Multimodal spatio-temporal deep learning framework for 3D object detection in instrumented vehicles
This thesis presents the utilization of multiple modalities, such as image and lidar, to incorporate spatio-temporal information from sequence data into deep learning architectures for 3Dobject detection in instrumented vehicles. The race to autonomy in instrumented vehicles or self-driving cars has stimulated significant research in developing autonomous driver assistance systems (ADAS) technologies related explicitly to perception systems. Object detection plays a crucial role in perception systems by providing spatial information to its subsequent modules; hence, accurate detection is a significant task supporting autonomous driving. The advent of deep learning in computer vision applications and the availability of multiple sensing modalities such as 360° imaging, lidar, and radar have led to state-of-the-art 2D and 3Dobject detection architectures. Most current state-of-the-art 3D object detection frameworks consider single-frame reference. However, these methods do not utilize temporal information associated with the objects or scenes from the sequence data. Thus, the present research hypothesizes that multimodal temporal information can contribute to bridging the gap between 2D and 3D metric space by improving the accuracy of deep learning frameworks for 3D object estimations. The thesis presents understanding multimodal data representations and selecting hyper-parameters using public datasets such as KITTI and nuScenes with Frustum-ConvNet as a baseline architecture. Secondly, an attention mechanism was employed along with convolutional-LSTM to extract spatial-temporal information from sequence data to improve 3D estimations and to aid the architecture in focusing on salient lidar point cloud features. Finally, various fusion strategies are applied to fuse the modalities and temporal information into the architecture to assess its efficacy on performance and computational complexity. Overall, this thesis has established the importance and utility of multimodal systems for refined 3D object detection and proposed a complex pipeline incorporating spatial, temporal and attention mechanisms to improve specific, and general class accuracy demonstrated on key autonomous driving data sets
Application of Track Geometry Deterioration Modelling and Data Mining in Railway Asset Management
Modernin rautatiejärjestelmän hallinnassa rahankäyttö kohdistuu valtaosin nykyisen rataverkon korjauksiin ja parannuksiin ennemmin kuin uusien ratojen rakentamiseen. Nykyisen rataverkon kunnossapitotyöt aiheuttavat suurten kustannusten lisäksi myös usein liikennerajoitteita tai yhteyksien väliaikaisia sulkemisia, jotka heikentävät rataverkon käytettävyyttä Siispä oikea-aikainen ja pitkäaikaisia parannuksia aikaansaava kunnossapito ovat edellytyksiä kilpailukykyisille ja täsmällisille rautatiekuljetuksille. Tällainen kunnossapito vaatii vankan tietopohjan radan nykyisestä kunnosta päätöksenteon tueksi.
Ratainfran omistajat teettävät päätöksenteon tueksi useita erilaisia radan kuntoa kuvaavia mittauksia ja ylläpitävät kattavia omaisuustietorekistereitä. Kenties tärkein näistä datalähteistä on koneellisen radantarkastuksen tuottamat mittaustulokset, jotka kuvastavat radan geometrian kuntoa. Nämä mittaustulokset ovat tärkeitä, koska ne tuottavat luotettavaa kuntotietoa: mittaukset tehdään toistuvasti, 2–6 kertaa vuodessa Suomessa rataosasta riippuen, mittausvaunu pysyy useita vuosia samana, tulokset ovat hyvin toistettavia ja ne antavat hyvän yleiskuvan radan kunnosta. Vaikka laadukasta dataa on paljon saatavilla, käytännön omaisuudenhallinnassa on merkittäviä haasteita datan analysoinnissa, sillä vakiintuneita menetelmiä siihen on vähän. Käytännössä seurataan usein vain mittaustulosten raja-arvojen ylittymistä ja pyritään subjektiivisesti arvioimaan rakenteiden kunnon kehittymistä ja korjaustarpeita. Kehittyneen analytiikan puutteet estävät kuntotietojen laajamittaisen hyödyntämisen kunnossapidon suunnittelussa, mikä vaikeuttaa päätöksentekoa.
Tämän väitöskirjatutkimuksen päätavoitteita olivat kehittää ratageometrian heikkenemiseen mallintamismenetelmiä, soveltaa tiedonlouhintaa saatavilla olevan omaisuusdatan analysointiin sekä jalkauttaa kyseiset tutkimustulokset käytännön rataomaisuudenhallintaan. Ratageometrian heikkenemisen mallintamismenetelmien kehittämisessä keskityttiin tuottamaan nykyisin saatavilla olevasta datasta uutta tietoa radan kunnon kehityksestä, tehdyn kunnossapidon tehokkuudesta sekä tulevaisuuden kunnossapitotarpeista. Tiedonlouhintaa sovellettiin ratageometrian heikkenemisen juurisyiden selvittämiseen rataomaisuusdatan perusteella. Lopuksi hyödynnettiin kypsyysmalleja perustana ratageometrian heikkenemisen mallinnuksen ja rataomaisuusdatan analytiikan käytäntöön viennille.
