    The NASA SBIR product catalog

    The purpose of this catalog is to assist small business firms in making the community aware of products emerging from their efforts in the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. It contains descriptions of some products that have advanced into Phase 3 and others that are identified as prospective products. Both lists of products in this catalog are based on information supplied by NASA SBIR contractors in responding to an invitation to be represented in this document. Generally, all products suggested by the small firms were included in order to meet the goals of information exchange for SBIR results. Of the 444 SBIR contractors NASA queried, 137 provided information on 219 products. The catalog presents the product information in the technology areas listed in the table of contents. Within each area, the products are listed in alphabetical order by product name and are given identifying numbers. Also included is an alphabetical listing of the companies that have products described. This listing cross-references the product list and provides information on the business activity of each firm. In addition, there are three indexes: one a list of firms by states, one that lists the products according to NASA Centers that managed the SBIR projects, and one that lists the products by the relevant Technical Topics utilized in NASA's annual program solicitation under which each SBIR project was selected

    Automated visual inspection for the quality control of pad printing

    Pad printing is used to decorate consumer goods largely because of its unique ability to apply graphics to doubly curved surfaces. The Intelpadrint project was conceived to develop a better understanding of the process and new printing pads, inks and printers. The thesis deals primarily with the research of a printer control system including machine vision. At present printing is manually controlled. Operator knowledge was gathered for use by an expert system to control the process. A novel local corner- matching algorithm was conceived to effect image segmentation, and neuro-fuzzy techniques were used to recognise patterns in printing errors. Non-linear Finite Element Analysis of the rubber printing-pad led to a method for pre-distorting artwork so that it would print undistorted on a curved product. A flexible, more automated printer was developed that achieves a higher printing rate. Ultraviolet-cured inks with improved printability were developed. The image normalisation/ error-signalling stage in inspection was proven in isolation, as was the pattern recognition system

    223 p.This thesis studies anomaly detection in industrial systems using technologies from the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), such as the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, 3D Printing, and Augmented Reality. The goal is to provide tools that can be used in real-world scenarios to detect system anomalies, intending to improve production and maintenance processes. The thesis investigates the applicability and implementation of 4IR technology architectures, AI-driven machine learning systems, and advanced visualization tools to support decision-making based on the detection of anomalies. The work covers a range of topics, including the conception of a 4IR system based on a generic architecture, the design of a data acquisition system for analysis and modelling, the creation of ensemble supervised and semi-supervised models for anomaly detection, the detection of anomalies through frequency analysis, and the visualization of associated data using Visual Analytics. The results show that the proposed methodology for integrating anomaly detection systems in new or existing industries is valid and that combining 4IR architectures, ensemble machine learning models, and Visual Analytics tools significantly enhances theanomaly detection processes for industrial systems. Furthermore, the thesis presents a guiding framework for data engineers and end-users

    A Methodological Approach to Knowledge-Based Engineering Systems for Manufacturing

    A survey of implementations of the knowledge-based engineering approach in different technological sectors is presented. The main objectives and techniques of examined applications are pointed out to illustrate the trends and peculiarities for a number of manufacturing field. Existing methods for the development of these engineering systems are then examined in order to identify critical aspects when applied to manufacturing. A new methodological approach is proposed to overcome some specific limitations that emerged from the above-mentioned survey. The aim is to provide an innovative method for the implementation of knowledge-based engineering applications in the field of industrial production. As a starting point, the field of application of the system is defined using a spatial representation. The conceptual design phase is carried out with the aid of a matrix structure containing the most relevant elements of the system and their relations. In particular, objectives, descriptors, inputs and actions are defined and qualified using categorical attributes. The proposed method is then applied to three case studies with different locations in the applicability space. All the relevant elements of the detailed implementation of these systems are described. The relations with assumptions made during the design are highlighted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The adoption of case studies with notably different applications also reveals the versatility in the application of the method

    Novel analysis and modelling methodologies applied to pultrusion and other processes

