Editorial -Special issue on adaptive multimedia computing
In recent years, there is an emerging research area in multimedia computing, with the increasing number of related work in scalable video, adaptive multimedia documents, adaptive multimedia services, to name just a few. This new trend comes about partly due to the increasing use of mobile media devices where media requirements could change among users and devices and at different times of reception or presentation, and partly due to the changing network conditions, where best-effort service is the general practice. Any change in Quality of Services (QoS) could imply a change in the delivery or scheduling of media contents. To complicate the matter, user interruptions or requirement changes during the communication process could also occur; for example, a user may not be satisfied with the current media quality and decide an upgrade in real time. The status quo is that this new research paradigm is beginning to take shape while no effort has been made to draw a roadmap for it. Smart PIN: utility-based replication and delivery of multimedia content to mobile users in wireless networks
Next generation wireless networks rely on heterogeneous connectivity technologies to support various rich media services such as personal information storage, file sharing and multimedia streaming. Due to usersâ mobility and dynamic characteristics of wireless networks, data availability in collaborating devices is a critical issue. In this context Smart PIN was proposed as a personal information network which focuses on performance of delivery and cost efficiency. Smart PIN uses a novel data replication scheme based on individual and overall system utility to best balance the requirements for static data and multimedia content delivery with variable device availability due to user mobility. Simulations show improved results in comparison with other general purpose data replication schemes in terms of data availability
A cross-layer approach to enhance QoS for multimedia applications over satellite
The need for on-demand QoS support for communications over satellite is of primary importance for distributed multimedia applications. This is particularly true for the return link which is often a bottleneck due to the large set of end-users accessing a very limited uplink resource. Facing this need, Demand Assignment Multiple Access (DAMA) is a classical technique that allows satellite operators to offer various types of services, while managing the resources of the satellite system efficiently. Tackling the quality degradation and delay accumulation issues that can result from the use of these techniques, this paper proposes an instantiation of the Application Layer Framing (ALF) approach, using a cross-layer interpreter(xQoS-Interpreter). The information provided by this interpreter is used to manage the resource provided to a terminal by the satellite system in order to improve the quality of multimedia presentations from the end users point of view. Several experiments are carried out for different loads on the return link. Their impact on QoS is measured through different application as well as network level metrics
