The trend in network processing is towards layer 4-7 processing in the routers and switches. The tasks in these layers are usually more complicated than the traditional router tasks such as IP forwarding. Implementing higher layer processing at high speeds, e.g., 40 Gbps, requires innovative technology. Legacy solutions based on general purpose processing cannot meet the challenge.
