Analysis and Design of Binary Message-Passing Decoders
Binary message-passing decoders for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are
studied by using extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) charts. The channel
delivers hard or soft decisions and the variable node decoder performs all
computations in the L-value domain. A hard decision channel results in the
well-know Gallager B algorithm, and increasing the output alphabet from hard
decisions to two bits yields a gain of more than 1.0 dB in the required signal
to noise ratio when using optimized codes. The code optimization requires
adapting the mixing property of EXIT functions to the case of binary
message-passing decoders. Finally, it is shown that errors on cycles consisting
only of degree two and three variable nodes cannot be corrected and a necessary
and sufficient condition for the existence of a cycle-free subgraph is derived.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, submitted to the IEEE Transactions on

Fast intra prediction in the transform domain
In this paper, we present a fast intra prediction method based on separating the transformed coefficients. The
prediction block can be obtained from the transformed and quantized neighboring block generating minimum distortion
for each DC and AC coefficients independently. Two prediction methods are proposed, one is full block search
prediction (FBSP) and the other is edge based distance prediction (EBDP), that find the best matched transformed
coefficients on additional neighboring blocks. Experimental results show that the use of transform coefficients
greatly enhances the efficiency of intra prediction whilst keeping complexity low compared to H.264/AVC
The model of an anomaly detector for HiLumi LHC magnets based on Recurrent Neural Networks and adaptive quantization
This paper focuses on an examination of an applicability of Recurrent Neural
Network models for detecting anomalous behavior of the CERN superconducting
magnets. In order to conduct the experiments, the authors designed and
implemented an adaptive signal quantization algorithm and a custom GRU-based
detector and developed a method for the detector parameters selection. Three
different datasets were used for testing the detector. Two artificially
generated datasets were used to assess the raw performance of the system
whereas the 231 MB dataset composed of the signals acquired from HiLumi magnets
was intended for real-life experiments and model training. Several different
setups of the developed anomaly detection system were evaluated and compared
with state-of-the-art OC-SVM reference model operating on the same data. The
OC-SVM model was equipped with a rich set of feature extractors accounting for
a range of the input signal properties. It was determined in the course of the
experiments that the detector, along with its supporting design methodology,
reaches F1 equal or very close to 1 for almost all test sets. Due to the
profile of the data, the best_length setup of the detector turned out to
perform the best among all five tested configuration schemes of the detection
system. The quantization parameters have the biggest impact on the overall
performance of the detector with the best values of input/output grid equal to
16 and 8, respectively. The proposed solution of the detection significantly
outperformed OC-SVM-based detector in most of the cases, with much more stable

Perceptually-Driven Video Coding with the Daala Video Codec
The Daala project is a royalty-free video codec that attempts to compete with
the best patent-encumbered codecs. Part of our strategy is to replace core
tools of traditional video codecs with alternative approaches, many of them
designed to take perceptual aspects into account, rather than optimizing for
simple metrics like PSNR. This paper documents some of our experiences with
these tools, which ones worked and which did not. We evaluate which tools are
easy to integrate into a more traditional codec design, and show results in the
