    Approximating the Smallest Spanning Subgraph for 2-Edge-Connectivity in Directed Graphs

    Let GG be a strongly connected directed graph. We consider the following three problems, where we wish to compute the smallest strongly connected spanning subgraph of GG that maintains respectively: the 22-edge-connected blocks of GG (\textsf{2EC-B}); the 22-edge-connected components of GG (\textsf{2EC-C}); both the 22-edge-connected blocks and the 22-edge-connected components of GG (\textsf{2EC-B-C}). All three problems are NP-hard, and thus we are interested in efficient approximation algorithms. For \textsf{2EC-C} we can obtain a 3/23/2-approximation by combining previously known results. For \textsf{2EC-B} and \textsf{2EC-B-C}, we present new 44-approximation algorithms that run in linear time. We also propose various heuristics to improve the size of the computed subgraphs in practice, and conduct a thorough experimental study to assess their merits in practical scenarios

    Algorithms and complexity analyses for some combinational optimization problems

    The main focus of this dissertation is on classical combinatorial optimization problems in two important areas: scheduling and network design. In the area of scheduling, the main interest is in problems in the master-slave model. In this model, each machine is either a master machine or a slave machine. Each job is associated with a preprocessing task, a slave task and a postprocessing task that must be executed in this order. Each slave task has a dedicated slave machine. All the preprocessing and postprocessing tasks share a single master machine or the same set of master machines. A job may also have an arbitrary release time before which the preprocessing task is not available to be processed. The main objective in this dissertation is to minimize the total completion time or the makespan. Both the complexity and algorithmic issues of these problems are considered. It is shown that the problem of minimizing the total completion time is strongly NP-hard even under severe constraints. Various efficient algorithms are designed to minimize the total completion time under various scenarios. In the area of network design, the survivable network design problems are studied first. The input for this problem is an undirected graph G = (V, E), a non-negative cost for each edge, and a nonnegative connectivity requirement ruv for every (unordered) pair of vertices &ruv. The goal is to find a minimum-cost subgraph in which each pair of vertices u,v is joined by at least ruv edge (vertex)-disjoint paths. A Polynomial Time Approximation Scheme (PTAS) is designed for the problem when the graph is Euclidean and the connectivity requirement of any point is at most 2. PTASs or Quasi-PTASs are also designed for 2-edge-connectivity problem and biconnectivity problem and their variations in unweighted or weighted planar graphs. Next, the problem of constructing geometric fault-tolerant spanners with low cost and bounded maximum degree is considered. The first result shows that there is a greedy algorithm which constructs fault-tolerant spanners having asymptotically optimal bounds for both the maximum degree and the total cost at the same time. Then an efficient algorithm is developed which finds fault-tolerant spanners with asymptotically optimal bound for the maximum degree and almost optimal bound for the total cost

    Approximating Minimum-Size 2-Edge-Connected and 2-Vertex-Connected Spanning Subgraphs

    We study the unweighted 2-edge-connected and 2-vertex-connected spanning subgraph problems. A graph is 2-edge-connected if it is connected on removal of an edge, and it is 2-vertex-connected if it is connected on removal of a vertex. The problem of finding a minimum-size 2-edge-connected (or 2-vertex-connected) spanning subgraph of a given graph is NP-hard. We present a 4/3-approximation algorithm for unweighted 2ECSS on 3-vertex-connected input graphs, which matches the best known approximation ratio due to Sebő and Vygen for the general unweighted 2ECSS problem, but our analysis is with respect to the D2 lower bound. We also give a 17/12-approximation algorithm for unweighted 2VCSS on graphs of minimum degree at least 3, which is lower than the best known ratios of 3/2 by Garg, Santosh and Singla and 10/7 by Heeger and Vygen for the general unweighted 2VCSS problem. These algorithms are accompanied by new theorems about the known lower bounds

    Algorithmic and complexity aspects of simple coalitional games

    Simple coalitional games are a fundamental class of cooperative games and voting games which are used to model coalition formation, resource allocation and decision making in computer science, artificial intelligence and multiagent systems. Although simple coalitional games are well studied in the domain of game theory and social choice, their algorithmic and computational complexity aspects have received less attention till recently. The computational aspects of simple coalitional games are of increased importance as these games are used by computer scientists to model distributed settings. This thesis fits in the wider setting of the interplay between economics and computer science which has led to the development of algorithmic game theory and computational social choice. A unified view of the computational aspects of simple coalitional games is presented here for the first time. Certain complexity results also apply to other coalitional games such as skill games and matching games. The following issues are given special consideration: influence of players, limit and complexity of manipulations in the coalitional games and complexity of resource allocation on networks. The complexity of comparison of influence between players in simple games is characterized. The simple games considered are represented by winning coalitions, minimal winning coalitions, weighted voting games or multiple weighted voting games. A comprehensive classification of weighted voting games which can be solved in polynomial time is presented. An efficient algorithm which uses generating functions and interpolation to compute an integer weight vector for target power indices is proposed. Voting theory, especially the Penrose Square Root Law, is used to investigate the fairness of a real life voting model. Computational complexity of manipulation in social choice protocols can determine whether manipulation is computationally feasible or not. The computational complexity and bounds of manipulation are considered from various angles including control, false-name manipulation and bribery. Moreover, the computational complexity of computing various cooperative game solutions of simple games in dierent representations is studied. Certain structural results regarding least core payos extend to the general monotone cooperative game. The thesis also studies a coalitional game called the spanning connectivity game. It is proved that whereas computing the Banzhaf values and Shapley-Shubik indices of such games is #P-complete, there is a polynomial time combinatorial algorithm to compute the nucleolus. The results have interesting significance for optimal strategies for the wiretapping game which is a noncooperative game defined on a network

