    Depth Estimation Using 2D RGB Images

    Single image depth estimation is an ill-posed problem. That is, it is not mathematically possible to uniquely estimate the 3rd dimension (or depth) from a single 2D image. Hence, additional constraints need to be incorporated in order to regulate the solution space. As a result, in the first part of this dissertation, the idea of constraining the model for more accurate depth estimation by taking advantage of the similarity between the RGB image and the corresponding depth map at the geometric edges of the 3D scene is explored. Although deep learning based methods are very successful in computer vision and handle noise very well, they suffer from poor generalization when the test and train distributions are not close. While, the geometric methods do not have the generalization problem since they benefit from temporal information in an unsupervised manner. They are sensitive to noise, though. At the same time, explicitly modeling of a dynamic scenes as well as flexible objects in traditional computer vision methods is a big challenge. Considering the advantages and disadvantages of each approach, a hybrid method, which benefits from both, is proposed here by extending traditional geometric models’ abilities to handle flexible and dynamic objects in the scene. This is made possible by relaxing geometric computer vision rules from one motion model for some areas of the scene into one for every pixel in the scene. This enables the model to detect even small, flexible, floating debris in a dynamic scene. However, it makes the optimization under-constrained. To change the optimization from under-constrained to over-constrained while maintaining the model’s flexibility, ”moving object detection loss” and ”synchrony loss” are designed. The algorithm is trained in an unsupervised fashion. The primary results are in no way comparable to the current state of the art. Because the training process is so slow, it is difficult to compare it to the current state of the art. Also, the algorithm lacks stability. In addition, the optical flow model is extremely noisy and naive. At the end, some solutions are suggested to address these issues

    Localization in urban environments. A hybrid interval-probabilistic method

    Ensuring safety has become a paramount concern with the increasing autonomy of vehicles and the advent of autonomous driving. One of the most fundamental tasks of increased autonomy is localization, which is essential for safe operation. To quantify safety requirements, the concept of integrity has been introduced in aviation, based on the ability of the system to provide timely and correct alerts when the safe operation of the systems can no longer be guaranteed. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the localization's uncertainty to determine the system's operability. In the literature, probability and set-membership theory are two predominant approaches that provide mathematical tools to assess uncertainty. Probabilistic approaches often provide accurate point-valued results but tend to underestimate the uncertainty. Set-membership approaches reliably estimate the uncertainty but can be overly pessimistic, producing inappropriately large uncertainties and no point-valued results. While underestimating the uncertainty can lead to misleading information and dangerous system failure without warnings, overly pessimistic uncertainty estimates render the system inoperative for practical purposes as warnings are fired more often. This doctoral thesis aims to study the symbiotic relationship between set-membership-based and probabilistic localization approaches and combine them into a unified hybrid localization approach. This approach enables safe operation while not being overly pessimistic regarding the uncertainty estimation. In the scope of this work, a novel Hybrid Probabilistic- and Set-Membership-based Coarse and Refined (HyPaSCoRe) Localization method is introduced. This method localizes a robot in a building map in real-time and considers two types of hybridizations. On the one hand, set-membership approaches are used to robustify and control probabilistic approaches. On the other hand, probabilistic approaches are used to reduce the pessimism of set-membership approaches by augmenting them with further probabilistic constraints. The method consists of three modules - visual odometry, coarse localization, and refined localization. The HyPaSCoRe Localization uses a stereo camera system, a LiDAR sensor, and GNSS data, focusing on localization in urban canyons where GNSS data can be inaccurate. The visual odometry module computes the relative motion of the vehicle. In contrast, the coarse localization module uses set-membership approaches to narrow down the feasible set of poses and provides the set of most likely poses inside the feasible set using a probabilistic approach. The refined localization module further refines the coarse localization result by reducing the pessimism of the uncertainty estimate by incorporating probabilistic constraints into the set-membership approach. The experimental evaluation of the HyPaSCoRe shows that it maintains the integrity of the uncertainty estimation while providing accurate, most likely point-valued solutions in real-time. Introducing this new hybrid localization approach contributes to developing safe and reliable algorithms in the context of autonomous driving

    Computationally efficient deformable 3D object tracking with a monocular RGB camera

