    Linearized large signal modeling, analysis, and control design of phase-controlled series-parallel resonant converters using state feedback

    This paper proposes a linearized large signal state-space model for the fixed-frequency phase-controlled series-parallel resonant converter. The proposed model utilizes state feedback of the output filter inductor current to perform linearization. The model combines multiple-frequency and average state-space modeling techniques to generate an aggregate model with dc state variables that are relatively easier to control and slower than the fast resonant tank dynamics. The main objective of the linearized model is to provide a linear representation of the converter behavior under large signal variation which is suitable for faster simulation and large signal estimation/calculation of the converter state variables. The model also provides insight into converter dynamics as well as a simplified reduced order transfer function for PI closed-loop design. Experimental and simulation results from a detailed switched converter model are compared with the proposed state-space model output to verify its accuracy and robustness

    Self-Commissioning of Inverter Nonlinear Effects in AC Drives

    The paper presents a novel technique for an accurate identification of the inverter nonlinear effects, such as the dead-time and on-state voltage drops. The proposed technique is very simple and it is based only on a current control scheme. If the inverter load is an AC motor, the inverter effects can be identified at drive startup using as measured quantities the motor currents and the inverter DC link voltage. The identified inverter error is stored in a Look-Up Table (LUT) that can be subsequently used by the vector control algorithm.     Impact of PWM strategies on RMS current of the DC-link Voltage Capacitor of a dual-three phase drive

    The major drawback of usual dual three-phase AC machines, when supplied by a Voltage Source Inverter (VSI), is the occurrence of extra harmonic currents which circulate in the stator windings causing additional losses and constraints on the power component. This paper compares dedicated Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) strategies used for controlling a dual three phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous machine supplied by a six-leg VSI. Since the application is intended for low-voltage (48V) mild-hybrid automotive traction, an additional major constraint arises: the compactness of the drive related to the size of the DC-bus capacitor. Thus, the PWM strategy must be chosen by taking into consideration its impact on both, the motor and the RMS value of DC-bus current

    Power Quality Enhancement in Hybrid Photovoltaic-Battery System based on three–Level Inverter associated with DC bus Voltage Control

    This modest paper presents a study on the energy quality produced by a hybrid system consisting of a Photovoltaic (PV) power source connected to a battery. A three-level inverter was used in the system studied for the purpose of improving the quality of energy injected into the grid and decreasing the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). A Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm based on a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) is used for the purpose of ensuring optimal production of photovoltaic energy. In addition, another FLC controller is used to ensure DC bus stabilization. The considered system was implemented in the Matlab /SimPowerSystems environment. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed inverter at three levels in improving the quality of energy injected from the system into the grid.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

    Modeling Inverter Losses for Circuit Simulation

    Transformer-like inverter models can represent a very good alternative to common switch-diode models for simulation, reducing convergence problems and/or calculation time. They may also provide easier insight into the converter operation and power loss effects, at least from the point of view of the applicants, aiding for design and teaching purposes. The paper shows how conduction and switching losses can be incorporated in the transformer-like inverter model in a simple and intuitive way, which requires very few parameters and allows for separate modeling of lossless behavior, conduction losses and the switching losses. Loss models are proposed in some versions differing for the accuracy and simulation easiness. In any case, the resulting inverter lossy model is very compact and can be implemented by just a pair of nonlinear controlled sources as basic building blocks, available in any circuit simulation program, as the free of charge and widely used PSpice student version

    Experimental High-Frequency Parameter Identification of AC Electrical Motors

    In order to predict conducted electromagnetic interference in inverter-motor drive systems, high-frequency (HF) motor models are requested and the involved parameters have to be available. In previous studies, the authors have presented an accurate HF model for induction motors and they have defined the procedures to identify the model parameters. In this paper, these results are extended to several types and sizes of industrial ac motors such as induction, synchronous reluctance (without interior permanent magnets), and brushless motors. The model parameter-identification procedure has been improved, and it is based on a least-squares data fitting applied to the measured magnitude and phase-frequency-response curves of the phase-to-ground and the phase-to-neutral impedances. The aim of this paper is to provide quick indications to select the suitable values of the HF model parameters, with reference to the size and type of the ac motor, to evaluate the HF voltage and current components in inverted-fed ac motor system

    An investigation into reducing the spindle acceleration energy consumption of machine tools

    Machine tools are widely used in the manufacturing industry, and consume large amount of energy. Spindle acceleration appears frequently while machine tools are working. It produces power peak which is highly energy intensive. As a result, a considerable amount of energy is consumed by this acceleration during the use phase of machine tools. However, there is still a lack of understanding of the energy consumption of spindle acceleration. Therefore, this research aims to model the spindle acceleration energy consumption of computer numerical control (CNC) lathes, and to investigate potential approaches to reduce this part of consumption. The proposed model is based on the principle of spindle motor control and includes the calculation of moment of inertia for spindle drive system. Experiments are carried out based on a CNC lathe to validate the proposed model. The approaches for reducing the spindle acceleration energy consumption were developed. On the machine level, the approaches include avoiding unnecessary stopping and restarting of the spindle, shortening the acceleration time, lightweight design, proper use and maintenance of the spindle. On the system level, a machine tool selection criterion is developed for energy saving. Results show that the energy can be reduced by 10.6% to more than 50% using these approaches, most of which are practical and easy to implement

    Modeling a Grid-Connected PV/Battery Microgrid System with MPPT Controller

    This paper focuses on performance analyzing and dynamic modeling of the current grid-tied fixed array 6.84kW solar photovoltaic system located at Florida Atlantic University (FAU). A battery energy storage system is designed and applied to improve the systems stability and reliability. An overview of the entire system and its PV module are presented. In sequel, the corresponding I-V and P-V curves are obtained using MATLAB-Simulink package. Actual data was collected and utilized for the modeling and simulation of the system. In addition, a grid- connected PV/Battery system with Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) controller is modeled to analyze the system performance that has been evaluated under two different test conditions: (1) PV power production is higher than the load demand (2) PV generated power is less than required load. A battery system has also been sized to provide smoothing services to this array. The simulation results show the effective of the proposed method.     Vectorial formalism for analysis and design of polyphase synchronous machines

    A vectorial formalism for analysis and design of polyphase synchronous machines without reluctance and saturation effects is described. We prove the equivalence of such a machine with a set of magnetically independent machines, which are electrically and mechanically coupled. Specific problems of polyphase machines can thus be favorably analyzed with this concept. Rules of conception and constraints on electric supply can be deduced. Moreover the vectorial approach, which generalizes the complex phasor method, can also be used to control n-leg Voltage Source Inverters.