Tutkimustulosten perusteella suomalainen radantarkastus- ja rataomaisuusdata olivat riittäviä tavoiteltuihin analyyseihin. Tulokset osoittivat, että robusti lineaarinen optimointi soveltuu hyvin suomalaisen rataverkon ratageometrian heikkenemisen mallinnukseen. Mallinnuksen avulla voidaan tuottaa tunnuslukuja, jotka kuvaavat rakenteen kuntoa, kunnossapidon tehokkuutta ja tulevaa kunnossapitotarvetta, sekä muodostaa havainnollistavia visualisointeja datasta. Rataomaisuusdatan eksploratiiviseen tiedonlouhintaan käytetyn GUHA-menetelmän avulla voitiin selvittää mielenkiintoisia ja vaikeasti havaittavia korrelaatioita datasta. Näiden tulosten avulla saatiin uusia havaintoja ongelmallisista ratarakennetyypeistä. Havaintojen avulla voitiin kohdentaa jatkotutkimuksia näihin rakenteisiin, mikä ei olisi ollut mahdollista, jollei tiedonlouhinnan avulla olisi ensin tunnistettu näitä rakennetyyppejä. Kypsyysmallin soveltamisen avulla luotiin puitteet ratageometrian heikkenemisen mallintamisen ja rataomaisuusdatan analytiikan kehitykselle Suomen rataomaisuuden hallinnassa. Kypsyysmalli tarjosi käytännöllisen tavan lähestyä tarvittavaa kehitystyötä, kun eteneminen voitiin jaotella neljään eri kypsyystasoon, jotka loivat selkeitä välitavoitteita. Kypsyysmallin ja asetettujen välitavoitteiden avulla kehitys on suunniteltua ja edistystä voidaan jaotella, mikä antaa edellytykset tämän laajamittaisen kehityksen onnistuneelle läpiviennille.
Tämän väitöskirjatutkimuksen tulokset osoittavat, miten nykyisin saatavilla olevasta datasta saadaan täysin uutta ja merkityksellistä tietoa, kun sitä käsitellään kehittyneen analytiikan avulla. Tämä väitöskirja tarjoaa datankäsittelyratkaisujen luomisen ja soveltamisen lisäksi myös keinoja niiden käytäntöönpanolle, sillä tietopohjaisen päätöksenteon todelliset hyödyt saavutetaan vasta käytännön radanpidossa.In the management of a modern European railway system, spending is predominantly allocated to maintaining and renewing the existing rail network rather than constructing completely new lines. In addition to major costs, the maintenance and renewals of the existing rail network often cause traffic restrictions or line closures, which decrease the usability of the rail network. Therefore, timely maintenance that achieves long-lasting improvements is imperative for achieving competitive and punctual rail traffic. This kind of maintenance requires a strong knowledge base for decision making regarding the current condition of track structures.
Track owners commission several different measurements that depict the condition of track structures and have comprehensive asset management data repositories. Perhaps one of the most important data sources is the track recording car measurement history, which depicts the condition of track geometry at different times. These measurement results are important because they offer a reliable condition database; the measurements are done recurrently, two to six times a year in Finland depending on the track section; the same recording car is used for many years; the results are repeatable; and they provide a good overall idea of the condition of track structures. However, although high-quality data is available, there are major challenges in analysing the data in practical asset management because there are few established methods for analytics. Practical asset management typically only monitors whether given threshold values are exceeded and subjectively assesses maintenance needs and development in the condition of track structures. The lack of advanced analytics prevents the full utilisation of the available data in maintenance planning which hinders decision making.
The main goals of this dissertation study were to develop track geometry deterioration modelling methods, apply data mining in analysing currently available railway asset data, and implement the results from these studies into practical railway asset management. The development of track geometry deterioration modelling methods focused on utilising currently available data for producing novel information on the development in the condition of track structures, past maintenance effectiveness, and future maintenance needs. Data mining was applied in investigating the root causes of track geometry deterioration based on asset data. Finally, maturity models were applied as the basis for implementing track geometry deterioration modelling and track asset data analytics into practice.
