Dynamic Queue Utilization Based MAC for multi-hop Ad Hoc networks
The end-to-end throughput in single flow multi-hop Ad Hoc networks decays rapidly with path length. Along the path, the success rate of delivering packets towards the destination decreases due to higher contention, interference, limited buffer size and limited shared bandwidth constraints. In such environments the queues fill up faster in nodes closer to the source than in the nodes nearer the destination. In order to reduce buffer overflow and improve throughput for a saturated network, this paper introduces a new MAC protocol named Dynamic Queue Utilization Based Medium Access Control (DQUB-MAC). The protocol aims to prioritise access to the channel for queues with higher utilization and helps in achieving higher throughput by rapidly draining packets towards the destination. The proposed MAC enhances the performance of an end-to-end data flow by up to 30% for a six hop transmission in a chain topology and is demonstrated to remain competitive for other network topologies and for a variety of packet sizes
TCP-Aware Backpressure Routing and Scheduling
In this work, we explore the performance of backpressure routing and
scheduling for TCP flows over wireless networks. TCP and backpressure are not
compatible due to a mismatch between the congestion control mechanism of TCP
and the queue size based routing and scheduling of the backpressure framework.
We propose a TCP-aware backpressure routing and scheduling that takes into
account the behavior of TCP flows. TCP-aware backpressure (i) provides
throughput optimality guarantees in the Lyapunov optimization framework, (ii)
gracefully combines TCP and backpressure without making any changes to the TCP
protocol, (iii) improves the throughput of TCP flows significantly, and (iv)
provides fairness across competing TCP flows
Power-Constrained Fuzzy Logic Control of Video Streaming over a Wireless Interconnect
Wireless communication of video, with Bluetooth as an example, represents a compromise between channel conditions, display and decode deadlines, and energy constraints. This paper proposes fuzzy logic control (FLC) of automatic repeat request (ARQ) as a way of reconciling these factors, with a 40% saving in power in the worst channel conditions from economizing on transmissions when channel errors occur. Whatever the channel conditions are, FLC is shown to outperform the default Bluetooth scheme and an alternative Bluetooth-adaptive ARQ scheme in terms of reduced packet loss and delay, as well as improved video quality

FHCF: A simple and efficient scheduling scheme for IEEE 802.11e wireless networks
The IEEE 802.11e medium access control (MAC) layer protocol is an emerging standard to support quality of service (QoS) in 802.11 wireless networks. Some recent works show that the 802.11e hybrid coordination function (HCF) can improve signi¯cantly the QoS support in 802.11 networks. A simple HCF referenced scheduler has been proposed in the 802.11e which takes into account the QoS requirements of °ows and allocates time to stations on the basis of the mean sending rate. As we show in this paper, this HCF referenced scheduling algorithm is only e±cient and works well for °ows with strict constant bit rate (CBR) characteristics. However, a lot of real-time applications, such as videoconferencing, have some variations in their packet sizes, sending rates or even have variable bit rate (VBR) characteristics. In this paper we propose FHCF, a simple and e±cient scheduling algorithm for 802.11e that aims to be fair for both CBR and VBR °ows. FHCF uses queue length estimations to tune its time allocation to mobile stations. We present analytical model evaluations and a set of simulations results, and provide performance comparisons with the 802.11e HCF referenced scheduler. Our performance study indicates that FHCF provides good fairness while supporting bandwidth and delay requirements for a large range of network loads
A Game Theory based Contention Window Adjustment for IEEE 802.11 under Heavy Load
The 802.11 families are considered as the most applicable set of standards for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) where nodes make access to the wireless media using random access techniques. In such networks, each node adjusts its contention window to the minimum size irrespective of the number of competing nodes, so in saturated mode and excessive number of nodes available, the network performance is reduced due to severe collision probability. A cooperative game is being proposed to adjust the users’ contention windows in improving the network throughput, delay and packet drop ratio under heavy traffic load circumstances. The system’s performance evaluated by simulations indicate some superiorities of the proposed method over 802.11-DCF (Distribute Coordinate Function)
Buffer Sizing for 802.11 Based Networks
We consider the sizing of network buffers in 802.11 based networks. Wireless
networks face a number of fundamental issues that do not arise in wired
networks. We demonstrate that the use of fixed size buffers in 802.11 networks
inevitably leads to either undesirable channel under-utilization or unnecessary
high delays. We present two novel dynamic buffer sizing algorithms that achieve
high throughput while maintaining low delay across a wide range of network
conditions. Experimental measurements demonstrate the utility of the proposed