    182 p.Monocular RGB cameras are present in most scopes and devices, including embedded environments like robots, cars and home automation. Most of these environments have in common a significant presence of human operators with whom the system has to interact. This context provides the motivation to use the captured monocular images to improve the understanding of the operator and the surrounding scene for more accurate results and applications.However, monocular images do not have depth information, which is a crucial element in understanding the 3D scene correctly. Estimating the three-dimensional information of an object in the scene using a single two-dimensional image is already a challenge. The challenge grows if the object is deformable (e.g., a human body or a human face) and there is a need to track its movements and interactions in the scene.Several methods attempt to solve this task, including modern regression methods based on Deep NeuralNetworks. However, despite the great results, most are computationally demanding and therefore unsuitable for several environments. Computational efficiency is a critical feature for computationally constrained setups like embedded or onboard systems present in robotics and automotive applications, among others.This study proposes computationally efficient methodologies to reconstruct and track three-dimensional deformable objects, such as human faces and human bodies, using a single monocular RGB camera. To model the deformability of faces and bodies, it considers two types of deformations: non-rigid deformations for face tracking, and rigid multi-body deformations for body pose tracking. Furthermore, it studies their performance on computationally restricted devices like smartphones and onboard systems used in the automotive industry. The information extracted from such devices gives valuable insight into human behaviour a crucial element in improving human-machine interaction.We tested the proposed approaches in different challenging application fields like onboard driver monitoring systems, human behaviour analysis from monocular videos, and human face tracking on embedded devices

    A multi-hypothesis approach for range-only simultaneous localization and mapping with aerial robots

    Los sistemas de Range-only SLAM (o RO-SLAM) tienen como objetivo la construcción de un mapa formado por la posición de un conjunto de sensores de distancia y la localización simultánea del robot con respecto a dicho mapa, utilizando únicamente para ello medidas de distancia. Los sensores de distancia son dispositivos capaces de medir la distancia relativa entre cada par de dispositivos. Estos sensores son especialmente interesantes para su applicación a vehículos aéreos debido a su reducido tamaño y peso. Además, estos dispositivos son capaces de operar en interiores o zonas con carencia de señal GPS y no requieren de una línea de visión directa entre cada par de dispositivos a diferencia de otros sensores como cámaras o sensores laser, permitiendo así obtener una lectura de datos continuada sin oclusiones. Sin embargo, estos sensores presentan un modelo de observación no lineal con una deficiencia de rango debido a la carencia de información de orientación relativa entre cada par de sensores. Además, cuando se incrementa la dimensionalidad del problema de 2D a 3D para su aplicación a vehículos aéreos, el número de variables ocultas del modelo aumenta haciendo el problema más costoso computacionalmente especialmente ante implementaciones multi-hipótesis. Esta tesis estudia y propone diferentes métodos que permitan la aplicación eficiente de estos sistemas RO-SLAM con vehículos terrestres o aéreos en entornos reales. Para ello se estudia la escalabilidad del sistema en relación al número de variables ocultas y el número de dispositivos a posicionar en el mapa. A diferencia de otros métodos descritos en la literatura de RO-SLAM, los algoritmos propuestos en esta tesis tienen en cuenta las correlaciones existentes entre cada par de dispositivos especialmente para la integración de medidas estÃa˛ticas entre pares de sensores del mapa. Además, esta tesis estudia el ruido y las medidas espúreas que puedan generar los sensores de distancia para mejorar la robustez de los algoritmos propuestos con técnicas de detección y filtración. También se proponen métodos de integración de medidas de otros sensores como cámaras, altímetros o GPS para refinar las estimaciones realizadas por el sistema RO-SLAM. Otros capítulos estudian y proponen técnicas para la integración de los algoritmos RO-SLAM presentados a sistemas con múltiples robots, así como el uso de técnicas de percepción activa que permitan reducir la incertidumbre del sistema ante trayectorias con carencia de trilateración entre el robot y los sensores de destancia estáticos del mapa. Todos los métodos propuestos han sido validados mediante simulaciones y experimentos con sistemas reales detallados en esta tesis. Además, todos los sistemas software implementados, así como los conjuntos de datos registrados durante la experimentación han sido publicados y documentados para su uso en la comunidad científica
