A VHDL-AMS Simulation Environment for an UWB Impulse Radio Transceiver
Ultra-Wide-Band (UWB) communication based on the impulse radio paradigm is becoming increasingly popular. According to the IEEE 802.15 WPAN Low Rate Alternative PHY Task Group 4a, UWB will play a major role in localization applications, due to the high time resolution of UWB signals which allow accurate indirect measurements of distance between transceivers. Key for the successful implementation of UWB transceivers is the level of integration that will be reached, for which a simulation environment that helps take appropriate design decisions is crucial. Owing to this motivation, in this paper we propose a multiresolution UWB simulation environment based on the VHDL-AMS hardware description language, along with a proper methodology which helps tackle the complexity of designing a mixed-signal UWB System-on-Chip. We applied the methodology and used the simulation environment for the specification and design of an UWB transceiver based on the energy detection principle. As a by-product, simulation results show the effectiveness of UWB in the so-called ranging application, that is the accurate evaluation of the distance between a couple of transceivers using the two-way-ranging metho
Integer-Forcing Source Coding
Integer-Forcing (IF) is a new framework, based on compute-and-forward, for
decoding multiple integer linear combinations from the output of a Gaussian
multiple-input multiple-output channel. This work applies the IF approach to
arrive at a new low-complexity scheme, IF source coding, for distributed lossy
compression of correlated Gaussian sources under a minimum mean squared error
distortion measure. All encoders use the same nested lattice codebook. Each
encoder quantizes its observation using the fine lattice as a quantizer and
reduces the result modulo the coarse lattice, which plays the role of binning.
Rather than directly recovering the individual quantized signals, the decoder
first recovers a full-rank set of judiciously chosen integer linear
combinations of the quantized signals, and then inverts it. In general, the
linear combinations have smaller average powers than the original signals. This
allows to increase the density of the coarse lattice, which in turn translates
to smaller compression rates. We also propose and analyze a one-shot version of
IF source coding, that is simple enough to potentially lead to a new design
principle for analog-to-digital converters that can exploit spatial
correlations between the sampled signals.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Information Theor
Multiple Parameter Estimation With Quantized Channel Output
We present a general problem formulation for optimal parameter estimation
based on quantized observations, with application to antenna array
communication and processing (channel estimation, time-of-arrival (TOA) and
direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation). The work is of interest in the case
when low resolution A/D-converters (ADCs) have to be used to enable higher
sampling rate and to simplify the hardware. An Expectation-Maximization (EM)
based algorithm is proposed for solving this problem in a general setting.
Besides, we derive the Cramer-Rao Bound (CRB) and discuss the effects of
quantization and the optimal choice of the ADC characteristic. Numerical and
analytical analysis reveals that reliable estimation may still be possible even
when the quantization is very coarse.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, International ITG Workshop on Smart Antennas -
