    An Approach for Service Oriented Discovery and Retrieval of Spatial Data

    ABSTRACT Successful information integration and sharing data across disparate systems and designs are required for fast access to and interpretation of many types of geospatial information. Spatial data are highly heterogeneous -not only they differ from data representation and storage methods, but they also differ in the way of querying the data. Finding and accessing spatial data in an environment like this is a crucial task. Enterprise geographic information system (E-GIS) is an organization-wide approach to GIS implementation, operation, and management. The main focus of the paper is to integrate diverse spatial data repositories for geographic applications using service-based methodology. We have adopted service-oriented architecture (SOA) for the discovery and retrieval of geospatial data. The architecture uses a central ontology as metadata information, which acts as service broker. Ontology-based discovery and retrieval of geographic data solves the problem of semantic heterogeneity, the major bottleneck for spatial interoperability. The implementation is in compliant with the Web Map Service (WMS) and Web Feature Service (WFS), the web service standards proposed by OGC. The need for loosely coupled service-based access of data in the spatial domain has been exploited. A query processing mechanism in distributed environment of spatial data sources has been discussed at the end. The proposed system has been implemented and fully tested

    A Linked Data representation of the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics

    The recent publication of public sector information (PSI) data sets has brought to the attention of the scientific community the redundant presence of location based context. At the same time it stresses the inadequacy of current Linked Data services for exploiting the semantics of such contextual dimensions for easing entity retrieval and browsing. In this paper describes our approach for supporting the publication of geographical subdivisions in Linked Data format for supporting the e-government and public sector in publishing their data sets. The topological knowledge published can be reused in order to enrich the geographical context of other data sets, in particular we propose an exploitation scenario using statistical data sets described with the SCOVO ontology. The topological knowledge is then exploited within a service that supports the navigation and retrieval of statistical geographical entities for the EU territory. Geographical entities, in the extent of this paper, are linked data resources that describe objects that have a geographical extension. The data and services presented in this paper allows the discovery of resources that contain or are contained by a given entity URI and their representation within map widgets. We present an approach for a geography based service that helps in querying qualitative spatial relations for the EU statistical geography (proper containment so far). We also provide a rationale for publishing geographical information in Linked Data format based on our experience, within the EnAKTing project, in publishing UK PSI data

    i-JEN: Visual interactive Malaysia crime news retrieval system

    Supporting crime news investigation involves a mechanism to help monitor the current and past status of criminal events. We believe this could be well facilitated by focusing on the user interfaces and the event crime model aspects. In this paper we discuss on a development of Visual Interactive Malaysia Crime News Retrieval System (i-JEN) and describe the approach, user studies and planned, the system architecture and future plan. Our main objectives are to construct crime-based event; investigate the use of crime-based event in improving the classification and clustering; develop an interactive crime news retrieval system; visualize crime news in an effective and interactive way; integrate them into a usable and robust system and evaluate the usability and system performance. The system will serve as a news monitoring system which aims to automatically organize, retrieve and present the crime news in such a way as to support an effective monitoring, searching, and browsing for the target users groups of general public, news analysts and policemen or crime investigators. The study will contribute to the better understanding of the crime data consumption in the Malaysian context as well as the developed system with the visualisation features to address crime data and the eventual goal of combating the crimes

    A Framework for Semantic Interoperability for Distributed Geospatial Repositories

    Interoperable access of geospatial information across disparate geospatial applications has become essential. Geospatial data are highly heterogeneous -- the heterogeneity arises both at the syntactic and semantic levels. Finding and accessing appropriate data in such a distributed environment is an important research issue. The paper proposes a methodology for interoperable access of geospatial information based on Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) specified standards. An architecture for integrating diverse geospatial data repositories has been proposed using service-based methodology. The semantic issues for discovery and retrieval of geospatial data over distributed geospatial services have also been proposed in the paper. The proposed architecture utilizes the ontological concepts for service description and subsequent discovery of services.
