Multisite adaptive computation offloading for mobile cloud applications
The sheer amount of mobile devices and their fast adaptability have contributed to the proliferation of modern advanced mobile applications. These applications have characteristics such as latency-critical and demand high availability. Also, these kinds of applications often require intensive computation resources and excessive energy consumption for processing, a mobile device has limited computation and energy capacity because of the physical size constraints.
The heterogeneous mobile cloud environment consists of different computing resources such as remote cloud servers in faraway data centres, cloudlets whose goal is to bring the cloud closer to the users, and nearby mobile devices that can be utilised to offload mobile tasks. Heterogeneity in mobile devices and the different sites include software, hardware, and technology variations. Resource-constrained mobile devices can leverage the shared resource environment to offload their intensive tasks to conserve battery life and improve the overall application performance. However, with such a loosely coupled and mobile device dominating network, new challenges and problems such as how to seamlessly leverage mobile devices with all the offloading sites, how to simplify deploying runtime environment for serving offloading requests from mobile devices, how to identify which parts of the mobile application to offload and how to decide whether to offload them and how to select the most optimal candidate offloading site among others.
To overcome the aforementioned challenges, this research work contributes the design and implementation of MAMoC, a loosely coupled end-to-end mobile computation offloading framework. Mobile applications can be adapted to the client library of the framework while the server components are deployed to the offloading sites for serving offloading requests. The evaluation of the offloading decision engine demonstrates the viability of the proposed solution for managing seamless and transparent offloading in distributed and dynamic mobile cloud environments. Cognitive virtual ad hoc mobile cloud-based networking architecture
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University LondonThis thesis proposed cognitive techniques and intelligent algorithms that offered adaptive and advanced facilities to cloud-based networking by using Virtual Ad Hoc Mobile Cloud Computing Networks architecture (VAMCCNs). This is presented as a working case to address their global network challenges and to add cognitive support to the network design and implementation for better meeting traffic management and application requirements in mission objectives. The thesis concentrates on three main contributions.
Firstly, an adaptive model, namely: a Heterogeneous Mobile Cloud Computing Network (HMCCN), was proposed to integrate different cloud networks architectures into one workflow. The cognitive data offloading task and the routing decision methods were applied using two different approaches: Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy system (FAH) as a first approach and cognitive Software Defined Network (SDN) model as a second centralised approach. Experimental results show improvement in network reliability and throughputs, minimised in both nodes’ energy consumption and network latency with efficient intelligent data load balance and network resources allocation with best cloud model selection.
Secondly, based on a virtual Ad Hoc cloud network with a realistic Random Waypoint Motion (RWM) model, an innovative cognitive routing algorithm was presented to improve efficient and reliable route selection among multiple possible routes. Routing protocols based on conventional, Fuzzy logic used important parameters with two data collections and decisions techniques and a new adaptive Intelligent Hybrid Fuzzy-Neural routing protocol (IHFN) that included prior knowledge to the network of the underlying motion and energy parameters were all proposed and compared. Results with the new hybrid algorithm shown a significant improvement to solve the network end-to-end performance degradation problem. The new hybrid protocol improved network throughput with an average of 20% higher than traditional Ad Hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV) Routing protocol, improved the usage of network resources and reduced the maintenance process in adynamic topologies network.
Finally, based on datasets collected from a realistic motion RWM model in a virtual Ad Hoc cloud network, the performance behaviour of six selected deep learning algorithms to predict the next steps of positions, speed and residual battery energy values of these mobile nodes have been evaluated and compared. This work goes further by presenting two algorithm's training techniques to predict the next 300-time steps of position, speed, and energy. Results and dissuasion show the differences concerning prediction accuracy between using the single node dataset model or Multiple node's dataset model
Raamistik mobiilsete asjade veebile
Internet on oma arengus läbi aastate jõudnud järgmisse evolutsioonietappi - asjade internetti (ingl Internet of Things, lüh IoT).
