A Low-Complexity Approach to Distributed Cooperative Caching with Geographic Constraints
We consider caching in cellular networks in which each base station is
equipped with a cache that can store a limited number of files. The popularity
of the files is known and the goal is to place files in the caches such that
the probability that a user at an arbitrary location in the plane will find the
file that she requires in one of the covering caches is maximized.
We develop distributed asynchronous algorithms for deciding which contents to
store in which cache. Such cooperative algorithms require communication only
between caches with overlapping coverage areas and can operate in asynchronous
manner. The development of the algorithms is principally based on an
observation that the problem can be viewed as a potential game. Our basic
algorithm is derived from the best response dynamics. We demonstrate that the
complexity of each best response step is independent of the number of files,
linear in the cache capacity and linear in the maximum number of base stations
that cover a certain area. Then, we show that the overall algorithm complexity
for a discrete cache placement is polynomial in both network size and catalog
size. In practical examples, the algorithm converges in just a few iterations.
Also, in most cases of interest, the basic algorithm finds the best Nash
equilibrium corresponding to the global optimum. We provide two extensions of
our basic algorithm based on stochastic and deterministic simulated annealing
which find the global optimum.
Finally, we demonstrate the hit probability evolution on real and synthetic
networks numerically and show that our distributed caching algorithm performs
significantly better than storing the most popular content, probabilistic

Optimal Caching and Routing in Hybrid Networks
Hybrid networks consisting of MANET nodes and cellular infrastructure have
been recently proposed to improve the performance of military networks. Prior
work has demonstrated the benefits of in-network content caching in a wired,
Internet context. We investigate the problem of developing optimal routing and
caching policies in a hybrid network supporting in-network caching with the
goal of minimizing overall content-access delay. Here, needed content may
always be accessed at a back-end server via the cellular infrastructure;
alternatively, content may also be accessed via cache-equipped "cluster" nodes
within the MANET. To access content, MANET nodes must thus decide whether to
route to in-MANET cluster nodes or to back-end servers via the cellular
infrastructure; the in-MANET cluster nodes must additionally decide which
content to cache. We model the cellular path as either i) a
congestion-insensitive fixed-delay path or ii) a congestion-sensitive path
modeled as an M/M/1 queue. We demonstrate that under the assumption of
stationary, independent requests, it is optimal to adopt static caching (i.e.,
to keep a cache's content fixed over time) based on content popularity. We also
show that it is optimal to route to in-MANET caches for content cached there,
but to route requests for remaining content via the cellular infrastructure for
the congestion-insensitive case and to split traffic between the in-MANET
caches and cellular infrastructure for the congestion-sensitive case. We
develop a simple distributed algorithm for the joint routing/caching problem

A Delay-Aware Caching Algorithm for Wireless D2D Caching Networks
Recently, wireless caching techniques have been studied to satisfy lower
delay requirements and offload traffic from peak periods. By storing parts of
the popular files at the mobile users, users can locate some of their requested
files in their own caches or the caches at their neighbors. In the latter case,
when a user receives files from its neighbors, device-to-device (D2D)
communication is enabled. D2D communication underlaid with cellular networks is
also a new paradigm for the upcoming 5G wireless systems. By allowing a pair of
adjacent D2D users to communicate directly, D2D communication can achieve
higher throughput, better energy efficiency and lower traffic delay. In this
work, we propose a very efficient caching algorithm for D2D-enabled cellular
networks to minimize the average transmission delay. Instead of searching over
all possible solutions, our algorithm finds out the best pairs,
which provide the best delay improvement in each loop to form a caching policy
with very low transmission delay and high throughput. This algorithm is also
extended to address a more general scenario, in which the distributions of
fading coefficients and values of system parameters potentially change over
time. Via numerical results, the superiority of the proposed algorithm is
verified by comparing it with a naive algorithm, in which all users simply
cache their favorite files
A Literature Survey of Cooperative Caching in Content Distribution Networks
Content distribution networks (CDNs) which serve to deliver web objects
(e.g., documents, applications, music and video, etc.) have seen tremendous
growth since its emergence. To minimize the retrieving delay experienced by a
user with a request for a web object, caching strategies are often applied -
contents are replicated at edges of the network which is closer to the user
such that the network distance between the user and the object is reduced. In
this literature survey, evolution of caching is studied. A recent research
paper [15] in the field of large-scale caching for CDN was chosen to be the
anchor paper which serves as a guide to the topic. Research studies after and
relevant to the anchor paper are also analyzed to better evaluate the
statements and results of the anchor paper and more importantly, to obtain an

Online Coded Caching
We consider a basic content distribution scenario consisting of a single
origin server connected through a shared bottleneck link to a number of users
each equipped with a cache of finite memory. The users issue a sequence of
content requests from a set of popular files, and the goal is to operate the
caches as well as the server such that these requests are satisfied with the
minimum number of bits sent over the shared link. Assuming a basic Markov model
for renewing the set of popular files, we characterize approximately the
optimal long-term average rate of the shared link. We further prove that the
optimal online scheme has approximately the same performance as the optimal
offline scheme, in which the cache contents can be updated based on the entire
set of popular files before each new request. To support these theoretical
results, we propose an online coded caching scheme termed coded least-recently
sent (LRS) and simulate it for a demand time series derived from the dataset
made available by Netflix for the Netflix Prize. For this time series, we show
that the proposed coded LRS algorithm significantly outperforms the popular
