Human Associations Help to Detect Conventionalized Multiword Expressions
In this paper we show that if we want to obtain human evidence about
conventionalization of some phrases, we should ask native speakers about
associations they have to a given phrase and its component words. We have shown
that if component words of a phrase have each other as frequent associations,
then this phrase can be considered as conventionalized. Another type of
conventionalized phrases can be revealed using two factors: low entropy of
phrase associations and low intersection of component word and phrase
associations. The association experiments were performed for the Russian
language
A Study of Metrics of Distance and Correlation Between Ranked Lists for Compositionality Detection
Compositionality in language refers to how much the meaning of some phrase
can be decomposed into the meaning of its constituents and the way these
constituents are combined. Based on the premise that substitution by synonyms
is meaning-preserving, compositionality can be approximated as the semantic
similarity between a phrase and a version of that phrase where words have been
replaced by their synonyms. Different ways of representing such phrases exist
(e.g., vectors [1] or language models [2]), and the choice of representation
affects the measurement of semantic similarity.
We propose a new compositionality detection method that represents phrases as
ranked lists of term weights. Our method approximates the semantic similarity
between two ranked list representations using a range of well-known distance
and correlation metrics. In contrast to most state-of-the-art approaches in
compositionality detection, our method is completely unsupervised. Experiments
with a publicly available dataset of 1048 human-annotated phrases shows that,
compared to strong supervised baselines, our approach provides superior
measurement of compositionality using any of the distance and correlation
metrics considered
An Ontology-Based Method for Extracting and Classifying Domain-Specific Compositional Nominal Compounds
In this paper, we present our preliminary study on an ontology-based method to extract and classify compositional nominal compounds in specific domains of knowledge. This method is based on the assumption that, applying a conceptual model to represent knowledge domain, it is possible to improve the extraction and classification of lexicon occurrences for that domain in a semi-automatic way. We explore the possibility of extracting and classifying a specific construction type (nominal compounds) spanning a specific domain (Cultural Heritage) and a specific language (Italian)
Multiword expressions in Russian thesauri RuThes and RuWordnet
© 2016 FRUCT.We present the types or multiword expressions included into the thesaurus or Russian language RuThes. Maoy of these expressions may look like compositiomd expressions but have specific relations that can be useful in appllcatlons. The rela· tion system or the RuThes thesaurus allows natural description of relations between an expression and its components if necessary. Transforming the RnThes knowledge into the Princeton WordNet structure for creating Russian wordnet (RuWordNet), we tronsfer also all the described expressions into the new resource and propose to automatically introduce additional relations for their better representation
The role of constituents in multiword expressions: An interdisciplinary, cross-lingual perspective
Multiword expressions (MWEs), such as noun compounds (e.g. nickname in English, and Ohrwurm in German), complex verbs (e.g. give up in English, and aufgeben in German) and idioms (e.g. break the ice in English, and das Eis brechen in German), may be interpreted literally but often undergo meaning shifts with respect to their constituents. Theoretical, psycholinguistic as well as computational linguistic research remain puzzled by when and how MWEs receive literal vs. meaning-shifted interpretations, what the contributions of the MWE constituents are to the degree of semantic transparency (i.e., meaning compositionality) of the MWE, and how literal vs. meaning-shifted MWEs are processed and computed. This edited volume presents an interdisciplinary selection of seven papers on recent findings across linguistic, psycholinguistic, corpus-based and computational research fields and perspectives, discussing the interaction of constituent properties and MWE meanings, and how MWE constituents contribute to the processing and representation of MWEs. The collection is based on a workshop at the 2017 annual conference of the German Linguistic Society (DGfS) that took place at Saarland University in Saarbrücken, German
