Speech Recognition by Composition of Weighted Finite Automata
We present a general framework based on weighted finite automata and weighted
finite-state transducers for describing and implementing speech recognizers.
The framework allows us to represent uniformly the information sources and data
structures used in recognition, including context-dependent units,
pronunciation dictionaries, language models and lattices. Furthermore, general
but efficient algorithms can used for combining information sources in actual
recognizers and for optimizing their application. In particular, a single
composition algorithm is used both to combine in advance information sources
such as language models and dictionaries, and to combine acoustic observations

Realtime system control by means of path expressions
A high-level, algebraic programming method for the online control of actions in a real-time, parallel processing environment is described. The method is based on the interaction of path expressions. On the basis of a set of path expressions, evocation of actions can be controlled in real-time in a fully automated way. It is shown how intelligent system behavior can be obtained by a combination of rules given as path expressions. Each of these rules specifies some partial behavior to which the system must comply. The control system operates as a rule-based action planning system that works online in an asynchronous environment. From 12.12.2010 to 17.12.2010, the Dagstuhl Seminar 10501 "Advances and Applications of Automata on Words and Trees" was held in Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz Center for Informatics. During the seminar, several participants presented their current research, and ongoing work and open problems were discussed. Abstracts of the presentations given during the seminar as well as abstracts of seminar results and ideas are put together in this paper.
