected and only few cases have been reported. We report three additional cases of angioleiomyoma affecting the lips of elderly patients. All lesions were asymptomatic and presented as submucosal nodules of approximately 1cm. Microscopic analysis on H and E sections revealed similar pattern in all cases, showing well-circumscribed and encapsulated tumors characterized by proliferation of smooth muscle cells and large amount of wide vascular spaces of varying sizes. Most tumor cells were immunoreactive for ?-smooth muscle actin, desmin and HHF-35. CD34 was also positive on the endothelial cells. All patients were surgically treated and no recurrence was observed so far. The oral pathologists and clinicians should consider this entity when assessing nodular lesions on upper lip. © Medicina Oral S. L
No hemos encontrado descrito
este tipo de tumor en un nervio periférico.A cas e of angioleiomyoma on the medial aspec t of the left wrist in the
dorsal sensitive branch of the ulnar nerve, and a review of the literatur e are presented.
This tumor should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients who have
a painful subcutaneous nodul e at the extremities. Ther e is no report in the literatur e
on this type of tumor affecting a peripheral nerve
Vascular leiomyoma of the oral cavity. Clinical, histopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics : presentation of five cases and review of the literature
Leiomyoma, a benign neoplasia arising from smooth muscle is an uncommon neoplasia of the oral cavity. The most common histological subtype in the oral cavity is the vascular one. To supplement information on vascular leiomyoma of the oral cavity (VLOC), we present cases of VLOC describing their clinical, histological, and immunohistochemical characteristics. Case reports. Five cases of VLOC (3 females; 2 males) from the Clinical and Experimental Pathology Laboratory, Dental School, National Autonomous University of México, are included. The most frequent clinical characteristic of VLOC was a single, asymptomatic, slow growing nodule. The age average of the cases was 40.6, however 3 out of our 5 cases were ? 40 years old at the moment of their diagnosis. The lesions were composed of fusiform cells arranged in bundles or fascicles. The neoplastic cells were characterized by eosinophilic cytoplasm and tapered nuclei. The presence of vascular spaces was prominent in all cases. The immunocharacteristics of VLOC neoplastic cells were: alpha smooth muscle (+); vimentin (+), desmin (+), CD34 (-) and S-100 protein (-). The endothelial cells of vascular spaces were CD34 (+). Differential diagnosis of VLOC with fusocellular neoplasm is discussed
Angioleiomyoma in the foot: a case report
Angioleiomyoma is a benign cutaneous tumour that originates from the smooth muscle of the blood vessels. It is painful and infrequent. We present the case of a patient with a painful subcutaneous tumour in the foot that after excision and histological study is diagnosed of angioleiomyom
Near-Alternating Vowels and Consonants
There exist 1024 (2^10) different patterns of vowels and consonants in ten-letter words. Among these 178 have no more than two consonants of two vowels in a row. These are the ones for which it is most likely that examples can be found. The following collection of words form Webster\u27s Second Edition lists 175; can readers fill in the three missing patterns, or find more common words for the others
Pattern of sinonasal tumours presented in Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, Bogura, Bangladesh
Introduction: Sinonasal tumors most commonly arise from the nasal cavity, followed by the maxillary and ethmoid sinus; sphenoid and frontal sinus tumors are both extremely rare entities. In the sinonasal complex, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common histology, constituting 40 to 50% of all sinonasal malignancies. Objective: To assess the pattern of sinonasal tumors presented in Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, Bogura, Bangladesh. Methods: This is a retrospective study carried out in the Department of ENT & Head-Neck Surgery, Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, Bogura, Bangladesh from January to June 2022. It includes 52 cases of neoplastic sinonasal growths. All cases were thoroughly evaluated including history, head and neck examination including endoscopy, imaging and histopathological examinations. All the non-neoplastic cases were excluded from the study. Details of clinical presentation, examination, radiological and histopathological findings were recorded. Results: A total of 52 sinonasal tumors presented during the period. Out of which, 41 were benign and 12 were malignant tumors. Out of 41 benign tumors, inverted papilloma was the most common comprising 12 cases (22.6%) followed by squamous (epithelial) papilloma 11 cases (20.8%), hemangioma 10 cases (18.9%), osteoma and fibrous dysplasia each 2 cases (3.8%) and ossifying fibroma, pleomorphic adenoma and angiomyoma one case each (2%). Out of 12 malignant tumors, squamous cell carcinoma was the commonest malignancy observed in the study. They were four in number (7.5%), followed by basal cell carcinoma in three cases (5.7%) and malignant melanoma in two (3.8%). Adenocarcinoma, osteosarcoma and Rhabdomyosarcoma were each one in number (5.37%) (Table-1). Nasal blockage (94.3%), nasal discharge (66.04%), epistaxis (39.6%), hemifacial pain/pressure (34%) and facial fullness/external deformities, each (18.9%) were among the commonest presentation. Conclusion: The similarities of benign and malignant disorders at initial presentation may lead to a significant delay in the diagnosis of malignancy. Key indicators of malignancy such as cranial neuropathies and proptosis are uncommon at initial presentation and signify advanced disease. Neoplasms of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are rare but require a high index of suspicion for diagnosis due to the overlapping presentation between benign and malignant ones
Angiomyoma – Angioleiomyoma of the Cheek
The authors present the case of an angiomyoma – angioleiomyoma of the cheek in a 58-year-old man. The tumour was
palpable, although clinically not visible, and the only case of a tumour of smooth muscle treated in the Clinical Department
of Oral Surgery over the last 40 years. The operation was performed in the Outpatient Department by intraoral procedure.
The postoperative course passed without complications. Current literature on leiomyomas is cited in the Introduction,
followed by presentation of the case and histological characteristics of the tumour. The example is presented as a
rarity and one of the differential diagnostic possibilities in the diagnostics of soft tissue tumours in the oral cavity
Rare benign tumour at an unusual site-angiomyoma of the ear: a case report and literature review
The objective was to demonstrate the occurrence of the rare benign tumour angiomyoma or angioleiomyoma in the ear canal. Angiomyoma, known as vascular leiomyoma or angioleiomyoma, is a benign tumour of smooth muscle arising from the muscular wall of veins and comprises less than 5% of all benign smooth muscle tumours. Peak incidence is observed in the fourth to sixth decades with the site of predilection being the subcutaneous tissue in the lower limbs, followed by the upper limbs. This is in contrast to our present case, where the angiomyoma was found in the ear canal which is very rare. A 60-year-old female, an otherwise healthy patient presented with fullness in the left ear. Excision of the swelling was done without any complications
