Resource Allocation for Network-Integrated Device-to-Device Communications Using Smart Relays
With increasing number of autonomous heterogeneous devices in future mobile
networks, an efficient resource allocation scheme is required to maximize
network throughput and achieve higher spectral efficiency. In this paper,
performance of network-integrated device-to-device (D2D) communication is
investigated where D2D traffic is carried through relay nodes. An optimization
problem is formulated for allocating radio resources to maximize end-to-end
rate as well as conversing QoS requirements for cellular and D2D user equipment
under total power constraint. Numerical results show that there is a distance
threshold beyond which relay-assisted D2D communication significantly improves
network performance when compared to direct communication between D2D peers
A self-organized resource allocation scheme for heterogeneous macro-femto networks
This paper investigates the radio resource management (RRM) issues in a heterogeneous macro-femto network. The objective of femto deployment is to improve coverage, capacity, and experienced quality of service of indoor users. The location and density of user-deployed femtos is not known a-priori. This makes interference management crucial. In particular, with co-channel allocation (to improve resource utilization efficiency), RRM becomes involved because of both cross-layer and co-layer interference. In this paper, we review the resource allocation strategies available in the literature for heterogeneous macro-femto network. Then, we propose a self-organized resource allocation (SO-RA) scheme for an orthogonal frequency division multiple access based macro-femto network to mitigate co-layer interference in the downlink transmission. We compare its performance with the existing schemes like Reuse-1, adaptive frequency reuse (AFR), and AFR with power control (one of our proposed modification to AFR approach) in terms of 10 percentile user throughput and fairness to femto users. The performance of AFR with power control scheme matches closely with Reuse-1, while the SO-RA scheme achieves improved throughput and fairness performance. SO-RA scheme ensures minimum throughput guarantee to all femto users and exhibits better performance than the existing state-of-the-art resource allocation schemes
A Comprehensive Survey of Potential Game Approaches to Wireless Networks
Potential games form a class of non-cooperative games where unilateral
improvement dynamics are guaranteed to converge in many practical cases. The
potential game approach has been applied to a wide range of wireless network
problems, particularly to a variety of channel assignment problems. In this
paper, the properties of potential games are introduced, and games in wireless
networks that have been proven to be potential games are comprehensively
discussed.Comment: 44 pages, 6 figures, to appear in IEICE Transactions on

Distributed Artificial Intelligence Solution for D2D Communication in 5G Networks
Device to Device (D2D) Communication is one of the technology components of
the evolving 5G architecture, as it promises improvements in energy efficiency,
spectral efficiency, overall system capacity, and higher data rates. The above
noted improvements in network performance spearheaded a vast amount of research
in D2D, which have identified significant challenges that need to be addressed
before realizing their full potential in emerging 5G Networks. Towards this
end, this paper proposes the use of a distributed intelligent approach to
control the generation of D2D networks. More precisely, the proposed approach
uses Belief-Desire-Intention (BDI) intelligent agents with extended
capabilities (BDIx) to manage each D2D node independently and autonomously,
without the help of the Base Station. The paper includes detailed algorithmic
description for the decision of transmission mode, which maximizes the data
rate, minimizes the power consumptions, while taking into consideration the
computational load. Simulations show the applicability of BDI agents in jointly
solving D2D challenges.Comment: 10 pages,9 figure