    New techniques for graph algorithms

The motivation for the research presented in this thesis stems from addressing the above question in the context of algorithmic graph theory. To pursue this direction, we develop a toolkit that combines a diverse set of modern algorithmic techniques, including sparsification, low-stretch spanning trees, the multiplicative-weights-update method, dynamic graph algorithms, fast Laplacian system solvers, and tools of spectral graph theory. Using this toolkit, we obtain improved algorithms for several basic graph problems including: -- The Maximum s-t Flow and Minimum s-t Cut Problems. We develop a new approach to computing (1 - [epsilon])-approximately maximum s-t flow and (1 + [epsilon])-approximately minimum s-t cut in undirected graphs that gives the fastest known algorithms for these tasks. These algorithms are the first ones to improve the long-standing bound of O(n3/2') running time on sparse graphs; -- Multicommodity Flow Problems. We set forth a new method of speeding up the existing approximation algorithms for multicommodity flow problems, and use it to obtain the fastest-known (1 - [epsilon])-approximation algorithms for these problems. These results improve upon the best previously known bounds by a factor of roughly [omega](m/n), and make the resulting running times essentially match the [omega](mn) "flow-decomposition barrier" that is a natural obstacle to all the existing approaches; -- " Undirected (Multi-)Cut-Based Minimization Problems. We develop a general framework for designing fast approximation algorithms for (multi-)cutbased minimization problems in undirected graphs. Applying this framework leads to the first algorithms for several fundamental graph partitioning primitives, such as the (generalized) sparsest cut problem and the balanced separator problem, that run in close to linear time while still providing polylogarithmic approximation guarantees; -- The Asymmetric Traveling Salesman Problem. We design an O( )- approximation algorithm for the classical problem of combinatorial optimization: the asymmetric traveling salesman problem. This is the first asymptotic improvement over the long-standing approximation barrier of e(log n) for this problem; -- Random Spanning Tree Generation.     Approximation Algorithms for Path TSP, ATSP, and TAP via Relaxations

    Linear programming (LP) relaxations provide a powerful technique to design approximation algorithms for combinatorial optimization problems. In the first part of the thesis, we study the metric s-t path Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) via LP relaxations. We first consider the s-t path graph-TSP, a critical special case of the metric s-t path TSP. We design a new simple LP-based algorithm for the s-t path graph-TSP that achieves the best known approximation factor of 1.5. Then, we turn our attention to the general metric s-t path TSP. [An, Kleinberg, and Shmoys, STOC 2012] improved on the long standing 5/3-approximation factor and presented an algorithm that achieves an approximation factor of (1+\sqrt{5})/2 \approx 1.61803. Later, [Sebo, IPCO 2013] further improved the approximation factor to 8/5. We present a simple, self-contained analysis that unifies both results. Additionally, we compare two different LP relaxations of the s-t path TSP, namely the path version of the Held-Karp LP relaxation for TSP and a weaker LP relaxation, and we show that both LPs have the same (fractional) optimal value. Also, we show that the minimum cost of integral solutions of the two LPs are within a factor of 3/2 of each other. Furthermore, we prove that a half-integral solution of the stronger LP relaxation of cost c can be rounded to an integral solution of cost at most 3c/2. Finally, we give an instance that presents obstructions to two natural methods that aim for an approximation factor of 3/2. The Sherali-Adams (SA) system and the Lasserre (Las) system are two popular Lift-and-Project systems that tighten a given LP relaxation in a systematic way. In the second part of the thesis, we study the Asymmetric Traveling Salesman Problem (ATSP) and unweighted Tree Augmentation Problem, respectively, in the framework of the SA system and the Las system. For ATSP, our focus is on negative results. For any fixed integer t>=0 and small \epsilon, 0<\epsilon<<1, we prove that the integrality ratio for level t of the SA system starting with the standard LP relaxation of ATSP is at least 1+(1-\epsilon)/(2t+3). For a further relaxation of ATSP called the balanced LP relaxation, we obtain an integrality ratio lower bound of 1+(1-\epsilon)/(t+1) for level t of the SA system. Also, our results for the standard LP relaxation extend to the path version of ATSP. For the unweighted Tree Augmentation Problem, our focus is on positive results. We study this problem via the Las system. We prove an upper bound of (1.5+\epsilon) on the integrality ratio of a semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation, where \epsilon>0 can be any small constant, by analyzing a combinatorial algorithm. This SDP relaxation is derived by applying the Las system to an initial LP relaxation. We generalize the combinatorial analysis of integral solutions from the previous literature to fractional solutions by identifying some properties of fractional solutions of the Las system via the decomposition result of [Karlin, Mathieu, and Nguyen, IPCO 2011]