Töö käigus loodud raamistikud on kontseptsiooni tõestamiseks katsetatud mitmetes juhtumiuuringutes päris seadmetega. The Internet has evolved, over the years, from just being the Internet to become the Internet of Things (IoT), the next step in its evolution. IoT is not a single technology and it enables about everything from computers, mobile phones, cars, appliances, animals, virtual sensors, etc. that connect and interact with each other over the Internet to function free from human interaction.
Mobile devices like the Smartphone and tablet PC have now become essential to everyday life and with extended capabilities have motivated research related to the mobile Internet of Things. Although, the recently developed Smartphones enjoy the high performance and high speed 3G/4G mobile Internet data transmission services, such high speed performances quickly drain the battery power of the mobile device.

Network reputation-based quality optimization of video delivery in heterogeneous wireless environments
The mass-market adoption of high-end mobile devices and increasing amount of video traffic has led the mobile operators to adopt various solutions to help them cope with the explosion of mobile broadband data traffic, while ensuring high Quality of Service (QoS) levels to their services. Deploying small-cell base stations within the existing macro-cellular networks and offloading traffic from the large macro-cells to the small cells is seen as a promising solution to increase capacity and improve network performance at low cost. Parallel use of diverse technologies is also employed. The result is a heterogeneous network environment (HetNets), part of the next generation network deployments.
In this context, this thesis makes a step forward towards the “Always Best Experience” paradigm, which considers mobile users seamlessly roaming in the HetNets environment. Supporting ubiquitous connectivity and enabling very good quality of rich mobile services anywhere and anytime is highly challenging, mostly due to the heterogeneity of the selection criteria, such as: application requirements (e.g., voice, video, data, etc.); different device types and with various capabilities (e.g., smartphones, netbooks, laptops, etc.); multiple overlapping networks using diverse technologies (e.g., Wireless Local Area Networks (IEEE 802.11), Cellular Networks Long Term Evolution (LTE), etc.) and different user preferences. In fact, the mobile users are facing a complex decision when they need to dynamically select the best value network to connect to in order to get the “Always Best Experience”.
This thesis presents three major contributions to solve the problem described above: 1) The Location-based Network Prediction mechanism in heterogeneous wireless networks (LNP) provides a shortlist of best available networks to the mobile user based on his location, history record and routing plan; 2) Reputation-oriented Access Network Selection mechanism (RANS) selects the best reputation network from the available networks for the mobile user based on the best trade-off between QoS, energy consumptions and monetary cost. The network reputation is defined based on previous user-network interaction, and consequent user experience with the network. 3) Network Reputation-based Quality Optimization of Video Delivery in heterogeneous networks (NRQOVD) makes use of a reputation mechanism to enhance the video content quality via multipath delivery or delivery adaptation
Power Consumption Analysis, Measurement, Management, and Issues:A State-of-the-Art Review of Smartphone Battery and Energy Usage
The advancement and popularity of smartphones have made it an essential and all-purpose device. But lack of advancement in battery technology has held back its optimum potential. Therefore, considering its scarcity, optimal use and efficient management of energy are crucial in a smartphone. For that, a fair understanding of a smartphone's energy consumption factors is necessary for both users and device manufacturers, along with other stakeholders in the smartphone ecosystem. It is important to assess how much of the device's energy is consumed by which components and under what circumstances. This paper provides a generalized, but detailed analysis of the power consumption causes (internal and external) of a smartphone and also offers suggestive measures to minimize the consumption for each factor. The main contribution of this paper is four comprehensive literature reviews on: 1) smartphone's power consumption assessment and estimation (including power consumption analysis and modelling); 2) power consumption management for smartphones (including energy-saving methods and techniques); 3) state-of-the-art of the research and commercial developments of smartphone batteries (including alternative power sources); and 4) mitigating the hazardous issues of smartphones' batteries (with a details explanation of the issues). The research works are further subcategorized based on different research and solution approaches. A good number of recent empirical research works are considered for this comprehensive review, and each of them is succinctly analysed and discussed