Based on the research findings, currently available Finnish measurement and asset data was sufficient for the desired analyses. For the Finnish track inspection data, robust linear optimisation was developed for track geometry deterioration modelling. The modelling provided key figures, which depict the condition of structures, maintenance effectiveness, and future maintenance needs. Moreover, visualisations were created from the modelling to enable the practical use of the modelling results. The applied exploratory data mining method, General Unary Hypotheses Automaton (GUHA), could find interesting and hard-to-detect correlations within asset data. With these correlations, novel observations on problematic track structure types were made. The observations could be utilised for allocating further research for problematic track structures, which would not have been possible without using data mining to identify these structures. The implementation of track geometry deterioration and asset data analytics into practice was approached by applying maturity models. The use of maturity models offered a practical way of approaching future development, as the development could be divided into four maturity levels, which created clear incremental goals for development. The maturity model and the incremental goals enabled wide-scale development planning, in which the progress can be segmented and monitored, which enhances successful project completion.
The results from these studies demonstrate how currently available data can be used to provide completely new and meaningful information, when advanced analytics are used. In addition to novel solutions for data analytics, this dissertation research also provided methods for implementing the solutions, as the true benefits of knowledge-based decision making are obtained in only practical railway asset management
Subsidiary Entrepreneurial Alertness: Antecedents and Outcomes
This thesis brings together concepts from both international business and entrepreneurship to develop a framework of the facilitators of subsidiary innovation and performance. This study proposes that Subsidiary Entrepreneurial Alertness (SEA) facilitates the recognition of opportunities (the origin of subsidiary initiatives). First introduced by Kirzner (1979) in the context of the individual, entrepreneurial alertness (EA) is the ability to notice an opportunity without actively searching. Similarly, to entrepreneurial alertness at the individual level, this study argues that SEA enables the subsidiary to best select opportunities based on resources available. The research further develops our conceptualisation of SEA by drawing on work by Tang et al. (2012) identifying three distinct activities of EA: scanning and search (identifying opportunities unseen by others due to their awareness gaps), association and connection of information, and evaluation and judgement to interpret or anticipate future viability of opportunities. This study then hypothesises that SEA leads to opportunity recognition at the subsidiary level and further hypothesises innovation and performance as outcomes of opportunity recognition. This research brings these arguments together to develop and test a comprehensive theoretical model.
The theoretical model is tested through a mail survey of the CEOs/MDs of foreign subsidiaries within the Republic of Ireland (an innovative hub for foreign subsidiaries). This method was selected as the best method to reach the targeted respondent, and due to the depth of knowledge the target respondent holds, the survey can answer the desired question more substantially. The results were examined using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). The study’s findings confirm two critical aspects of subsidiary context, subsidiary brokerage and subsidiary credibility are positively related to SEA. The study establishes a positive link between SEA and both the generation of innovation and the subsidiary’s performance. This thesis makes three significant contributions to the subsidiary literature as it 1) introduces and develops the concept of SEA, 2) identifies the antecedents of SEA, and 3) demonstrates the impact of SEA on subsidiary opportunity recognition. Implications for subsidiaries, headquarters and policy makers are discussed along with the limitations of the study
Bayesian Optimization with Conformal Prediction Sets
Bayesian optimization is a coherent, ubiquitous approach to decision-making
under uncertainty, with applications including multi-arm bandits, active
learning, and black-box optimization. Bayesian optimization selects decisions
(i.e. objective function queries) with maximal expected utility with respect to
the posterior distribution of a Bayesian model, which quantifies reducible,
epistemic uncertainty about query outcomes. In practice, subjectively
implausible outcomes can occur regularly for two reasons: 1) model
misspecification and 2) covariate shift. Conformal prediction is an uncertainty
quantification method with coverage guarantees even for misspecified models and
a simple mechanism to correct for covariate shift. We propose conformal
Bayesian optimization, which directs queries towards regions of search space
where the model predictions have guaranteed validity, and investigate its
behavior on a suite of black-box optimization tasks and tabular ranking tasks.
In many cases we find that query coverage can be significantly improved without

INVESTIGATING THE PERCEPTION OF EXPATRIATES TOWARDS IMMIGRATION SERVICE QUALITY IN SHARJAH, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES THROUGH MIXED METHOD APPROACH
The public sectors in UAE are under immense pressure to demonstrate that their services are customer-focused and that continuous performance improvement is being delivered. The United Arab Emirates is a favoured destination for expatriates due to its own citizens form a minority of the population and are barely represented in the private sector workforce. These highly unusual demographics confer high importance on the national immigration services. Recently, increased interest in international migration, specifically within the United Arab Emirates, has been shown both by government agencies and by the governments of industrialised countries. Given the importance of the expatriate labour force to economic stability and growth in the Emirates, this research investigates how immigration services are perceived, with the aim of contributing to their improvement, thus ultimately supporting economic growth. It proposes a service quality perception framework to improve understanding within SID of how to raise levels of service delivered to migrants and other persons directly or indirectly affected by SID services.