    Often a manufacturing process may be a bottleneck or critical to a business. This thesis focuses on the analysis and modelling of such processest, to both better understand them, and to support the enhancement of quality or output capability of the process. The main thrusts of this thesis therefore are: To model inter-process physics, inter-relationships, and complex processes in a manner that enables re-exploitation, re-interpretation and reuse of this knowledge and generic elements e.g. using Object Oriented (00) & Qualitative Modelling (QM) techniques. This involves the development of superior process models to capture process complexity and reuse any generic elements; To demonstrate advanced modelling and simulation techniques (e.g. Artificial Neural Networks(ANN), Rule-Based-Systems (RBS), and statistical modelling) on a number of complex manufacturing case studies; To gain a better understanding of the physics and process inter-relationships exhibited in a number of complex manufacturing processes (e.g. pultrusion, bioprocess, and logistics) using analysis and modelling. To these ends, both a novel Object Oriented Qualitative (Problem) Analysis (OOQA) methodology, and a novel Artificial Neural Network Process Modelling (ANNPM) methodology were developed and applied to a number of complex manufacturing case studies- thermoset and thermoplastic pultrusion, bioprocess reactor, and a logistics supply chain. It has been shown that these methodologies and the models developed support capture of complex process inter-relationships, enable reuse of generic elements, support effective variable selection for ANN models, and perform well as a predictor of process properties. In particular the ANN pultrusion models, using laboratory data from IKV, Aachen and Pera, Melton Mowbray, predicted product properties very well

    Condition-based maintenance of wind turbine blades

    The blades of offshore wind farms (OWTs) are susceptible to a wide variety of diverse sources of damage. Internal impacts are caused primarily by structure deterioration, so even though outer consequences are the consequence of harsh marine ecosystems. We examine condition-based maintenance (CBM) for a multiblade OWT system that is exposed to environmental shocks in this work. In recent years, there has been a significant rise in the number of wind turbines operating offshore that make use of CBMs. The gearbox, generator, and drive train all have their own vibration-based monitoring systems, which form most of their foundation. For the blades, drive train, tower, and foundation, a cost analysis of the various widely viable CBM systems as well as their individual prices has been done. The purpose of this article is to investigate the potential benefits that may result from using these supplementary systems in the maintenance strategy. Along with providing a theoretical foundation, this article reviews the previous research that has been conducted on CBM of OWT blades. Utilizing the data collected from condition monitoring, an artificial neural network is employed to provide predictions on the remaining life. For the purpose of assessing and forecasting the cost and efficacy of CBM, a simple tool that is based on artificial neural networks (ANN) has been developed. A CBM technique that is well-established and is based on data from condition monitoring is used to reduce cost of maintenance. This can be accomplished by reducing malfunctions, cutting down on service interruption, and reducing the number of unnecessary maintenance works. In MATLAB, an ANN is used to research both the failure replacement cost and the preventative maintenance cost. In addition to this, a technique for optimization is carried out to gain the optimal threshold values. There is a significant opportunity to save costs by improving how choices are made on maintenance to make the operations more cost-effective. In this research, a technique to optimizing CBM program for elements whose deterioration may be characterized according to the level of damage that it has sustained is presented. The strategy may be used for maintenance that is based on inspections as well as maintenance that is based on online condition monitoring systems

    The objectives of 346 projects placed under contract by the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are described. These projects were selected competitively from among proposals submitted to NASA in response to the 1992 SBIR Program Solicitation. The basic document consists of edited, non-proprietary abstracts of the winning proposals submitted by small businesses. The abstracts are presented under the 15 technical topics within which Phase 1 proposals were solicited. Each project was assigned a sequential identifying number from 001 to 346, in order of its appearance in the body of the report. Appendixes to provide additional information about the SBIR program and permit cross-reference of the 1992 Phase 1 projects by company name, location by state, principal investigator, NASA Field Center responsible for management of each project, and NASA contract number are included
