Analyzing the feasibility of integrating urban sustainability assessment indicators with City Information Modelling (CIM)
Sustainability assessment methods have gained the attention between urban planners and policymakers since they promote a comprehensive view of the cities. Intelligent solutions, enabled by advances in information technologies, can accelerate progress in achieving sustainability goals. In this context, City Information Modelling (CIM) emerges as a tool to facilitate urban sustainability assessment implementation. Accordingly, the main question aimed to address in this article is whether conventional sustainability assessment tools can be adapted to the CIM framework. In this regard, this study extracts the most consensual list of indicators from four sustainability assessment methods: BREEAM-C, LEED-ND, SNTool, and SBToolPT Urban, to identify a clear set of key sustainability priorities. The selected sustainability assessment methods are pioneering and often used for performance assessment at the urban scale. Furthermore, the indicators extracted from the assessment methods are measurable and can present accurate results. The study analyses the potential of the selected indicators to be calculated in CIM. The final product of the article is identifying the indicators that are adaptable to be used in the CIM approach. This research received no external funding.
A proposta do
O objetivo do
Cities are in constant transformation; they are living mechanisms that adapt and transform very quickly.
On the other hand, the public management of cities does not follow their transformation processes with
the same speed. Within this context, it is necessary to use management and urban planning tools that
respond to these transformation demands and are aligned with sustainable urban development. In this
regard, information and communication technologies bring different solutions to the growing urban
planning and management needs. Among the various existing solutions, City Information Modeling –
CIM emerges as a concept for modeling the information of urban spaces. CIM's proposal is to have the
information in a digital model that allows better stakeholder integration and facilitates information
exchange. Thus, urban space planning, operation, and maintenance are done efficiently, intelligently,
and sustainably.
To analyze the incorporation of urban sustainability assessment criteria into digital information models,
this study chose the SBToolPT Urban methodology (Sustainable Building Tool), proposing a method for
calculating its indicators and parameters through the CIM. This study aims to develop a CIM platform
capable of performing these calculations, resulting in the proposal of a method. In order to validate the
proposed method, all the indicators and parameters of the SBToolPT Urban were analyzed and the
possibility of each one of them being calculated through the CIM was verified. The indicators and
parameters were classified as “YES”, “NO” or “PARTIALLY”, then the method was applied to one of
them, I9 – Distribution of green spaces, as an example. The analysis concluded that of the 52
parameters, among the 41 indicators, at least 28 parameters can be calculated through the proposed
method and another 6 can be partially calculated.
It is intended that the proposed method will serve as a basis for further studies on the integration of
urban sustainability assessment with digital information models. In addition, it is expected that the
method will help in the adoption of sustainability assessment systems, namely the SBToolPT Urban, by
automating the calculation of its indicators and parameters, facilitating the evaluation process, decision-making, and integration between the various stakeholders