Qualitative data were collected by means of semi-structured interviews and quantitative data by means of a questionnaire survey based on the abovementioned framework. The survey data, on the variables influencing participants’ experiences and perceptions of SID services, were subjected to statistical analysis. The framework was then used to evaluate quality of service in terms of general impressions, delivery, location, response, SID culture and behaviour. Numerical data were analysed using inferential and descriptive statistics. It was found that service quality positively influenced service behaviour and that this relationship was mediated by SID culture.
This research makes an original contribution to knowledge as one of the few studies of immigration to the United Arab Emirates. By examining the workings of one immigration department, it adds to the literature on immigration departments and organisational development in developing countries. It illuminates the mechanics of immigration services and demonstrates their increasing importance to the world economy
Um modelo para suporte automatizado ao reconhecimento, extração, personalização e reconstrução de gráficos estáticos
Data charts are widely used in our daily lives, being present in regular media,
such as newspapers, magazines, web pages, books, and many others. A well constructed
data chart leads to an intuitive understanding of its underlying data
and in the same way, when data charts have wrong design choices, a redesign
of these representations might be needed. However, in most cases, these
charts are shown as a static image, which means that the original data are not
usually available. Therefore, automatic methods could be applied to extract the
underlying data from the chart images to allow these changes. The task of
recognizing charts and extracting data from them is complex, largely due to the
variety of chart types and their visual characteristics.
Computer Vision techniques for image classification and object detection are
widely used for the problem of recognizing charts, but only in images without
any disturbance. Other features in real-world images that can make this task
difficult are not present in most literature works, like photo distortions, noise,
alignment, etc. Two computer vision techniques that can assist this task and
have been little explored in this context are perspective detection and
correction. These methods transform a distorted and noisy chart in a clear
chart, with its type ready for data extraction or other uses. The task of
reconstructing data is straightforward, as long the data is available the
visualization can be reconstructed, but the scenario of reconstructing it on the
same context is complex.
Using a Visualization Grammar for this scenario is a key component, as these
grammars usually have extensions for interaction, chart layers, and multiple
views without requiring extra development effort.
This work presents a model for automated support for custom recognition, and
reconstruction of charts in images. The model automatically performs the
process steps, such as reverse engineering, turning a static chart back into its
data table for later reconstruction, while allowing the user to make modifications
in case of uncertainties. This work also features a model-based architecture
along with prototypes for various use cases. Validation is performed step by
step, with methods inspired by the literature. This work features three use
cases providing proof of concept and validation of the model.
The first use case features usage of chart recognition methods focused on
documents in the real-world, the second use case focus on vocalization of
charts, using a visualization grammar to reconstruct a chart in audio format,
and the third use case presents an Augmented Reality application that
recognizes and reconstructs charts in the same context (a piece of paper)
overlaying the new chart and interaction widgets. The results showed that with
slight changes, chart recognition and reconstruction methods are now ready for
real-world charts, when taking time, accuracy and precision into consideration.Os gráficos de dados são amplamente utilizados na nossa vida diária, estando
presentes nos meios de comunicação regulares, tais como jornais, revistas,
páginas web, livros, e muitos outros. Um gráfico bem construído leva a uma
compreensão intuitiva dos seus dados inerentes e da mesma forma, quando
os gráficos de dados têm escolhas de conceção erradas, poderá ser
necessário um redesenho destas representações. Contudo, na maioria dos
casos, estes gráficos são mostrados como uma imagem estática, o que
significa que os dados originais não estão normalmente disponíveis. Portanto,
poderiam ser aplicados métodos automáticos para extrair os dados inerentes
das imagens dos gráficos, a fim de permitir estas alterações. A tarefa de
reconhecer os gráficos e extrair dados dos mesmos é complexa, em grande
parte devido à variedade de tipos de gráficos e às suas características visuais.
As técnicas de Visão Computacional para classificação de imagens e deteção
de objetos são amplamente utilizadas para o problema de reconhecimento de
gráficos, mas apenas em imagens sem qualquer ruído. Outras características
das imagens do mundo real que podem dificultar esta tarefa não estão
presentes na maioria das obras literárias, como distorções fotográficas, ruído,
alinhamento, etc. Duas técnicas de visão computacional que podem ajudar
nesta tarefa e que têm sido pouco exploradas neste contexto são a deteção e
correção da perspetiva. Estes métodos transformam um gráfico distorcido e
ruidoso em um gráfico limpo, com o seu tipo pronto para extração de dados
ou outras utilizações. A tarefa de reconstrução de dados é simples, desde que
os dados estejam disponíveis a visualização pode ser reconstruída, mas o
cenário de reconstrução no mesmo contexto é complexo.
A utilização de uma Gramática de Visualização para este cenário é um
componente chave, uma vez que estas gramáticas têm normalmente
extensões para interação, camadas de gráficos, e visões múltiplas sem exigir
um esforço extra de desenvolvimento.
Este trabalho apresenta um modelo de suporte automatizado para o
reconhecimento personalizado, e reconstrução de gráficos em imagens
estáticas. O modelo executa automaticamente as etapas do processo, tais
como engenharia inversa, transformando um gráfico estático novamente na
sua tabela de dados para posterior reconstrução, ao mesmo tempo que
permite ao utilizador fazer modificações em caso de incertezas. Este trabalho
também apresenta uma arquitetura baseada em modelos, juntamente com
protótipos para vários casos de utilização. A validação é efetuada passo a
passo, com métodos inspirados na literatura. Este trabalho apresenta três
casos de uso, fornecendo prova de conceito e validação do modelo.
O primeiro caso de uso apresenta a utilização de métodos de reconhecimento
de gráficos focando em documentos no mundo real, o segundo caso de uso
centra-se na vocalização de gráficos, utilizando uma gramática de visualização
para reconstruir um gráfico em formato áudio, e o terceiro caso de uso
apresenta uma aplicação de Realidade Aumentada que reconhece e reconstrói
gráficos no mesmo contexto (um pedaço de papel) sobrepondo os novos
gráficos e widgets de interação. Os resultados mostraram que com pequenas
alterações, os métodos de reconhecimento e reconstrução dos gráficos estão
agora prontos para os gráficos do mundo real, tendo em consideração o

After Creation: Intergovernmental Organizations and Member State Governments as Co-Participants in an Authority Relationship
This is a re-amalgamation of what started as one manuscript and became two when the length proved to be more than any publisher wanted to consider. The splitting consisted of removing what are now Parts 3, 4, and 5 so that the manuscript focused on the outcome-related shared beliefs holding an authority relationship together. Those parts were last worked on in 2018. The rest were last worked on in late 2021 but also remain incomplete.
The relational approach adopted in this study treats intergovernmental organizations and the governments of member states as co-participants in an authority relationship with the governments of their member states. Authority relationships link two types of actor, defined by their authority-holder or addressee role in the relationship, through a set of shared beliefs about why the relationship exists and how the participants should fulfill their respective roles. The IGO as authority holder has a role that includes a right to instruct other actors about what they should or should not do; the governments of member states as addressees are expected to comply with the instructions. Three sets of shared beliefs provide the conceptual “glue” holding the relationship together. The first defines the goal of the collective effort, providing both the rationale for having the authority relationship and providing a lode star for assessments of the collective effort’s success or lack of success. The second set defines the shared understanding about allocation of roles and the process of interaction by establishing shared expectations about a) the selection process by which particular actors acquire authority holder roles, b) the definitions identifying one or more categories of addressees expected to follow instructions, and c) the procedures through which the authority holder issues instructions. The third set focus on the outcomes of cooperation through the relationship by defining a) the substantive areas in which the authority holder may issue instructions, b) the bases for assessing the relevance actions mandated in instructions for reaching the goal, and c) the relative efficacy of action paths chosen for reaching the goal as compared to other possible action paths.
Using an authority relationship framework for analyzing cooperation through IGOs highlights the inherently bi-directional nature of IGO-member government activity by viewing their interaction as involving a three-step process in which the IGO as authority holder decides when to issue what instruction, the member state governments as followers react to the instruction with anything from prompt and full compliance through various forms of pushback to outright rejection, and the IGO as authority holder responds to how the followers react with efforts to increase individual compliance with instructions and reinforce continuing acceptance of the authority relationship. Foregrounding the dynamics produced by the interaction of these two streams of perception and action reveals more clearly how far intergovernmental organizations acquire capacity to operate as independent actors, the dynamic ways they maintain that capacity, and how much they influence member governments’ beliefs and actions at different times. The approach fosters better understanding of why, when, and for how long governments choose cooperation through an IGO even in periods of rising unilateralism
